ld Falls them . : are representing
173 Saving great advantage over the
)uSequerien of the 'three-fifths repro
. the slaves in our national legislature.
The Democrats have not hitherto considered this
lie worth
_answering, but now, just for the sake
of showing the falsity of nearly all their stories,
we will show that the South loses histead of
gaining by that arrangement of the representa
tion. The negro party will not of course deny
that the negroes are human beings, and a part
of the population of a State, and are counted as
such in the census tables. We quote, then, from
an eichange, (the Plcundeales ,) to show that the
South loses instead of gaining by the three fifths
rule.
"There is a great misapprehension in the
North about the three-fifths representation of the
slaves of the South.
•' The South loses by the three-fifths represen
tation twelve Congressmen: because, in'tnaking
up the inhabitants of the South for representa
tion, two-fifths of the slaves are thrown out. It
takes 93,713 inhabitants, North and South, to
make a Congressman. In the North, whites,
blacks, women, children, idiots—all who are per
-1,0118 are counted. In the South, all are counted
except two-fifths of the slaves. Thus two-fifths
are a dead loss to the South in their count.
“Suppose a slaveholder has 100 slaves; does
he cast Si votes l* One for himself and 60 for
his 100 slaves ? Manifestly, no. He gives but
one vote. But in making up the basis of Con
gressional representation—his 100 slaves count
sixty persons., Thus the South loses by this
clause of the Constitution.
-A man in the South may own one hundred or
one thouifand elaves—le goes to the polls and
gives his vote t one side i—another, as poor as
'Job's turkey,' if you please, differing from him
in political sentiment, votes on the other side,
and kills the first vote as effectually as he does it
in soy of the northern States."
And in regard to the extension of slavery, a
few facts will show the constant falsehood of the
negro Republican journals and orators. We quote
from the same paper:
"The Republican leaders and editors are con
stantly harping upon what they are pleased to
term the .• horrible extension of slavery," which
has occurred mince the organization of our gee.
eminent. Let us look at the facts. When our
constitution was adopted the Union consisted of
twelve slave States and one free State. Now we
have fifteen .slave States and sLcteen free unee.
The advance of freedom has been as nih-en to
three, or five to one, WI compared to slavery. A
further fact can he shown, says the °ram& Er,,,
that we hale a leas ai.ioll/11 of slave territory—
States and all of couese—than we had when the old
confederate .government was organized, notwith
standing the vast increase of our territorial di
mensions; and, in the face of all this, men, pre
tending to he honest and Intelligent, go around
the country mouthing about the aggrresions of
slavery, when they very well know, but are not
honest enough to admit, that by no act, legislative
or oo,erwtse, on the part of this government, has
been extended to firer terrtory, but on the
contrary, terntory acquired as sloes has been made

