From the nutter Herald.] To mv Fitt.i.ow-Crrizszrs:—l n the history of American politics we have never hefore arrived at a more alarming crisis. Ambitions political leader, have brought the country to the verge of ruin. It behooves the good citizen, and it is his imperative duty to contemplate seriously the pre-ent unhappy and distrapted condition of the country, and to adopt, if possible, some wise and miutary measures that may bring peace to the country, and reconcile and harmonize the con flicting elements of discord. It cannot be expected that the mere appeal of the partisan wilt avail in the present excitement of the .public mind. For my own part, I have to say, that no interested motive of a selfish character prompted me to address my friends. I desire to say nothing of an offensive chore to either party, nor do I wish to be unders •171 as speaking in a partisan sense. It is well known that I have publicly expressed my disapprobation of the Aot of Congress re pealing the Missouri Compromise. This act tended greatly to a revival of the slavery agita tion, and the immediate consequence of civil war in Kansas followed, and have continued to rage with unabated violence and malignity even to the present time. That is was the clear Constitu tion•tl right of Congress to restrict the extension of slavery in the Territories, and to legislate on tie subject ao was done in 1820, and subso• quontly I never entertained a doubt since exam ! ining the subject, and that its inhibition in the nr,Ptern Territory greatly tends to promote the general welfare of the country. That great in justice and tyranny have been practised npon. lIEMEI . : ,Irr 4 • tettateirgn Post.. l The Danger of Disunion. Jft , sar4. Editor* s—With your leave I pursue this subject. It is admitted by our opponents that there is deep seated disunion sentiment. in the South : and no reasonable man will say that there is no crease for lit For this, as for every other effect, there must be a cause, and an adequate one under the eireumstan ens. It may be said, however, that there is no cerise that eeyht to have been allowed by the South to have .meh an elect, and this might be admitted without at all effecting the piestion s that there is danyer of ,/,'..eo;eu That depends upon facts of its own, and not upon the origin or cause of those facts. Besides this we are hut poor juibmit of the sufficiency of the , 0115C0 3 for we are surrounded with none of the con ditions that give them their power. We often fail to , yinnathise with the distress or anger, or delights of et: nearest friends, and even regard them as ridicu lous: and perhaps we rarely sympathise with them : yet they are none the leas real, and it is cruel in its to scorn them. It would be barbarous for us to laugh at the hied wailings ern mother for the death of even a worthless son. lire were surrounded by slave s that were half as numerous us ourselves, and thought we had a right to them, I suppose that we should be deeply excited, if we were continually abused and libelled in the publie prints by our fellow citizens of another sec tieu of the country as men stealers, negro-drivers, , Isveocracy and dealers in human flesh ; if we found that there were organized hands of religious ruffians is sister States, always endeavoring to steal away our property by underground railroads, and publicly mid atilt impunity boasting of their Success; if we r-und eur State and our institutions, our manners .cud stl,l'illis hold up to public scorn in Congress and -'tats legislatures. and on half the ltustings of the land - if we found all our friends elsewhere constantly set ,led .lough.faces, and willing tools of the slave Lee:Lose they have the cour age and te brays the torrent that is setting in against us: and id-perially if at last we ascertained that ono solid I.a:t of thee, whom we called our fellow citizens bad .rganized for the express purpose of defrauding a, , Urpots, irl rights, /,r it is ~tir no, biro of • must measure the wounding of our feel ;: )4 , when they are violated. My own estimation of valuo of my invaded rights give: keenness and I ees to the weapons that are used against tee. .iutts are always unbrotherly ; but it is barbarous t • use them even against our enemy, when he is afflicted O ith a leer. If we could bilm time to reflect and study long enough to pines ourselves is intaginatioo id the racial, moral end mate r i a l eircu ra n aiiees „c our Southern brethren, we might then pass a fair jdrignient on the sufficiency of arose of their aliens tion from us. If we cannot, our judgment must ne• cossarily be good for nothing. But whatever we may think of the cause, the feet remain: that there is in the South a deep seated alien , a tioe and this must be admitted to be a very serinte , element of disunion. And in family quarrels ne "no thinks of healing such diviaions by continuing and increasing their causes; but he is always the wisest peacemaker who is most ready and most gen erous in making concessions to slighted claims and eunded feelings. I:, the present case, however, wherein the happi. ness of millions and the glory and welfare of a no :ion are concerned, how madly are we acting! In steel uf allaying the dangerous excitement, we en, doevor to crush. Instead of confessing cad endear. ori ng to alleviate wrongs, many of which we could nid prevent, toe have combined with the ivreng-doer, and take advantoge of the hatred which they have eacitial. We base a party tie the suspicions anti alienations caused by abelitionists, and declare our munition to cam. out their purposes. Can such an intention enceeed without the most imminent danger of disunion? Is it not ruthlessly trampling upon those feolings of fraternal affection that are the - trongost band of union, and that can be cultivated Ind improved only by acts of fraternal kindness, mitt dead and received as such? WASHINGTON A 'T -A, • • • , - - • - ' the free State men of Kansas da-a feet that no candid and truthful man, who views the stirring events that have distracted that unhappy Terri tory, can or will deny. The acts too, of a body of men calling themselves the Territorial Legis lature of Kansas are unconstitutional, infamous and a disgrace to those who passed them. Bnt I appeal most earnestly to the American citizens to waive these questions for the presetit, and contemplate calmly, and with a heart unbias ed by party feelings on either side, the greater and more weighty question which presents itself at this time. , ioe.koon involving the perpetuity of the Union of the &wee, a Union cement° I by the blood of patriots, and by the preservation of which we may under the blessings of Heaven, continue a great, happy nation. On the other hand its dissolution would inevitably bring upon us as a people the most dire of all national calamities, civil war, and the whole country, it may be drenched in fraternal blood. Who can calmly contemplate the subject and not feel that one of the most solemn dutiea of his life is to be performed at the coming election. It is a crisis that calls upon the good and pa triotic citizen to rise above party, and to take a firm stand to avert the terrible calamity-that is pending over us. The good and patriotic citi zens of the whole country should considei the subject, not as partisans, but as ehristians and lovers of their country and make an earnest et fort to devise measures best calculated to allay the present excitement, which is intense through out the country, and such as has not existed at any former period. We have prominently before us two candidates for the Presidency, James Buchanan and John C. Fremont. It is a conceded fact that Mr. Fre mont will not receive an electoral vote in the slave holding States, and if he should be elected I believe that it would endanger the Union. Mr. Buchanan's position is;national, and his mea sures and policy would be conservative and just. My convictions on the subject are the result of calm deliberation, and I believe that the union of the States is in great danger. 104 the sub ject be properly considered nod the citizen act in accordance with his beat judgment.
