SATURDAY, MORNING AUGUST 23.
The Alleged Counterfeiting Case
We mentioned yesterday that a number of persons
in thie city and Allegheny had been arrested on a
chaste of manufacturing and uttering counterfeit
coin, on testimony sworn to by Adam Grossmeyer.
Grosemeyer bad offered to give information for a
consideration, but was forestalled by being arrested
himself on a charge of passing bogus quarters. He
is the husband of the woman who charged Dr. Ber
ger, some weeks since, with taking improper liberties
with her person, which, on an examination before an
Alderman, was dismissed. This information charges
Robert Weddell and Joseph Spratley, of Allegheny,
and James McDermott, of the Fifth ward, Pitts•
burgh, wiih being engaged 11 - 3 - The business, and on
Tuesday they were taken into custody for a further
hearing yesterday afternoon, before Alderman Park
inson. The first ease taken up was that of Adam
Groasmeyer, On an information made by officer lie
bangh, Messrs. C. McClure Hayes and Samuel C.
Wingard appearing as his counsel.
A number of witnesses were sworn and examined,
but no feels elicited tending to show his guilt. In
consequence of the absence of some witnesses en the
part of the United States, Groesmeyer's case was ad
journed until Monday 'beet, et 2 P. M.
The ease of the United States against James Mc-
Dermott and Robert Weddell, was then taken up and
Groasmeyer cross-examined on the information he
had previously made. The following was elicited -
Adam Grosemeyer— Cross Era mined—Have been
living on Walnut street, Pittsburgh, for the last year ;
worked in the mill ; have seen Weddell and hits to
gether in Allegheny nearly a year ago.; it was on
Chesnut street; they passed me; never seen them
together since that time; saw McDermott have bo
gus coin about ten days ago; he was in his own
souse, about noon of the day ; it was the only time I
ever saw him with any ; he had it in his 1181:11i 1,13 at,
I saw him ; can't say where he got it; they were a
couple of one dollar pieces; no other person was
present; it was in the bar room ; was at his house
some time in July; I wsa al Spratley's house twice;
ho wasn't ; it was also in July; saw James
Mason's wife there; was sent to Spratley's house;
also saw Weddell there; I saw the bogus coin made
by Joseph Spratley saw Spratley make it end Wed
dell wee p re vent , I s,vr Mr. Weddell have some
been oath at his own house; that ens a few days af
ter being at Spratley's ; I saw a number of women
there; saw one, and heard several others talk ; hare
known Mr. Weddell by eight, going on two years ;
he lives in 'Allegheny, in the second street hack from
the river: can't say how often I have conversed
with Mr. Weddell; never EAR' hill) pans any Logo,
coin; never of my own knowledge knew hint to sell
bogus coin; he was sitting in the root at Stiratle's,
looking at him making the coin ; saw Weddell with
bogus coin at his own house to July ; it bent in my
hand ; they were s2.} and $1 geld pieces, and halve ,
and quarters in silver; never saw him pass any
never knew him to sell any ; and never saw blot
"run" any; saw him with it in his hands : Wed
dell never offered me any ; can't either resew write.
Messrs. R. H. Stowe, E. P. Jones and Juhrt Coyle,
appeared for McDermott and Weddell.
Ald. Parkinson decided to hold them in $3OO hail ,
for a further hearing on Monday next, at 2 o'clock
P. M. It was. promptly given, 'and they were aet at
liberty. There woo no tertimony offered except
Gossmeyer's against them.

Army Bill Passed the House!
THE KANSAS PROVISO ATTACHED.
WASEUNGTtoN, August 22.—The two Houses of
Congress re assembled to day, at twelve o'olock, in
accordance with the President's proclamation.
The galleries of both Houses were crowded to ex
cess, and intense interest is everywhere manifested.
The Senate was called to order at 12 o'clock, 38
Senators being present. The President's proclama
tion convening the two Houses of Congress in extra
session, was read.
On motion of Mn i Hunter, the Secretary of the
Senate was ordered tb. acquaint the House that a
quorum was assembled, and that the Senate was
randy to proceed to business.
Mr. Hunter submitted a resolution suspending so
much of the 2let rule as requires six days to elapse
from the commencement of the extra session before
receiving the consideration of the bills, be., remain
inc undetermined at the close of the last session, so
far as relates to the army appropriation hill.
Mr. Seward said that as he had no desire to expe
dice the passage of that hill in such a way as to in
terfere with free action of the House, be should call
yeas and nays on the resolution, remarking that be
paired off with Mr. Toombs, and should uot, there
Core, vote.
The resolution passed. Teas 35, nays 6.
A resolution was adopted continuing the tandiug