The South had constantly the subject of sla
very under discussion, its disadvantages and
mode of extinction.
The difficulties with which the South had an I
has to contend, and which the North had not, are
as follows:
First. rite South eannot rerel r'r pay m r
slaves as (he North did.
This single item involves the 100,, to the Scull]
of over two thousand millions of dollars, which
they would receive if they had a market—f,x
them outside of their limits
This fact alone should cause the exercise of
the utmost charity in the judgment of the Nord.,
who enjoy the proceeds of their emancipation.
Again: An immense difficulty is, how ehsll
the South, eimultaneonsly with the abolition of
elavery, get rid of the negroes from their tnifst.
rhd
This, tun, is a mountain of difficulty, nu I
evr•ry idle knows its solution is beget with diffi
culties, so that the wisest and hest of men are in
painful anxiety to solve it properly.
ts supporter of Fremont
A friend of Joshua R. Giddings writes from
Washington, denying that he ever used certain
treasonable and infamous language which has
been attributed to him, and never denied before,
to our knowledge. Here is what Mr. Giddings
admits he did say :
"I would not be understood as desiring a servile
insurrection; but I say to southern gentlemen, that
there are hundreds of thousands of honest and patri•
Laic men who " will laugh at your calamity, and will
mock when your fear cometh." If blood and mas
sacre should mark the struggle fur liberty of there
who for ages have been oppressed and degraded, my
prayer to the God of Heaven shall be, that Jesti,,
unyielding Justice—may be awarded to Loth
waster ilud slave."
This is the kind of language a supporter of
Fremont and high priest among the Black Re
publicans boasts he used. Does any one suppose
for a moment that should Col. Fremont be elect
ed, and the Giddingses, the Chases and the Sew
ards become his Cabinet advisers, (as they un
doubtedly will be) that the South would not be
goaded and taunted until a dissolution of the
Union would inevitably follow ; The words
quoted above will become deeds when the aboli
tionists get into power, and then—it is easy to
foresee the result.
THE TEN CENT LIE
The speech made by James Buchanan in 1840,
in the Senate, on the Independent Treasury bill,
is the one out of which the more base portion of
the disunionists endeavor to show that Mr. Bu
chanan was in favor of lowering the wages of
labor. That speech has now been re-published
in pamphlet form, and is circulated all over the
country. The people should read it and then
hand it along to their neighbors to be read. All
who read it will he satisfied of the baseness of the
charge. And no one can rise from its perusal
without being convinced by its sound arguments.
It is entirely iu favor of the working men.
We see not how any one after reading that
speech, can belieye anything the Black Repub
licans can say against Mr. Buchanan.
MASS Mllir - intl.—There is to be a grand Dem
ocratic mass meeting at Belem, Ohio, on the
27th inst. John Van Buren and other distin
guished speakers are to be there. It is but
about three haus ride from Pittsburgh, and ou r
two cities should turn tint a large delegation.
THE Democratic gain in North Carolina this
year is over 8.000. The Democratic candidate
for governor is elected by over 18,000.

Some people favor disunien in order that there
by they may get clear of responsibility for slav
ery. Their principle is,.that religion and moral
ity do nit allow as to aid in the support of a
government which sanctions institutions or meas
ures whirh morality condemns. This is the doc
trine th.,t has caused most of the divisions of the
church of Christ, and which Is still dividing the
very denominations that proclaim it. By its fruit
ye may judge it. All denominations maintain that
the church must be an organized body, and yet
this doctrine, the foundation of their divisions,
must fel ever prevent that organization until hu
man seciety has grown to. perfection, and then
the present office of the churoh will be ended.
If there had been ten good men in Sodom the
Lord would have preserved it bad as it 77118.
Samuel annointed a King in Israel, because, this
was necessary for union and order: though it
was int.nded that the Israelites should live iu
union a, ,l order without a King.
With ruch a doctrine there could he no govern
ment keened among men, for there can be no
frame of government that will not, in the opinion
of perhaps the most of the thinking men, sanc
tion something which morality condemns. If this
doctrine were conscientiously applied to political
organizations, it would rive them all to atoms.
If applied to political parties, you can join none
of them without, at least, indirectly, aiding nu
merous frauds. Its falsity is proved by its im
practicability. There is no danger, therefore, of
its general adoption : hut there is danger to poli
tical systems when it unites with other doctrines to
secure their overthrow. It always nets inconsist
antly, for it freely unites with political and reli
gious infidels or disappointed politicians to over
throw an existing government, and produce
disorder which it cannot afterwards control. It
is a principle of destruction and not of construe
lion. If it were true there could be no states
men, for there could be no States. There could
he no churches either. Oa this principle the
fragmentary character of ancient government
would be nothing to ours, for the higher the
knowledge, short of perfection, the more princi
ples of difference would taere be
We may acquire a clear distinction between
moral and religious doctrines on the one hand,
and political doctrines on the other by noticing
the difference in their functions. Morality and
religion express and teach our highest attain
able ideas of duty, and not those that are admit
ted by all. Their abject is to elevate 'the race to
its highest perfection. Politics or government
on the other hand expresses and enforces the
ideas of order to which the generality of a pee
pie have already reached. Its office so far as it
relates to individuals, is to preserve that degree
of order which the commonsense of a people de.
matls, and thus to allow to all to have free scope
in training themselves te the highest possible de.
gree. Its idea of order must of course be ceu
etantiy elevated as morality and religion succeed
in their office of elevating the common sense of
the people. A people cannot make laws found
ed on ideas which they Is nut understand or re•
ceive. Laws of order that are contrary to their
common sense must he felt oppressive, however
true and important they may seem to those who
have bad a higher training I speak not here of
the institutions by which government is to be
managed. These, like the special forms of con
ducting all business, are nut mere matters cf
common sense, but require some special training
God has committed to man the (fey of fram
ing his own government, and without this he
should not be a free and responsible being Ile
cause he is imperfect, his government must be
so, for he cannot help it. If it were the highest
possible perfection it would he uutrue, because

