Great Excitement In Lawrenceville
Great consternation was caused in Lawreneeville,
yesterday, by the announcement that orders had
been received at the Allegheny Arsenal for the dis
charge of all the mechanics, artisans and laborers
employed there. The order was immediately com
plied with and 120 persons were suddenly thrown
out of employ without any previous warning. This
action has been rendered necessary in consequence
of the unprecedented and factious course of the
House of Representatives at Washington, in refusing
to pass the military appropriation unless accompa
nied by an irrelavent and unconstitutional proviso
which usurps the Executive power and nullifies
the Judiciary. Thus do the Bluok Republi
cans in Congress show their love for the work
ing man. So intense is their admiration of the ne
gro race that they have no sympathies left for the
poor white man who "earns his bread by the sweat
of his face." The amount disbursed monthly fur
labor alone at the Allegheny arsenal is over $4OOO--
the yearly disbursements, for labor, materials, Ac.,
amount to about $BO,OOO. All this, is bard money,
is scattered in this community among our laborers
and dealers. But through the blind fanaticism and
obstinocy of Black Republicanism, we are to be de
prived of this hereafter. Truly, " whom the Gods
would destroy they first make toad."
P,'lt e rb irrg h I )rato vs.--- The speeches of
• Cols. McCandless and Black, at the Waynesburg
meeting, created a great sensation there. The speech
of COl. McCandless occupied more than an hour in
the delivery and was exceedingly well received.
After passing over the salient points at issue between
the parties, he made some very happy allusions to
the fame of Washington, Fayette, Greene and Wayne,
whose names had been given to the counties of the
district and the pleasant villages of the inhabitants.
Col. Black, although not unknown to the citizens of
Greene, took them Completely by surprise by his su
perior effort on this occasion. Hitherto his ardent
appeals to the Democracy of Greene, were sprinkled
with mirth•moving sallies and anecdotes ; but en
Thursday his aim was to show, by stubborn facts and
irresistible conclusions that the integrity tiflmr
Union is seriously menaced by the wiles of an
insidious faction ; and by way of glaring contrast to
exhibit the impregnable position of the Democracy
in defence of the Constitution and the rights of every
portion of the confederacy. His speech was declared,
by all who heard it, a meet masterly effort.
.4 Chance to make Money. --The Chenn,',-le dies 0.1
care a o.ln whether Fremont be a Catholic or it
Protestant, but as the subject has excited some de
gree of interest in the public mind, it states on the
, -authority of the Charleston IS. C.) Courier that tea•
simony can be procured to prove that the Colonel
has been a Catholic, and the fact is well known to I
many persons there. tin the other hand, the (•hire
go proposes to pay $l,OOO to any one who
will prove Fremont a Catholic. Here is a tempting I
offer to some of the saran, to make money and pur•
sue an interesting but laborious study. The Co!.,
eel's religion us well as his polities are involved in
the greatest obscurity, as well as hie birth and per
sonal antecedents. He may la regarded a iote-•
aro., and we would not be surprised if the learn
ed s c .ttaite now in Gster.entkon nt Albany, should
ieetn I,;_m a fit subject fur a scientific lecture, iu
non with the gars, turtles and other "odd tish."

our of the p.•iaoners, named Henry Huta

er committed on a charge of larceny, and the two
tter for assault and battery, were the persons oho
ode the attempt. They had been some days at
ork, had removed the iron caning of the window of
eir cells, and hard opened an aperture sufficiently
rgo to admit a limo's head, when jailor Phillips,
ho had an intimation of their designs, stopped their
urk by removing the culprits to another cell and
a,ged them on a low diet rd bread and water for
err pains.
Pugilistic Encualare.--- We understand that a voy
-etty tight occurred no Wednesday evening in the
inth ward between a Fremonter and a Fillmore
lan. Fillmore was engaged in a very interesting
iseuesion on politics with a friend, when woolly
cad came up and put in a vary forcible argument
v striking Fillmore in the face. This mode of de
trmlitig freedom of speech was not exactly to the
isle of Fillmore, who subsequently caught Fremont
nd administered an appropriate retort, deeming
H reuriont's Black Republicanism imperfect without
, e addition of a bleat eye. No appeal has yet been
ade to a - higher law," but it is supposed that he
if the black eye will be "about" soon.
Door'? EchiCalion.—A meeting of the Central

ttempts to defraud ahem Ile passed some coon

Nos Arrical.—Mr. Robert Watson, corner of Lib
erty and Wayne streets, has received from the Dar
lington Cannel Coal Oil Company, ten barrels of oil,
being the first manufactured by the company just
named, at their establishment lately erected at the
junction of the Darlington branch railroad with the
Ohio and Pennsylvania Railroad. The utility of
this oil as a burning fluid, as well as for all ordinary
mechanical purposes, has been sufficiently tested, and
we will shortly lay before our readers a certificate of
a number of scientific and practical mon, as to its
real merits and economy in its use as compared with
other oils heretofore used, the result of -which will
astonish every person unacquainted with the oil in
question. For the present we content ourselves with
the simple announcement that whatever shall prove
its legitimate merits, is due to Mr. C. Cherry, the
originator of the process of manufacturing, and to
our townsman. Robert Watson, as the business wan
of the enterprise.

Feemie 'feudLei,' Appointed.--Thu Control Board
of Education last evening appointed Miss Lizzie M.
Hazlett Principal of the No. 2 school for girls in the
Third ward ; Misses Ellen Mason and Ellen tiregg
were appointed to teach in the primary schools in the
seine ward. From what we saw of the qualifications
of the fair appointees, we judge they were appoint
ments eminently " fit to be made." There were sev
enteen applicants far the three vacant positions by
young ladies, many of whom were beautiful, and
nearly all gifted with mental accomplishments : and
hence it was a matter of regret among ti:o members
of the Board that they had to be invidious iu their
selections, where all wore so deserving.
Democratic Pole raisin.--There is to he a great
meeting at Bailey it MeLnue's Coal WOrks, iu South
Pittsburgh, one square above the Monongahela
Bridge, this evening, at five o'clock, to participate in
the raising of a Democratic pole. The Allegheny
Glee Club will sing some of their choicest songe : sev.
oral prominent speakers will deliver speeches, and it
is expected that all the world and his mother " will
be there.

all females are no subject to it that they should always
a bottle of Cathelicon on hand. They may rely upon it
that it will work wonders.. I know from certain expe
rience. The symptoms. when connected a ith the face, are
too well known to need description. When the sternach is
afloutati there art, contractions and "shooting pains, some
limos extending to the cheek and hai.k, and frequently ac
compan.ed with nateseau, fniu•nees, coldness of,the ex
tremities and acidity. These symptoms will seem be com
pletely controlled by the Catholicon.
