LOCAL AFFAIRS, 1' !MORNING SIXTH ANNUAL EXHIBITION OF TEIE PRIBBYLVARLA AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY THIRD DAY-THURSDAY Fifty Thousand Visitors 11 There can be no doubt now as to the complete suocess of the sixth annual exposition of the Penn. sylvania Agricultural Society. The morning argued favorably, and as the day advanced the hopes of all were more than realised. The air was balmy as the month of May—the sky, although occasionally ob• ;he forenoon by passing clouds, cleared up, the afternoon old Sol shone resplendent. 7,711 . 1(1 and his wife" seemed to be in the streets. and it is no exaggeration to say fifty thous and people had visited the Fair grounds before night fall. The ladies were there in almost countless mul titudes, each with a face beaming with happiness, and by a singular coincidence a vast crowd of hand some and " from fair to middling" looking gentlemen were also present After a fuller examination, we repeat the belief expressed yesterday, that in all pertaining to agricul ture and the farm the present exhibition is successful beyond any ever given in this State. The display of horses, cattle, sheep and hogs is superb. We have visited a number of similar fairs in various places, but the display of horses at this exhibition certainly excels any previous one. The same may be said of all kinds of live stock. Among other noble specimens on the ground, we observed " Vermont Boy," from Mansfield, Allegheny county, who is perhaps the purest bred " Morgan" in the country, and is valued at three thousand dol lars. The fleet movements of •' Lady Scott," " Whalebone. - and a number of others excited con sideral admiration from the immense crowd of epee taton who thronged around the course. The ex amination or Committees proceeded in the following order: Matched Maros of all classes at 2P. M.; matched Horses of all classes at 3 P.M.; fast Hones in single harness and saddle at 4 P. M.; draught Horses at 43. P. M.; Mares under saddle and in ha rutas at 5 I'. M. CHICKEIIING of Boston, are acknowledged to be the great unmeant-curers of this grandest and root le,t LuUlleol inetrOuen Is. At the Fair yes tirday ilia imbile had au oppori:mity .4 . seeing the most elegant hi:Celine!, of their 11.hOutao.itre, which ware exhibited by J. 11. Mellor. Uso Grand Piano, numbered 17001, was the subject and general admiration. This 1154:um - ling number of these DOD puriel insttumenls bas already been sold, and the demand is constantly on the increase. J. If. Mellor had also on exhibition Masin A Rawlins celebrated Melodeons, made in Boston, and ranging in prices from $2OO to $OO. Call and see these elegant speci mens of art and taste at the "Domestic Goods Hall" on the Fair grounds, and go to J. H. Mellor's Piano and Musical depot, at No. M Wood street, Pittsburgh. EXQUISITE AND ELEGANT Few persona on the Fair grounds yesterday passed mound without being attracted by the groupes of admiring ladies and gentlemen who bad assembled, with insatiable curiosity to examine and praise a rase of ornamental needlework, consisting of finely wrought collars and handkerchiefs, by Miss Susan Sears. The most extravagant prices were offered for some of these articles by several of our most tiourishing retail merchants, and the fair hands and patient bright eyes that had so successfully excelled in these creations of the needle, never received more unmixed laudation or deserving compliment. This case is a triumph, whether it receives a premiutn or not. MrrcaeL, llHanoi( Co. have on exhibition alarge and fine collection of stoves, grates, fenders. to.. which bare attracted much attention. They also ex hibit their fame% Cooking Range, which, embracing as it dues all the advantages of a grate and stove is certainly incomprehensible. They have certificates from some two or three hundred gentlemen who have tested this Range its their dwellings, and bear testi mony to the many advantages it possesses over all other Ranges now in use. Visitors should by all means examine this hangs EV its superiorty to all others will convince the moo. in;redulous. The gen tlemen named are among LI e Idest, most substantial and reliable manufacturers in the city, and are well worthy of patronage. A great feature in Artists' Hall is the beautiful specimens of penman," exhibited by Mr. J. D. Williams, the Professor of Penmanship at Duff's College. These specimens have elicited the un bounded admiration of all. In looking at than it is hard to believe that they were executed with the pen, yet we are told that Mr. Williams has specimens even superior to the ones on exhibition. Miss L. J. Bennett and L. Ti. Morrism, two pupils of Mr. Wil liams exhibit specimens of penmanship really beauti ful, and which go to prove Mr. William's capacity as a teacher, and reflects great credit on Mr. Dad. the proprietor of Dull's well-known Commercial College. Among the most useful agricultural implements on exhibit is a Railroad Horse Power Threshing Ma chine, ii.ven!ed by A. Major .k Brother, and mane factored at Lebanon, Pa. These machines have been ; in use for years, and always given the most entire ' satisfa , tion. The two-horse powers are capal,le of threshing and separating from one hundred and seventy-live to two-hundred bushels ad wheat per day. They are a deoided improvement on the old ones, a1..1 every farmer should be in possession of one. Messrs. 