wrong, because not adapted to his enn , lition. lit
the very nature of things roan's laws must often
be wrong. beeause he must make them, rind can
not possibly make them perfect. Are they to
be disregarded by religion for this" Then reil
gion is essentially di-orderly. it imposes up,
imperfection the duties of legislation, and then
annuls its necessarily imperfect work Nei'
more than this, the mere perfect raligien is, the
more disorderly it becomes, en this principle .
for it sees more clearly the sad consequences
imperfect laws. Those laws are-red wrong that

A NEW WAY OF ADVERTTSTEO.—The wife of
a jeweler at Saratogo, who hes a $lO,OOO dia
mond left for sale, appeared at the hop at Con
gress Hall a few evenings since, with not only
the full diamond upon her person, but other
jewels, amounting to $5,000. The jeweler's
shop was, in consequence, run down with custo
mers, the next day. The best of the joke is ma
ny of the guests supposed her to be the wife of
a Southern millionaire, so proudly and so digni

GREAT MEETING IN BEDFORD
ON SATPRDAY, AUGUST 16T11
A meeting was determined upon late on Wed
nesday evening. The Gazette announced it next
morning, and the Democracy stopped their
ploughs —the anvil ceased its music, and the
people gathered in. They don't need any run
tiers, nor handbills, nor any other kind of ma
nieuvring to gat up a meeting. The announce
ment made, and the people do the balance. The
masses are moved as if the spirit of the times
were volcanoes beneath them. The black cloud
of Abolitionism is even now scattering. The
spectre of Know Nothingism is horrified and
vanishing.
At :3 o'clock a large delegation came in from
Napier and Juniata, headed by a band of. music
and flying colors. The people from all direc
tions came pouring in, till the streets, pavements
and alleys were filled with live Democrats.
Hundreds called upon Mr. Buchanan, who was
stopping at the Bedford Hotel. Men, women
and children rushed to see him. It is no strange
thing to see Mr. Buchanan here. The people-of
this county see him almost every spring season.
He is not only our choice now, but our cherished
choice. He is now a candidate for the highest
office in the world, and with brighter prospects
of success than any candidate that has ever pro
ceeded him, except, probably, Washington; yet
he is the same plain, unvarnished Mr. Buchanan
that we have always seen. When you see him,
you like him best.
After many gratulations and greetings, the
people, in mass, moved up to the Court House,
which, stretched to its utmost capacity, would
not hold them all.
Col. Samuel W. Black was there, and it was
not long till we all knew it ; for his thundering
was heard. The eagle was in the skies, and we
sat beneath the branches of the foliage His
argument, constitutional and historical, as well
as upon the signs of the times, together with his
thrilling peals of eloquetice peculiar to himself,
made it the beat speech, we will venture to any,
that has been made since the campaign opened.
His reply to the Abolition Ford, of Ohio, w 9.9 the
axe laid to the root of the tree. Gov. Ford told
us, in his speech, that he had been to Mexico.
Col. Black did not tell us he bad been there; but
we all knew it.
When the Colonel spoke of what the North and
the South did there, we don't exaggerate when
we say that we saw tears abed by some brave
spirits in the audience, who had been there too.
The ladies who were there in great numbers
from Bedford, and from the Springs, did not
fail to let the hero and orator know how he was
appreciated. Ho was followed by George H.
Brewer, Esq , of Chamber:dn-it, in a masterly
and eloquent speech. This over, and everybody
having found their lungs to be good ones, the
meeting dispersed. We say to every county in
the State, do as we are doing and the majority
for Buchanan and Breckinridge will be fifty
thousand.
