INCREASE AND SROCESS
We are glad to he able toitay that there still
continues a steady increase or. our subscription
lists.- It certainty 'indicates a good condition of
things in itik.pitrty.: The DeMoorats seek infer
rufk, doll, and when - they get it they And that
stories of the black republicans are sheer fabri•
cations. We publish every week seine of the
most reliable and able documents we can find,
and they are evidently doing serious mischief to
the Premout ranks. Such letters as those of
Choate, Pratt, Pearce, Granger, Van Buren, and
the speeches of Clay, and Jones, and many others
are convincing all who are wining to believe the
truth, that a sectional party is dangerous. We
shall continue to publish such documents, and
hope our friends will continue their efforts to
scatter them broadcast over this end of the State
by getting up more large clubs. Now is the
time to do It in every neighborhood. The suc
cess of our party insures it success f“r several
years to come ; and it insures the safety of the
Union and the Constitution. Never had-Demo
crats more cause for exertion ; and can they do
anything more useful than to scatter reliable iu
formatiou Our cause is just and right—never
more emphatically so than now. Let the truth
be made known. It comes cheap in a very large
sheet like our Weekly paper.

William A. Stoke• of Westmoreland on
The Journal of yesterday, in closing a notice
of the recent very able speech delivered by W.
A. STOKES in this city, puts divers questions to
which we hope that gentleman will reply in his
own clear and vigorous manner. Meantime we
take leave to say: Ist, that the Democratic Party
is NOT "in favor of excluding Pennsylvania white
men from Kansas by tilling the territory with
slaveholders and slaves," but 2d,-agreeing to the
principle announced in the Declaration of Inde
pendence, of the political equality of all men,
we would extend this to Kunsas, and let the peo
ple there, as elsewhere, for i nt their democratic in
stitutions according to the wish of the majetily.
3d: we do NOT "think the North should he silt,
dued"—or that Mr. Douglas ever said so—but
neither should the South be subjected. Thus
these three questions are "plainly" answered off
hand, and for want of the more elaborate replies
which we trust will be made by the eminent citi
zen to whom they are personally addressed.
JUST So.—The Journal man, speaking of
some new bill, which it alleges goes fur the
" rurperotion" of certain laws in Kansas, says :
" Why not say repealed r If those laws are valid
nod binding, they Ahuuld be enforced. If not, they
should be annulled at once. This bill propose,. ti.
suepold them—thus admitting their invalidity and
vet preserving their vitality."
Just so, Mr. Journal. The attempt of the
local authorities in Kansas to - enforce" those
laws has been a prolific theme of denunciation
with the freedom shriokers: and the insincerity
and bad faith of the Black Republicans in the
House in refusing to vote for the Senate's Pacifi
cation Bill, which annulled them, been abun
dantly manifested. Mr. Weller has, however,
given them another opportunity to show their
consistency, by again bringing forward the sec
tion referred to. Will the Journal recommend its
acceptance by the House as a compromise" The
Black Republicans at the present moment yet--
taiuly occupy an anomalous position, and the at
tempt cif - that party in the House to prevent the
execution of those law., by nullifying the Exec
utive and Judicial branches of government.

Now, it I i is a well known 'fact, that I have the

ire, which has cost me years of labor and anxiety."
Sumsca ON PENNSYLVANIA.—There has been
some excitement produced in Blair, Cambria end
other central counties of this State, by a remark
of Charles Sumner, that Penrisylvanian.t a,-re
011ie .r!ares. Mr. Sumner alleges that his re
mark was that John Randolph said so. But it
seems that be quoted the remark approvingly.
The gentlemen to whom he said it had called on
him with very friendly feelings. But, some of
them at least, left very touch exasperated. Their
patriotism and self-respect, as children of the
Keystone State, were outraged at such an un
called fur and insulting reproach.
Tuk Cincinnati Enquirer office was set on fire
in four different places, by some miscreant, about
oue o'clock on Monday morning last. Some gen
tleman who happened to be passing, discovered
the editorial rooms in a blaze, but succeeded in
extinguishing the flames without creating any
alarm.
ALL toe Love. "--A young German saddler
df St. Louis, named Eggers, a member of the
Turner's Society, committed suicide last Sunday
by blowing out his brains with a pistol. He
had been engaged to a young lady and the mar
riage was to have taken place the succeeding
Sunday, but his mistress changed her mind, and
on the receipt of an intimation to that effect
went quietly up stairs and committed the fatal
deed. Eggers was well known and universally
esteemed by his acquaintances.
THE Boston Traveler says of the letter of Hon.
Rufus Choate, in which he comes out for Buchan
an : It is by long odds the heaviest shot that
has yet been fired in the campaign, and it goes
booming and crashing through the timbers of the
Republican ship in a way which will startle her
numerous and gallant crew and require the sum
moning of all hands to repair damages."
CACOHT A TARTAR. —The Fremont and Day
ton journals have frequently announced that
"Hon. John Brough, formerly a leading Demo
crat of Ohio," had come out for their candidates.
The following, from the Indianapolis Sentinel,
shows how he " supports" their ticket:
At the abolition know nothing meeting on Satur•
day evening, John }hough was several times vocifer.
ously called for. So persistant was the " crowd" in
their demands for a speech from }rough that he
could not well avoid making an explanation, which
he did, much to the chagrin of those who thought
they "had him fixed."
Mr. B. said that if he made a speech be was afraid
it would be a democratic speech, for he never made
any other in his life. Voices in the crowd cried out,
" Let it be a democratic speech, but not a locofoco
speech."
" Gentlemen," said Mr. Brough, " I am afraid it
would be a locofoco speech, for I feel that I am yet
BO much of a locofoco that if I was to scrape my heel
against the pavement it would ignite."
" Well, well ; lot it be a locofoco speech, but a free
speech and Fremont."
"Gentlemen," continued the good natured and hu
morous speaker, "if I was to speak now I think I
think I should have to speak in favor of my good
brother, Buchanan."
Whew ! don't speak then !" The abolition por
tion of the crowd was no longer anxious to hear Mr
Brough.
THE Pittsburgh Gazette says that the basest
political tricks of the present day is the abandon
ment of Fillmore by the Southern Know . Noth
- Exchange.
It is more than equalled in baseness by the Re
publicans of the North in their abandonment of
the Constitution and the Union for the elevation
of the African negro to an equality with the

