The- Detroit Free Press publishes an appeal
from the (pigs of Detkoit to the:Whigs of Weld:
gan to come to the resene of dountiy" frnin
sectional party, and id - favor of Burlap - in, We
shall publish it entire in a day or two. It is
signed by sixty nine of the most prominent Whigs
of that city, of 'whom the Free Press speaks as
follows :
AN EARNEST AND ELOQUENT APPEAL-WI:11GS OP DE
THOIT TO THE WHIGS OP MICHIGAN•
The paper we publish to-day, to which are ap
pended the names of sixty-nine gentlemen well
known as among the best and most influential citi
zens of Detroit, is one of the most remarkable events
in the political history of the State. It is as appeal
of Whigs to Whigs—of men many of whom have
hitherto been the very leaders of the Whig party of
Michigan, and not one of whom but has always been
an uncompromising and active prominent member of
that party, to their political brethren, regarding the
present crisis in the affairs of the country, In which
they declare their determination, in view of the dan
gers that beset the government, to cast aside fur the
nonce their party predilections, and throw their in
fluence and their votes for the Democratic candidates
for the Presidency and Vice-Presidency. Like °so.
Evans, the distinguished Whig of Maine, they are
ready to exclaim, If we have no flag of our own fly.
ing—if we have no trumpet to call us as Whigs--if,
' amid the smoke and dust of the strife and conflict of
other parties, we can see the flag of the Union flying
any where--if, amid the noise and din of arms, we
ran hear the trumpet of the Union sounding the rally,
we will nut stop to inquire who lends the forces that
protect it. And like Rufus Choate, the most eminent
of present New England statesmen, they survey the
whole ground, and announce that, " thr.e
ruf r Inc MIL BUCHANAN."
•
Never before was such a general alarm mani
fested in this country for the safety of our Union
and our institutions; and it is the most promi
nent and intelligent of the citizens that are fore
most to manifest the alarm ; and dropping all
party ties and prejudices, they are coming by
thousands to the only party that is national and
taut has power to avert the impending calamity.
Every day we hear of such changes; every day
announces them. They are the true men and
patriots who come thus to our ranks—the flower
of the old Whig party is and will be with us in
ictolier and November. The Whigs Of the North,
the South, the East and the West are in motion.
The Clays and Prestons of Kentucky : Jones,
of Tennessee; Pratt, Pierce and Johnston, of
Mart laud , Evans, of Maine : Choate, Winthrop,
Ashrutin, m.qachuseu. Hunt, Granger,
and other=, of New York ; Reed, Brown, llan
'tall, amt a host of others in our own State :
M'Lean, Ewing, of Ohio; a hundred prominent
whigs of Michigan —we need go no farther to show
with what general abhorrence the sectional ne
gro-loving party is viewed by true patriot..
True, they do Dot all declare at once for Buchan,
an ; but they are resolved that abolitionism shall
not ruin the best government and the most pros
perous nation in the world for one presidential
term more. If whigs can make such a sacrifice
of former predilections what efforts should the
dentnernts utake iu thi, momentous coolest

