DEMOCRITIC ~ MEETIAGN AT EAST LIBERTY, This Evening, (Pridayo at Johnston's, Messrs. ATCHISON, WINOARD and JONES will atidre,e the meeting. It suits the purposes of our opponents to rep resent to their miserably deluded followers that slavery is aggressive in its tendencies. The facts of history conclusively contradict this assertion. Let us briefly refer to those facts. When our Independence was declared, twelve of the thirteen original States were slave States. Since then slavery has been abolished by the popular will in six of those States. That is what .• popular sovereignty" has done for slavery in six of the "old thirteen." Up to 1784 all that "mart-, west territory" on which are now the five States of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wiscon sin, belonged to Virginia. It was as mud) a part of Virginia as Greene county is a part ,f this State. It wee under Virginia Laws, the sla very laws included ; and was therefore slave territory. Virginia, instead of urging slavery upon it, made a voluntary gift of it to the Fede ral government, and it is now the seat of tie great free States. Here, then, we find that free dom has encroached upon slavery, and we find now eleven free States of the North where sla very and slave laws formerly existed. Is that what the rogues mean when they talk about .• slavery aggression I" Until 1803 all the ter ritory, west of the Mississippi river, extending from the Gulf of Mexico to the northern lak,A and to the Pacific Ocean, belonged to France, and was all slave territory. Wherever a settle ment. existed, slavery was there, and the law of slavery extended over the whole of it. In 1803 it was purchased by our government. And what is the result, so far as slavery is concerned Louisiana, Arkansas and Missouri have contin ued slavery. All the rest of that vast region will become free States. lowa has 'become r o already. No one doubts that such will be the case in Minnesota. The territory of Nebraska is six times as large as Pennsylvania, and DO one speaks of it es becoming any other thaii free States. Oregon and Washington territories will be free 13tatee. No sensible man now doubt , that Kansas will be a free State, if the abolition rascals there are compelled to keep the peace. Here then is a territory thdt was slave when we acquired it, but out of which will be formed a dozen or more free States. Is this slavery ag greasion? In it not slavery losing ground all the time But what of Texas? say the negro-worship pers. Simply this: Texas was an independent nation, and had slavery. She offered voluntary annexation, and came into the Union as a state. The annexation neither established nor abolished elaaery in Texas. We acquired California, Vtah and New Mexico. Tbey had no slavery and wilt have uoue. From these well known facts is it not apparent that the North, or the free State end of the Union Is constantly gaining .on the South I—gaining in political power, in population, in territory, in the number of Stater, in everything that can give the lie to the con stantly repeated assertion about "slavery op , gression 1" Observe, too, the fact that not one foot of free territory teal ever acquired, and then converted into "Uwe territory. On the other hand vast realms of 'lave territory have been acquired and converted into fret territory and States. At the coramerteatnent of our independence a.ll the nation (except one *State) was slave terri tory. Now two thirds of the whole nation is free from slavery. And this is called " slavery aggression." Virginia voluntarily gave five great States to freedom; and the' freeboters call it slavery aggression," The South helped to purchase vast domains that are being peopled almost entirely ftiim the North, and the, woolly heads call it "slavery aggression." The North teas a majority of two in the Senate, and fifty • three in the House of Repreaentatives inCon grees, and the negro worshippers call it "sla very aggreasioti." Just about two-thirds of all the offices of the general government are now tilled by northern men ; and the negro party call it " slavery aggreseih." Is it not perfectly apparent thp,t this cry of slavery aggression is a humbug and a falsehood ? It may mislead simpletons ; but men making any pretensions to intelligence must know that it is an inexcusable falsehood. hiorranuEn, September 4 .—Returns from one hundred towns show a majority of over 12,060 for Ryland Fletcher, Republican candidate for Gover nor. JOHNNY IN DANGER.-An article in this day's paper, which we take from the New York Ex press, furnishes pretty strong proof that Johnny Charley Fremont (Pryor Y) was not born within the limits of the United States, and therefore can never he President or Vice President. By that report there arc claims oil the Treasury, now on file, for the subsistence of (el. Fremont's regiment, composed of about three hundred men, during six months service in Cali_ fornia, amounting to over $BOO,OOO. According to these claims, each one of his men cost $2O a day during that six months. The beef account alone shows that each man consumed every day jourfrra pounds of that article. These claim were MO enormous on their fire that only about onc.sivh, or $166,000 have been allowed. A board of army officers examined and reported upon them, and determined that the residue, or nearly $BOO,OOO was so fraudulent or so sus picious as to require explanation. And this is only one of the numerous similar frlusactions that gu to show the skill of the immaculate John Charles Fremont as a " path finder " into the National Treasury.— UM. Mae u ermums Daeititi.—The Episcopal Church of St. l'aul, in New Haven, Bann., has in one of its towers, two stems cut into forms of tl•.e ace of clubs and ace of diamonds—devices taken from a pack of cards. The explanation given is this: the arcbtteet Arst employed in the erection of the building was a Deist, and a man of Litter cyni cal spirit. By way of burlesque, he resolved to cut the stones for the structure into such figures that a huge pack of cards might appear flaming. out on the sides of the sacred structure. By means of scaffolding and other concealment., lie veiled his design from the building committee till the. walls wore nearly carried up, and his practi cal joke nearly played off. The discovery was at last made, and the whole structure, of etmrse, taken down. In the course of demolition, the ai6Litect fell from a scaffolding and was instantly killed. A most luxuriant woodbine mantles the present walls and nearly hide. the two stones above referred to, which being near the foundti tio'n of the Two j p tower, were suffered to re main. SALEM. Columbiana Co., .ohio, September 4, Igts6, "Ma. Etyma :—You are aware thatyesterday signalized the opening of the third annual Ohio and Pennsylvania Horse Show, at this place. List year it was not held till the middle of Octo ber, when the season had become so cold as to render it very unpleasant to the out . -door student in pursuit of equininc knowledge. But notwith standing the drawback of "o.ttipping and an eager air," the entries of stallions, geldings, roadsters, fillies and horseflesh generally were seere.oly ns numerous this year as last, and the attendance hut very little better, if so good. In fact, all told, there were about forty quadrupeds on the ground as competitors for the numerous prizes offered—a ratd erly beggarly account you must agree for two great States. Where the fault lies—whether in the wttut of sufficient no tice being given, the absence of public spirit among the growers, or the small crop from which to select, I will not pretend to determine. is enough for my purpose to state that forty foot -footed animals—very few, too, of unusual wotth—did nut appear to be considered much of slow by those who had come from fifty to one hundred miles to see the sight, and they were therefore perfectly satisfied with one whole day at Salem, Columbiana county, Ohio.
