OF PENNSIA. VA 1% lA.

OF K ENTUCK Y
DEMOCRATIC STATE TICKET

pTyOROE SCOTT, or Ccriumans Co.
JACOB FRY, Jr., lIONTOOMIRY Co.
PURVEYOR MISTRAL:
JOBB BOWS, OF FRANKLIN CO.
Extracts from Bneltanan , s Spe_sh on the
Independent Treasury Bill.
"THAT COUNTRY 19 MOST PROSPEROUS WHERE LA•
808 COMMANDS TUE GREATEST REWARD.
"FROM MY SOUL I RESPECT TUE LABORING MAN.
LABOR IS THE FOUNDATION OF THE WEALTH OF
EVERY COUNTRY, AND THE FREE LABORERS OF THE
NORTH DESERVE RESPECT FOR THEIR PROBITY AND
INTELLIGENCE. HEAVEN FORBID THAT I SHOULD
DO THEM WRONG I"
IT WAS PROVIDENTIAL
Henry Ward Beecher says in the New York
Independent, of which be is one of the editors,
that the nomination of Fremont is providential.
For once we agree with rifle Beecher. We be
lieve that the hand of Providence may he seen in
all human events; - and in none more distinctly
than in those great events that have resulted in
making this the greatest and freest and most
prosperous nation ou the globe. God has not
so dealt by any other people."
The mission of the American republic; though
well begun, is not yet half accomplished ; and
its destruction now will not be permitted. Could
the party that has nominated Fremont succeed in
electing him, disunion would speedily follow, and
with it a train of evils and disasters more fatal
than ever afflicted any other nation. But happily,
Proridentially, a man is put iu nomination by
the disunion conspirators whom the people wilt
refuse to support
Ist. Because he is not honest. They will not
elevate to the highest office in the nation a man
who, in a much lower office, speculated with the
people's money—run the government in debt fur
his own private emolument ; acid got rich by the
_.- - fraUdttlent, use of a military commission that he
had, 11011 try influence, and not by merit. They
will not elevate to so high an office a man who,
as a Lieutenant Colonel, was arraigned before a
fair and competent tribunal for mutiny and diEo
bedienoe of orders, found guilty, and dismissed
from the service.
2d. The people will not support him, because
he has no capacity to fill the high office for which
his deluded friends have nominated him. Twen
ty-one days only of experience as a legislator
has he bad. And in that lime instead of reply
ing by argument to charges made against him,
he assails with blows, like a ruffian, a gray
haired Senator, much less in size than himself.
Not one act of his brief legislative career ex
hibits any capacity except for waylaying and
striking men of smaller stature. But one bill
does he originate, and that was designed to cot
out of their claims and chances of prosperity the
great mass of the laborers of the State that for
snob brief time entrusted him with office. No
act of his life exhibits anything more than the
ordinary capacity ot'any captain in the army.
3d. The people will not support him bey ruse
,he is not attaelied to The Constitution and the
Onion : Born. and inisidlin the South, and (da
unted-by the chttritY i 6 ladies, he yet betrays
it, and seeks the nomitiation of a party that re
vilea'and'slanders the Sontik hat labors to dis
solve the Union and destray the Constitnti,
and light up the flames of civil way. one of his
warmest supporters in the nominating Com en
lion was Joshua It. Giddings, who some years
ago was expelled from Congress for uttering the
following treasonable and villainous words
"1 look forward to the day when there .ball
"be a servile insurrection in the South ; when the
"black man, armed with British bayonets, and
"led on by British orlicers, shall atssert his free
"dom, and wage a war of extermination against
"his master : when the torch of the Ineenchary
"shall light up the tou-na and cities of the South,
"though I may not moakdit their calamity, nor
"laugh when their fear cometh, yet I mill /4"; it
"as the dawn of a political mdcnnium."
Such is the man and such is the party that
selects Fremont as its disunion candidate.
..•• Is
he honest? Is he capable Is he attached to
the Constitution t" Neither: And time people
will find it out soon enough to repudiate bin,
What thee, it may he asked is there that io
Providential in his nomination ? It is that the
party that contemplates a great crime against
human liberty, and the ruin of a great nation,
has been judicially blinded in the selection of a
candidate. They have in their madness selected
one whose public acts and career have been PO
reckless and reprehensible that, when in tdc
known to the people, they will bring down em
phatic condemnation of his wild presnmptton.
"Whom God designs to destroy he first makes
mad." And surely no greater evidence of insani
ty is needed than the nomination for the Presi
dency of the dishonest cattle dealer; the diso
bedient and discarded soldier ; the brawling Si na
tor ; the enemy of the laborer; and the cm
ecienceless land monopolist. To destroy so dan
gerous a party as the disunionist just such an
insane nomination was needed, and Providence
has ordained it.
Iti6e Beecher is right ; the nomination of Fre
mont is Providential.
WILLIAM A. STuKES, Esq.—Our readers, and
especially those who have heard the unanswera
ble and most eloquent address of this gentleman
on Wednesday night, will be glad to know that
he has accepted au invitation to speak at the
Convention on the lUth September. While the
Democrats applauded the noble efforts of Mr.
Stokes in behalf of the principles of their patty,
the Republicans and Americans, many of whom
were at the meeting in Wilkins Hall, express
their approval of the candor, clearneis, and un
flinching fairness with which this distinguished
gentleman discussed the questions at issue in the
present contest.
AN AWFUL MENACE.—The Gazette thus grain
matioally menaces any poor Black Republican
Congressman who may, from a returning sense
of duty to his country, desert the revolutionary
movement in Congress, and vote for the Army
Appropriation bill :
"The eye. of the country is upon them, and woe
to the Northern &presentative. who jails in this
critical moment."
"Eyes right," Deacon ! " Eyes right !" Take
care of your grammar !
Cot. Huon BRADY.—We had the pleasure of
meeting in our city, yesterday, Col. Brady of
Brookville, Jefferson oounty. He is an eminent
lawyer and one of the first citizens of that
county. He has been a Whig for many years,
but is now earnestly at work for Buohanan and
Breckinridge. He will do good service in the
cause in his own district and elsewhere. He
will take the stump and work hard till the elec
tion.
THE WHELP.—The editor of the Gazette thinks
'our calling Fremont a beef-breeding swindler a
personal insult to every supporter of Fremont.
What, then, about the term " ten cent Jimmy,"
which stands at the head of the Gazette, after the
N. Y. Tribune, and every decent man in the
country denounces it as a lie?
"Thoughts for true Patriots," shouldibe read
by all who would understand thetrutk. Oar
correspondent is an excellent writer.