11 , dates S Collins, Wood street, are the agents (or this part of the country, and all orders left with them will meet with prompt attention. •-t PuRTABLE 01 ENS. Mr. 1.. V. CAMERON has on exhibition in "Dairy Ilall," a number of the above very useful, and, -we think, indispensable articles. One of them was in operation during the day, and the specimens of 2 1 bread bolted by it attracted much attention. It is claimed that the oven, besides being '• portablo," onnsimcj tar lees fuel than any other now in mte. We think in a practical view, it must supercede all others: mid we would advise all to examine it, and judge for thomsolves, satisfied, as we are, that its merits will recommend it to every one. We noticed at length in Wednesday's edition the assorttio•nt of articles that the gentlemanly propro tort, of the Novelty Works had on exhibition, but in that notice we forgot to mention an admirable and ingenious iuveution called the "Constitutional Bal ance," , ;epigned to show the net value of a single rote to- Preridont and Vice President. It has at tracted consbbwoon attnntion. It would be needless to euuti,-to tic articles which this firm has on ex hibition, for they have a reputation which is almost world-wide. MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS. B. KLIMIIR ti BRO. offer a fine assortment of Pianos from the celebrated factory of Nunns A Clark, New York, comprising a splendidly carved full grand Pi ano in tlie Elizabethean style ; one full serpentine, and one semi-serpentine Piano, of superior quality end finl.b. Also, a double bank and a double reed Melodeon, from Cart:hart A Needham's New York factory, t ,gether with an Organ Harmonium with a number of stops and a rich and powerful tone. Dray, haugh exhibits his Heading and Shingle Cu t t er, w hi,-h has been pronounced by good judges to Ise jest the thing. It is well adapted for all the purposes intended. All orders for single or territory rights addressed to Drawbaugh t Eberly, Eberly's betillit, Cumberland county, Pa, will meet with prompt at tention. We will refer to this machine again. Mr. Andrew Hassell, of Hickory, Washington. county, hun on exhibition a fine three year old Dur ham Bolt. Mr. Russell obtained this Bull when a c,dl. it i, of the celebrated stock of John H. Ewing's, of Wabhington county, his grandsire was imported directly From Europe. This Bull will most probably take a premium. BUST OF WILSON IVCANDLESS. This Lust, exhibited by Matthew Lawton, reflects great praise on that geotleman, for it is certainly a masterpiece of art. Mr. Lawton ranks No. lin his profession. , f • t r: „e • , ` • • MX= OCTOBER 3 ESE= VINE STOCK ``s~ .. . MMI Mu. Jetts'Ns, the well.known and jatly-celebra ted principal of the Iron City Commercial College. exhibits several beautiful designs executed by the Professors in the above institution. Among others we were attracted by several beautiful specimens of penmanship by that prince of penmen, Mr. E. Cow ley. It was universally conceded that the speci mens of Mr. Cowley were as near perfection as it is possible to bring the art of penmanship, and rolled the highest credit upon his talents. Mr. Jenkins also exhibits a picture or diagram. called Mull oaek's Diagrammatic Illustration of the Double En try Ledger, which is designed to illustrate some of the laws of Double Entry Book-keeping, as they really exist, in a manner hitherto explained by no other author. This is an original conception, and has obtained much celebrity from having been suc cessfully taught in the Iron City College. and is said to be an improvement of high value. We thick the above institution, with its skillful principal and ar ray of talented professors, i . to say the least, an or- nament to our city, and T..° can otil . i t e sirous of acquiring a sound know :cage of book•keeping, and a chaste and beautiful aylo of penmanship, that they can find few better institutions than the Iron City Commercial College. The well known firm of Payne, Bissell Co., love a good display of their wares on exhibition, consit.t ing principally of atones, ft.nders, grates, dr. They have also among other things a very useful Ratige, heretofore alluded to, called the " Capitol Cooking Range." It was in full operation during the day: attracted the attention, and admiration of every visitor. Besides embracing all the advauttiev, stoves and grates, it 1,, far wore preferable than e.thc-, especially for family use. We heard several croons who have already given it a trial, speak very fa, bly of it. The other articles on exhibition by th.s firm attracted much attention, and many encomiums were passed upon the W111%)8. The proprietc, arc among our foremost manufacturers.
