ABOLITIOSISM A DISEASE

r'-.1A414.
But the results of the abolition disease if un
checked arid unrestrained would prove infinitely
more fatal to all the best interests of humanity.
The great problem of man's capacity for self
government it was supposed had been solved,
and the truth established, that freedom, self-gov
ernment—popular sovereignty, was entirely com
patible with order, peace and national prosperi
ty, How the eyes of oppressed mankind were
turned towards ns in hope as this experiment
was progressing, and how tyrants and despots
trembled on their thrones as its success became
more and more apparent. No wonder the latter
sent this disease amongst ua. They look upon
the destruction of this 'Republic asjhoir only
salvation. In proof of this read the following
extract from the London Chronicle, the special
organ of the Queen of Great Britain :
" We sho.uld be sorry to see Mr. Buchanan
elected, because he is in favor of preserving the
obnoxious institutions as they exist, and the unity
of the States. rhere is no safety for European
monarch:rat governments if the progressive spirit
Qie nemor-rocy of the Crsitcd Stales ta adiopeed
to succeed. Eleer Fremont, arid du first blow to
the separation of the United States is effected."
And see also the language of another organ of
despotism.
The Paris Monitrur, official organ of the Im
perial Usurper, whom Fremont is said, by his
admirers, to resemble in some of the traits of
hie character, makes this announcement:
i‘OUR SYMPATHIES ARE ENTIRELY WITH
COL. FREMONT. WE 110 PE TO SEE No
EXTENSION OF THE DEMOCRATIC PRIN•
CIPLE IN THE UNITED STATES. IT 18
DANGEROUS. TO EUROPEAN GOVERN
MENTS."
The genuineness of these extracts no one will
deny, and they show clearly how closely thin
abolition disease is allied with their influences,
and ita sympathy with the European rulers that
would destroy our Democratic Republic. because
"It u clangcroue to Eurnpran goerrnmew/." Is
not this disease a dangerous one! And how
fatal would he its success.
For this fell disroase of abolitionism there is
but one remedy. It must be administered by
the people, and the ballot.. are the pills The
dis..w.e, is evidently approaching its crisis: and
Norrmher next mast terminate. It was neaer
so violent, or the insanity so dangerous before .
Let the dose be a trememluous one. Let the
purgation he utterly prostrating. In this alone
is the safety of the patient, and the safety of the
Republic. And it in the only ground of hope of
ultimately "crushing out" despotism over all
the earth.
As the mills were &omit and most of the ware
houses shut up, people of all parties had lama's g

r.itsburgh lawyers make abolition speech(:.
QTer they went in such numbers that we pro-

Meters. Editors :—Whon men change their
political sasocintiona, a docent respect fur
the optuions of others demands that they
siauuld declare the induvementil which have
prompted the change in their opinions; we
therefore beg a email space in your excellent
paper to declare our determination hereafter to
support the Democratic party and its nominees.
We have acted heretofore with the American
party, but actual experience has convinced u.
that the lenders have abandoned all the princi
ples once advocated and supported by that or
ganization, and are now waging an mirtrinctiphri
warfare against the Domeoratio patty, alike dis
honorable to them..eives end dangerous to the
country.
Thu leaders publicly ratified the nomination
of Fillmore, and his name fleets at the mist
head of the papers of that party no w published
in Uniontown, whilst the Clipper, pti Alish,d at
Brownsville, supports Fremont. Their speakers
publicly advocate Fremont, and privately ex
press their preference for Fillmore. In one part
of the county they advocate the principles of
the American party, and in another part they
are Fremont Abolitionists. We find the county
ticket is supported by these papers in Uniontown,
as a Fillmore ticket, and in Brownsville, as a
Fremont.
We cannot and will not support such impos.
ture. We esteem honesty as essential in pulities
as in the other affairs of life. We cannot be
made use of to aid men destitute of every princi
ple, in their schemes of imposture. We are
fully convinced by the course that the party
which styles itself by the name of Republican
pursues, that it has deep,'well laid and maturely
considered designs against onr. glorious Consti
tution an happy Union. We see the evidence
of their designs in the millions of dollars which
have been contributed in various sections, under
the guise of if.ansas aid funds, apd the mustering
of troops of armed men to invade Kansas, and
overwhelm the troops of the United Stares.
These acts of treason are like the muttering
thunder—the prelude to a dreadful storm in which
the ship of State Is threatened with destruction.
We are free, and our country is prosperous and
happy under Democratic rule, and desire it shall
remain so; we therefore have determined to sup.
port Buchanan and Breckinridge, In whose hands
our Constitution and Union are safe, and we call
upon all men who loye peace and hate disunion
and disorder, .o unite with ns in supporting our
country, its Constitution, and the Democratic
PartY.

The gales which are 1.61 i ciriNing our fleet to
ward the rock of disunion seem to rue so strong
and so direct, that it is hard to avoid thinking of t
those who are antionis to turn the fleet in the
direction of the gales, that they wilfully cry
peace when there is no pence, and that having
eyes they see not, and having ears they wilt not
hear. But the moss of our opponents do not ln-
tend to he unpatriotic ; and if their party pro
jects tend to disunion they do not/see it. One
of their most common answers to our fears of
approaching danger: " We are all as earnest for
union as you are. and the danger of disunion
and the cry for disunion comes only from the
South.
Lot us, however, not talk about professions,
hut only about facts, fo. these are the important
matter. When Marius shed the noblest blood in
Rome, and trampled on the liberties of his
country, it was to subject one class'bf citizeus to
another in the name of liberty and union. And
when Syne did the same it was to reverse the
order of Marius in the same sacred names And
when Cresar silenced and buried the last of the
forms that en bodied the spirit of Roman freedom.
and was declared by his admirers, emperor and
father of teal country, it was most profanely done
by a blasphemy upon the names of liberty and
union. No political scheme has any chance of
success that does not profess to be patriotic.
Who , are the facts that indicate an approach
ing dissolution' het me not be answered by a
reference to the faults of the Democracy: for I
confess that we are as human as other parties,
and the worse you make us out to he the greater
Is our country's danger. If you say there are
numerous ditinnionists in the south, you declare
a most important fact; and of it the Democracy
have a good right to complain ; for it weakens
the forces of the friends of the Union, who
naturally feeldiscouraged in contending for those
who re3ent their assistance.
But you admit awl proclaim the fade. And
what is your remedy ° You say they dare not
secede, and we will compel them to ruliniit. Is
not this itself a disunion peOrneitiori! Is it not
internal war proclaimed' Yon say no, for they
dare net resist. Still. is it not war, if one class
of the community is to use its physical force, or
the fear of it. in order to compel th e sob ta l es k a
of another"
Here let me call attention to the fact that we
ore, In a very extensive tense, many classes of
people having rigats and privileges differing
according to the laws of different States, or distin
guished as commercial an•t manufacturing States,
nr as maratime and inland, nr as Atlanti c and
Pacific, or as n slavelythling and non-wlnvehold
inc. Thee.• facts make essentially different
classes. The present contest has clas s ifi e d ns ns
•;aveholding an I non slarehohling ; some other
lay the cassificatioti rosy proceed en other
Now what I mean to say is that where each
classifications exist, they are facts that en ure
control legit.latioa . for it must be adapted to the
people whom it i. to affect. We violate nature
, f we disregard them These classifications in
iii .to the customs and hahits of the people,
which are roiled their lkfeol3l nature, and tr.
which all grime ;egittlation must conform. W e