fFram the Detro;t Free Yi
Appeal of W bilge of Det reit to the Whigs
Of
The undersignetre. being heirs, with you, of a
prieelL-s politicalinheritance.; fellow citizens, of
a common country; mentbers•of a great, co4cr
va tv e, national, and once triningiont partyi - •
sire to address to yon foe weeds of warning
and of eshoitation, in view of the causes which
endanger the perpetuity of the government, dis
turb the repose of the country, and threaten to
eradicate from the national mind that sentiment
of unity which has hitherto made us one people.
Though disbanded by the death of our parlia
meuta•y leaders, reduced in number by defection
in our ranks, disheartened by the political infi
delity of some of onr chosen instrumentalittei,
we believe there still slumbers in the bosom of
our party a sentiment which will cordially
respond to every note of appeal coming in the
name of that revolutionary watchword which did
so much to sustain our fathers during the log
struggle which intervened between the battle of
Bunk.-r Hill and the termination of the siege of
Yorktown, in the surrender of Lord Cornwallis.
it i: to the scattered but living rnemben of
that national and gallant band who wept for
their country at the defeat of Heury Clay in
1844, that we make this brief address.
Being ourselves among the number of those
who joined the whig standoetl, no less from an
ardent adoration of two men, one distinguished
above all others for his power of marshalling the
hosts which entered the ranks of his friends, and
the other for massiveness of intellect which gave
a breadth and solidity to the party commensu
rate with the constitution of our country, than
from a sincere conviction that their views of the
offices of a revenue tariff, of a national curren
cy, and of the principles which should govern
the administration of public affairs, as well no
the legislation of Congress, if carried into effect,
would have promoted the prosperity or tbe citi
zens; and increased the stability of the govern
ment.
These convictions enable us to retrace our
party history with a just sentiment of pride,
embittered only by the regret, that we failed to
enetamp our principles upon the government and
the country, and to requite, with a becoming
manifestation of gratitude, those eminent mon
who inspired it with those great attributes which
challenged the admiration, secured the support
and confidence of much of the talent and intelli
gence of the country.
Whilst we still approve of the measures advo.
cated by the champions of the good old whig
cause, reaffirmed in the nets of our national eon.
ventions: whilst we revere the memory of those
who have departed in the faith, leaving us the
fragrance of their good names, and the influence
of n great example: and whilst we admire and
would humbly imitate the example of our gt ett
men, both in the past history of the party and in
the recent nets of some of its distinguished
members, we would fain have you remember
that there is only left for us the duty of chon.,
ing between an effort to reorganize and recon
struct the whig party, or to abandon our duty as
citizens in refusing to vote at the coming else
tion, or to merge ourselves, in violation of all
our antecedents, int., a party sectional in its ac•
ganizatiou and dangerous in its tendeneio , . or
that of boldly taking sides in the present cam
paign with our ancient but national opponent,
the democratic party.
As Whigs—as men, having the warnings of
Washington in our mernories-•--11.4 citizens know
ing our own history, so as to distinguish between
the powerlessness of a purilation, as seen durtng
the continuance of the confederation, as the
might and majesty 6f a p-ople, as organized un•
der our glorious Cout uti on as intelligent and
patriotic freemen, kuowitig the impossibility of
reconstructing such another political fabric, if
we permit this one to be ruthlessly destroyed, we
warn you against an alliance with any party of
men, Republicans, or otherwise in name, who
seem ready to do acts that will inevitably Ioo+,•u
the bonds that now hold us together as a nati,,o,
and oonstitute us one people.
Whatever our I.Vhig friends in other States of
the Union may, in the circumstances by which
they are surrounded, conclude to do, for oar
selves, in the absence of au unalloyed Whig or
ganization, after a careful survey of the moo.
which mark the political horizon of the coui.tr
—in view of the temperament of our peol•'c.
when excited to exasperation by the design+ t'
the demagogue, and of• the danger that acts tit t y
be done by them under the influence of a It ,o
porary aberration of judgment, however
otic the motives of the actors, which will can , .,•
the stars of our cherished confederation to eo
down in an endless political night, and the tl to
of our L 13101110 lie stauted ill fraternal 1.1.“1
we d eem it to be a paramount duty to leave na•
tried no honorable 111( . 1111,
to the defeat of the Republican ticket and thet
by preserve to ourselves an independent ear l
mice, ready for future action and entitled to a
glorious triumph, when our now excited Mid de
laded friends shall resume their wonted delibei
tition and renew their allegiance to that cower
vative party which tuts hitherto boiled upoil
United States as one country, and has engray. 1
in illuminated letters upon itsown chosen stun i
and thin pail iotic motto: Liberty and UM
now and forever, one and inNeparalds:"
therefore have resolved—
That we will preset our political identity I.y
joining no party that does not carry the tip
and keep step to the music of the Union ;" that
in our judgment it is Loo Into to attempt to re
organize the whig party for the purpose of seed
rine a commanding position in the election of
Krill.
And finally, on a review of our relations to the
democratic party, we find that our differ - en:,
with it have become narrowed down to an h-0
orable rivalry f o r obtaining possession of the
power of the government, each claiming the .1,-
position and the capacity to use it in node
certainly than the other to become instrument a l
in consolidating the government and promittinz
the happiness and prosperity of the people. For
these reasons we proclaim our intention to retain
our position as whip; but, fur the sake of the
government and the country, whose duration and
peace we desire to promote, iu the absence of is
distinctive whig organization in this State at the
approaching election, we will, as an alternativ,•
necessity, so Cast our Butt rage , . KS to promote
the electiou of Mr. Buchanan to the President-v
of the United States, iu which patriotic effort we
earnestly invoke your cordial cn•operation.