DISUNIONIST% COMING
lioncrs tireeley writes to a l'ittsburgher that
a grand effort is soon to bermade iu Western
Penn-ylvania to abolitionize the whole popula
tioo A Hood of documents is to be poured out,
arid abolition orators are to penetrate every dig.
trict; and nothing left undone to secure such
majorities for disunion in this end of the Stag•
as to overcome the great Buchanan and Union
majorities in the eastern 'counties.
Let our unterrified Democratic friends lie pre
pared for this inundation. The notorious Ford
of Ohio is traversing the State already. The
catfish Sumner is "possuniing" on the mountains.
Some others are detailed fur the work ; and
"Clifton House" Burlingame is daily expected
If Mariposa is exhausted the Massachusetts mil
lion dollars with which Pennsylvania is to be
bought will all be needed. We are glad to know
that the Democracy of this end of tlie State is
thoroughly aroused and active. Never before
was it so cordially united ; f 3.1 firm and in earn
est; and so able to laugh to scorn the puny ef
forts of its traitorous assailants. Send on your
Massachusetts money and apouters, Mr. horrors
Greeley ; the Democrats out this way know who
the traitors are, and how to treat them.
Cornmtltee,
JOHN VAN BIIHRN.—This gentleman reached
this city yesterday, and leaves this morning for
Salop Ohio, where be speaks to-day. He has
promised positively to be here and address a
meeting before the October election, and he will
be here on the 10th of September, if possible.
He is enlisted in this campaign in good earnest,
believing that the result of the election is o
vast importance to the safety of the country.
KANSAB.-It seems that the late reports of
another war commenced in Kansas, and Lecomp
ton taken, is like to prove another falsehood.
The fact of Lecompton having been attacked is
now denied. We suppose, of course, that there
will he no end of lies about Kansas until the
election is over. They are all the capital the
disunionists have, and they must continue to lie
about Kansas or fail utterly.
WILLIAM MCCLEAN, of Noblestown, is spoken
of very favorably as a candidate for Assembly.
Mr. McClean is a good citizen, and would make
an excellent representative. He will be named
for the action of the Convention to-day. The
people of his own district desire his nomination.
P. R. Sewvan, of this city, is spoken of by
many Democrats as a candidate for the Legisla
ture. He would make an excellent member. He
is toing good service in this campaign.

The New cootie andDar ltngtou Railroad:
: Xenia Editors :—/iltbough railroad .projects,
However sound and promising, are jnst now in
deep disfavor, the little improvement above
named presents its limited demands, and most
earnestly asks for a fair hearing from the busi
ness men and capitalists of Pittsburgh.
This road is to extend from Darlington station,
on the Ohio and Pennsylvania Railroad, to the
town of New Castle, in Lawrence county, a dis
tance of thirteen miles. Subscriptions in the
bonds of Lawrence county, and by private to
the amount of about two hundred thousand dol
lars have been secured, and the grading and
bridging of the whole distance, hate been let at
fair price:4, to a good firm of contractors. But
inure me ins will be required, and the citizens of
Pittsburgh are asked to eitend some aid to a
cheme of prime importance to this community.
Let us examine the claims of the New Castle
and Darlington Railroad to aid at the hands of
l'ittsburThers.
In the first place, it can be built and equipped,
beyond peradventure, within eight eon months
from this time. and with very little more means
than are vow secured.
In the second place, if no road connects with
it, it will pay dividends to stockholdeis front its
own proper business.
From actual examination of daily sales of
tickets for the stages front Enun to New Castle,
and front the books of the packets running on
the Erie extension, from New Brighton to New
Castle, there is now an aggregate of 100 passen•

DEMOCRATS, BEWARE!
The Democrats have a meeting tonight in the
.1111 Ward. The abolitieuinte ilflV3 called a
meeting at the Name time is that Par 1, iwd are
urging nil thoir men in the other Wards to at
tend. At 3 Fremont meeting in the Second
Val'l un Monday evening this met was au
nounced, and every one urged to go to the Sixth
Ward meeting to-night. Let our Detnooratie
Men& take warning from thin, and turn out in
all their strength. Turn out to the Sixth Ward
meeting, one and all, Democrats
PLAIN TA LK . —One of the speakers at the Fre
mont meeting in the Second Ward, on Monday
evening, commenced his speech by saying that
the first vote he ever cast was in that Ward, and
that it was against the present Constitution of
l'ennsylvania, because it did not give the negroes
a right to vote.
There it is. The negroes, negroes, negroes—
all the time the negroes. The interests of the
white race entirely overlooked by the abolition
ists. The elevation of the negroes to entire po
litical and social equality with the white race.
No wonder the party is called negro-worshippers
and the negro party. The Democratic party is
the party of the white race; and to that party
must the white race look for support of all its
interests. The Fremonters are exclusively em
ployed in fighting for the negroes.
"GOT U."—While standing talking at a strent
corner the other day with the Post Master of Al
legheny City, a very large negro, as black as
ink, came up, and tapping Mr. F. very famil
iarly on the shoulder, he said, " We've got you
now."
And what did he mean by we? Why the ne
groes and their worshippers, the Fremonters :
And they had "got us now," because they were
going to beat the Democracy or white race
party. Remember, white race, the African par
ty has " got us now."
WE have received from Thomas Howard, Esq.,
of Lawrenceville, a beautiful boquet, consisting
of rose's and twelve varieties of the verbena.
Its fragrance is very fine.
ESQ. 11.1.11TJE, of Allegheny city, and E. Hei
delberg, of Ohio township, have both been
named for the legislature. Either would make
a good representative.

