The immigrant arrivals from Europe at New
York, daring the week ending Thursday, foot up
2478, making a total from let of January to date
of 92.,050, against 96,985 same time last year.
A great fire occurred in Bloomington, 111., on
the Bth insL, which destroyed eight buildings,
valued at $50,000. There was considerable in
surance on the buildings and goods.
There was a Democratic mass meeting at
Parkeburg, Chester county, on Friday, which
was attended by upwards of twenty thousand.
The delegations from Lancaster county were very
large, and West Chester sent an immense crowd..
Nearly all the stations between Parksburg aod
Philadelphia sent large delegations, accompanied
with music and banners. The utmost enthu-i

The San Francisco Vigilance Committee, as we
learn by the last steamer, was about to disband.
Judge Terry, of the Supreme Court, had been
discharged from its custody, and the work of dis
mantling the Committee's fortifications commenc
ed. This accomplished, they resolved, on Mon
day, the 18th ult., to marshal all their forces,
and openly, before the world, to march to their
quarters and there consummate their work by
resigning into the hands of the people the power
delegated to them at the commencement of their
labors. They had a very imposing parade, the
number of men under arms being between 4000
and 5000.
From California we also learn that the Com
mittee charged with the collection of anbeorip
flops for the relief of the family of the late James
King of William, report the receipt of an aggre
gate of $81,669, which is to be invested for the
benefit of the family.
Philadelphia has long had the honor—ques
tionable or otherwise—of turning out more doc
tors of medicine than any other, or perhaps than
all the other cities of Union put together. This
will be best illustrated by the fact that one of
her colleges, since its foundation, sent 3597
graduates, and out of a medical class containing
610 students, there were from Pennsylvania, 139;
Virginia, 61; Georgia, 53 ; North Carolina, 40;
Alabama, 36 ; South Carolina, 22 ; Tennessee,
17 ; New Jersey, 15 ; Mississippi, 14; Illinois,

Massachusetts, 8 ; lowa, 2 ; Louisiana, 2 ; Bar
badoes, 2; Cuba, 2; and from Rhode Island,
Florida, Connecticut, Michigan, District of Co
lumbia, Canada West, West Indies and Corsice
each one. There are five or six medical colleges
altogether.
Ws were told yesterday that some of-the Dem
ocrats were going to leave town to avoid
the sight of the procession to-day. was a
Fremonter that told us, however. For unr part
we intend to stay in town and look the animal
right square in the face. It will afford us much
gratification to see how big a thing it is that we
are going to "flax like smoke" in November.
We are perfectly lure of doing it. We are sorry
to render such a desperate effort unavailing; but
it must and will be done. We'll bet ou't.
Ws call attention - to an article from the De.
troit Free Prese, in which *conversation with a
correspondent of the New York Tribune is de

of treason ever discovered in any country.

TOE BATTLE 01? OSAWATADIIE
The Biaisk Repablicao papers are once more
filled with startling accounts of " outrages " in
Kansas. The "Battle of Osawiltatnie" furnishes
the . New Turk Tribune with material for three
broad columns of blood and thunder intelligence.
The whole country can bear witness that, for
weeks prior to Lane's invasion of the Territory
peace had prevailed. So profound was this
peace that even the correspondent at Lawrence
of the New York TriOune was forced to confess
it. The outrages had run out, and the corres
pondent Was constrain i ed-io write of peace, or
write not at all. With the prevalence of peace
industry revived. The hum of activity anima
ted the towns, and settlers begun to occupy and
improve the lands. Kansas wore a joyous smile.
She prayed for repose, and Col. Sumner, by the
expulsion of Southern armed binds and the
dispersioraof the Topeka Legislature, had given
her repose: She asked only that she might en
the was permitted to enjoy it for a while.
girt repose to Kansas was death to the Black Re
publicanism in the States. The intelligence of
Fremont's nomination and of the "sack of Law
rence" spread over the country simultaieously,
and Fremont's prospects opened brilliant'y.
There seemed dale r that ho might sweep the
whole North with the force of a tornado, so ex
asperated Was the northern public mind by the
state ofjthings represented to exist in Kansas._
so_onnvnlsed was It by the false coloring given
V btnal events, and by the flood of manufno
tired '...Kansas outrages" with which the Black
Irepubliten;press deluged the !and. But the
brilliancy - Of, Fremont's' prospects were soon
dimmed. The danger thfitlie might sweep the
North noon panted. Col. Sumner disarmed the
hostile bands, escorted them out of the Territo
ry, Ind established peace. From that moment
Black Republicanism languished and Fremont's
prospects diminished, and it was clearly seen
that, if peace should continue, Fremont would
get next to no electoral votes at the election.
Then it was that Lane's invasion was planned
at Washington, and preparations for executing
it set in motion. A convention at Buffalo qnkk
ly ensued, at which it was resolved to raise one
hundred thousand dollars a month in " aid af
Kansas." Immense sums were subscribed by
abolition millionaires for the purchase of arms
and ammunition and to equip in all respects men
for the invasion. Missionaries were started out
on collecting eipeilitionc The N. Y. retain+,
opened a subscription Kansas fund" which al
ready hue reached some ten thousand dollar!.
Meanwhile, Lane was secretly engaged in collet
thug men, and directly intelligence came that he
wets on the lowa border with nu army a thouogind
strong, armed, equipped and drilled. No re
mained in lowa long entingt; to permit his thou
sand men to vote fraudulently at the State elec
tion, when be descended upon Kansas, waging
the country with fire and sword. lie attacked
settlernrata, robbed inhabitants, and burned
towns. He awoke, of course, a spirit of reals
teace The anti-abolition party of the Territory
arose as manse to protect themselves Was it
not natural that they /about,'

THE DIPPERENCE.—James Buchanan, Silas
Wright, Henry Clay, John C. Calhoun and Daniel
Webster used to serve their country in Congress
for eight dollars a day. Samuel A. Purviance,
John Allison, David Ritchie, John Covode,
Jonathan Knight charge thirty-five dollars a
day, and get it. They vote against giving the
soldiers nine dollars a month at the same time.
Pus Fremont party is losing ground fast in all
the southeastern portion of this State. It is the
third party there. In Centre county, and from
thence to Philadelphia, the contest is between
Buchanan and Fillmore. Such is the opinion of
candid men who have an opportunity to know.

have ail along helm satisfied that those laws el'
the Kansas Legislature that restrict freedom of

Sub appears to have been all along the genctal
opinion. 11141. e test oaths, too, are simply T
for unconstitutionality. The ljnitcd States Sen

them. Cleo. Cass denounced both of these divots
of those laws as ` disgrace to the age :" - and th

for the infamous refusal of the Black Itepubl:•

Carl. Gel** aeons to have resolved to trent
those laws in accordance with this opinion ; and
ho intimates it in hisftrrt speech. We quote
the foltctrillg from the Cc nuarrcictl:
"Governor Geary reached Leavenworth City on
Tuesday eventhg. Quite a number of the, citiret,

which wore expected. When they learned that ti,v.

with qualifications attached.„ he would enforce all the

Smith. lie stated his intention to proceed to Law

would cornea for a hotly guard.
The Mtssourl Republican of Saturday says
Tho steamer J. H. Lucas arrived yesterday from
the Missouri river. The news from E1111134$ is of
very little importance. A gentleman win) wi, at

Meanwhile, it is said that the men under the com
