THE
SIXTH ANNUAL EXHIBITION
PENNSYLVANIA
STATE AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY,
WILL HELD
AT PITTSBURGH
On SEPTEMBER 301 k, and on
OCTOBER Ist, 3d and 3d, 1856
RUST. C. WALKER, Secretary
Sharon Iron Works.—We are indebted to the res
ponsible agent of the Sharon Iron Company, Mer
cer county, Mr B. H. Henderson, for some facts rela
tive to that concern which promises much for the en
terprise of Western Pennsylvania. This mammoth
company has turned its attention to the manufacture
of steel from Lake Superior ore, which is found in
inexhaustible quantities in the region of the "Father
of Lakes," and transported to the "Sharon" by water
communication at trilling cost. The works for the
conversion of this admirable ore are of the most ex
tensive and costly character, being all that money
and human ingenuity could command, both in this
and other countries. The furnaces are an improve
ment upon the celebrated "Jessup furnace" Sheffield,
England, so lung and fairly the center of steel man
ufacturing ; the improvement being patented by Dr.
(1. Hand Smith, of Rochester, N. T., pronounced by
competent parties to be the very thing desired. The
works are superintended by Mr. W. M. Ptcicalay, of
Sheffield, who brings with him large and valuable
experience of the intricate and subtle process of the
manufacturing labratory. The architect of the
works and a man of valuable acquisitions is Xr.
John Byron. It has long been the belief of mon
engaged in the iron business that the Lake Superior
ore would revolutionize the iron trade, and, judging
from its purity and toughness, we should not be as
tonished that it would, all of which wilf of course
eventuate to the benefit of the consumer. We are
. now ahead of the world in copper, why should we
not lead in steal. The Sharon Iron Company have
now large investments in the vicinity of Lake Su
perior, near Mervartte, and are now shipping large
at oounts daily from that point. We shall look with
j utet :st to the future succe:.s of the Sharon In n
, temp .n,-. and ha' e no doubt the managers and capi
utiate will h adeern all the promises they have given

De.truciire (b nJlnyrntivu of P,rryerille.—A fire
broke out on Thursday night near Perrysville, about
seven miles from this city, and before the flames
oould be stayed the tavern kept by Mr. Hauptman,
pri.ate dwelling. and a etahle, with a largo quantity
of grain, bay, and a vallialle mare, were consumed
by the devonring element. The property destroyed
.was owned by Mr. John Keown, hut we did
certain what he sets clown his last at, or whether
there was any insurance. The fire produced one of
the -nost brilliant illuminations ever remembered by
