both had an examination before . Mayor Bingham.
Smith is young in, years, altbongti perhaps not in

Errif ing the officers were taking to the
jail Richard Smith and Win. Griffiths, the two men
who are mettine.d in another place as having been
arrested for trying to dispose of a lot of silver forks
and spoons under susl icious cireutnstances, the
fernier made a desperate effort to escape. The party
were standing in the office of the jail while their
commitments were being registered, when Smith
made a dash for the open air. He shut the large
iron gate after him, and also the outside door, there
by materially retarding the pursuit of the officers,
one of whom woo further incommoded by coming in
contact with a d.,g, which brought him to the pave
ment, and the other fell over the officer already pros
trate. In the meantime. Smith was making his way
down the court house yard at 2,40 speed, when, for
tunately, ho met Jailor Phillips, who, suspecting
1 the fellow was giving leg bail to somebody, ordered
him to slop at the peril of being knocked down.
Finding from the look of Mr. Phillips Clint he would
probably put his threat in execution, the fellow
quietly submitted to be led back, without.a single
shriek for freedom, but sunitry imprecations on the
lush that led him to meet the man whom of all
others he would Lave most avoided.
A Mot,' 11,.1,,nd.—Michael Flannigan, living on
Liberty street, near Wesley chapel, attacked his
wife with a large butcher knife, and gave her a pain
ful wound in the face. for which she charged him
before Ald. Wilson with assault and battery and in
tent to kill. When officers Johnson and Maxwell
went to arrest him he swore terribly, and threatened
to take the life of any one who dared to enter his
house. The door was bolted, but a daughter, who
Lad fastened herself in a room to avoid receiving
similar treatment to that of her mother, when she
heard the voices of the officers, lot them in. There
upon Flannigan, who was up stairs, rushed down
with a pair of Iron tongs and struck Johnson a tre
mendous blow upon the back. In the scuffle the
light went out,.as did also officer Maxwell, who be
took himself from a scene of so much danger. The
struggle was then 'between Johnson and Flannigan,
~which ended in his arrest, after some assistance had
been rendered by outsiders, not, however, until Le
had diz.,bled the officer's loft arm by a blow of the
tongs. Flannigan was sent to Jail.
Theatre—Benefit of Mrs. Farren.—Mrs. Farron,
f i a nal% ersally a favorite, has been playing a very
litnlted englgeruent of Ste nights to very excellent
lioucs, considering the strong political bias at present
existing. To-night we have an opportunity of seeing
her fur the lat, tittle in a most varied and attractive
entertaioment , txt the Wrecker's Daughter, who
can ever forget her beautiful personation of Marian.
A poetical address to all politicians, with the comedy
of l'eg Woffington. The latter is a beautiful comedy,
requiring more than common requisites, and cannot

& l oll: and Disorderly.—The number sent to the

four; didcrinen -,,Eonaldson one, and Alderman
Themp-on one. shay were committed for from
twenty-I-tor hours to thirty days. Ono individual
who was particularly oblivious had on his person six
hundred and thirty-eight dollars in gold, which
would have probably soon melted away had not the
-Justice kindly

five days until he is better able to take care of him
self and his pile.
aloes nrerksfierned.—Tho‘extensive green glees
mannufectory situated in the Ninth ward, was almost
entirely destroyed by fire on Thursday morning.
The fire broke out about half-past three o'clock, and
spreading with great rapidity, the whole building
•ivas soon in flames. The firemen reached the ground
with all possible haste, and in half an hour after the
engine. commenced working the flames were extin
guished. The works were owned by Messrs. Cur.