CHANGED COLORS.—The Merrer County I? quit
/lean, edited by J. M. D. Nesbit, Esti., has ta
ken down the names of Fremont and Dayton,
and run up those of Fillmore and Donelsen. It
claims that the American vote of that county
will be cast for Fillmore.
In this county we learn that the friends of the
ex-president are determined to rally, and con
template placing in nomination a pure unmixed
county ticket, to be supported by the Americans
at the coming election.—Butler Herald.

White Man Killed by a Negro
-,,0n Wednesday last a most unfortunate and
ItiMentoble occurrence took place At Noblesville,
itillamilton County, Indiana. The eireutnstan-
cOS as Slated to tis by men of character and ver- I
O;City, are -these: Three or four white men I
were at a small grocery at Noblesville, near the
east road bridge, and were inside, in peaceable
conversation among themselves. A negro, with
a swaggering air, probably intoxicated, came in
to the room and made use of loud words, saying
that he was a Fremont man and wanted to kilt
at least twenty Buchanan men. One of the white
men told the negro to leave the room, but he re
fused. The whit@ than; Users took hold of bite
the negro resisting. The white man soon puf
him out, but the negro was fur fight, and the
white man gave LIM a pretty severe thrashing.
After this was over and the white man had gone,
into the house again, the negro came hack again
and swore he would kill them, and that he in
tended to kill twenty white men before he stop
ped. lie stuck his bend into an open window
near the door and saw where the men were
standing, and then came to the door, stuck hi
arm in with a pistol in his hand, and shot Mr.
William Edwards in the breast, the shot causic'
z hia deutla in ten minutes. The negro was un
mediatiely seised, tried and committed to jail.
Mr. Edwards was a peaceable, worthy citizen,
and instead of being a Democrat, he was a sup
porter of Fremont. Much excitement exists in
the vicinity, and there is a general condemnation
of the idea of allowing negroes to become par
ties to political questions. These are the fruits
of Abolition efforts to bring the races of black
and white to a scale of equality. Mr. Edwards
was not the man who fought the negro.
PRACTICAL ANALGAMATION.—MURDEROUs
SAULT AT lIAILLEM,—The New York Times col,
tains the following news item :—Between 11 and
10 o'clock, on Sunday night, a negro named
Daniel Williams entered the porter house of a
man named Meyers, corner of One Hundred and
Seventeenth street and Fourth avenue, and, while
drinking at the bar, invited a white man named
John Gorman, who was sitting in the place, and
with whom he was acquainted, to drink with
him. Gorman took the invitation of the negro
as an insult, and made remarks which threw the
negro into a passion. The latter left the place
in a rage, but soon returned with a piece of a
scythe, two feet in length, in his hand; and,
finding Gorman in front of the porter house,
aimed it blow at his head, which brought him to
the ground. The negro then repeated his blows
until his victim was insensible, and his blood
spouted in all directions from his head and body.
The wife of Gorman interfered to rescue her hus
band, and received a terrible gash in the noon
Officer McCusker, of the Twelfth Ward Pollee,
reached the spot while the negro was still floor
inhing his weapon, and, in attempting to arrest
him, had one of his hands nearly cut oil' The
desperate man was finally secured and locked tip
in the Twelfth Ward Police Station. Gorman
Was conveyed to the New York Hospital, and is
thought to he in a dying condition.