DEAR SIRS:— . I mentiOned in my last letter to
you that probably you might hear from me again
soon relative to the doings of the great Path
tinder in California. In the first place, gentle
men, probably you are not aware who or what
the men were who brought J C. Fremont for
ward in California for the United States Senate.
Well, gentlemen, it wile a set of nefarious land
speculators or, they might he well termed land
sharks. They were the men who sent him to the
Senate. Their object in doing so was to get this
very Bill passed that he brought up in the Sen
ate—for the Government to dispose of the min
eral lands in California to land speculators; and
then these land sharks were ready to pounce
upon the whole country. Some of them even
went so far as to stake 'out large bodies of the
mineral lands with the expectation that this Bill
would pans and become a law. Vi liv, gentlemen,
there was a party of them, six in number, same
to where I was located, and took up some thous
ands of acres of laud, or at least they staked it
out and made their marks, and this very land
was considered the richest gold bearing land in
california ; and there were some two thousand
mines working. Well, these sharks remained
there until they gut news that Fremont's Bill
was killed in the Senate then they up stakes
and left. One of them, however. happened to
let the cat out of the bag to me Ly saying that
they had expected that the government would
pass a law for disposing of the mineral lauds in
California. I will refer to these land sharks
again before lam done. Now this was the man
ner is which J. C. Fremont was elected to the
Senate. Ms Black Republican friendi make
snob au ado about "ten cent Jimmy lowering
the wages of the laborer why in the' name of
heaven do they not take the mote out of their
own candidate's eye. For here we have him

When they produced a paper which he said looked
very ancient and on which he said the title was
drawn up in all the extravagant Spanish insignia
and formula. He said he read it and came to the
conclusion that his cake Wai all (lough, and he

to hold the paper up to the light, when forts

with the understanding that any one of you who
i found upon them after that period will receive
a dose or cold lead. He said they took to their
heels, and that was the last of them. I merely
give you this to show you the manner in which
they perpetrated their frauds. As regarded Col.
Fremont, he stood very low in the estimation of
the people in California at that time, and has
not gained much in their estimation since. Clow
is it that most of his companions who accompa
nied him in his explorations of the Rocky Moun
tains have deserted him. There in the gallant
Kit Carson, a far nobler man than over Fremont
was, where is he now ? Why in direct opposition
to him. Why, the fact is, that in his travels
with Fremont he became fully acquainted with
his principles and unfitness for the high office he
is aspiring to, and of coarse as a good and noble
citizen cannot support him, and so it is with all
the rest. I remain yours &c.,
With the greatest respect,
PIANKALETA.
"PIANICALSTA" speaks out again from his
"wigwam." It is California testimony "by a
man that's been there." Read it, and under
stand something of Fremont's reputation, and
conduct towards the laboring men and honest
citizens of California. Was there ever such a
man named for the Presidency before?
We have heard many Democrats urge the nom
inetion of James A. Irwin, of the Seventh ward
for Associate :Judge. Ile is an excellent citi
zen and would make a good Judge. He would
no doubt, accept the nomination.