of said $2,500,000, and on the credit of his name
said city subscription was obtained.

6th. That Edward D. Gazzam has been sued
for said stock and penalty, now $8,460, (never
having paid one dollar,) although the .city and
county have paid $1,050,000, in bonds, now
drawing interest from the Treasury ; and is re
pudiating his subscription.
"Edward D. Gamin now seeks to he Senator of
Allegheny county, with power to legislate over
the remedy for collecting said subscription, or to
move the place of trial ant of this county, where
it cannot be well followed.
"Will the Republicans of this county sele , t

New, if that is what a member of his own
party can say of him, hig election ought to lui
cuniiidered rather doubtful. More anon.

Respectfully yours,
EUGENE DA lA.
Mr. Davis, above referred to, we are informed,
is the keeper of the oyster saloon IWIIPAth ,I„h u
NlcDonnell's restaurant, in Common street, in
this pity. lie succeeded in getting his wife, we
learn, into a place of ,afety, mot then started to
procure aid. lie was accompanied to Berwick's,
we are informed, by the engineer of the steamer
Star, which he left on Tuesday morning.
The depth of water on the island, referring, as
we understand it, to the highest portion, i , re
ported at five feet. The wreck of the steamboat
Star is stated to he lying on the island, near
where the hotel of Johu Muggan formerly •good.
The rise of the inundation is said to have been
of unparalleled rapidity, the height of five feet
being reported to have been attained in two min
utes! Although we were to read "hours" i n _
stead of " minutes," it will not be difficult to un
derstand what a wild excitement and fearful
havoc it must have caused, with no succor at
hand.
All the houses on the island were swept away,
and it is most particularly reported that most or
those staying at the hotel were drowned.
A list of the reported victims, we are inform
ed, was forwarded to Brashear City or Berwick's
Bay, but we have not been able to find any one
in the city who has brought up a copy of it with
him. We have, however, heard the names of a
few of those alleged to have been drowned, and
give them as they have reached us: but w i t h out
vouching for their correctness: Mr. - Bart, of
this city; Wm. Rochelle, of Pattersonville ; Mrs.
Como, [name probably otherwise spelt] of Pat.
tersonville ; John Muggan, [co-proprietor of the
hotel,] wife, five children and brother: Mrs.
Maskell and two children of Franklin ; the bar
keeper of the hotel [name not ascertained.]
It it stated that there were about 400 persons

A remarkable occurrence took place at the
• Bine Ridge Tunnel last niglit. The third set of
workmen were engaged in digging as usual, when
one of them (Pat Plagant noticed that the tex
ture of the rock before him changed suddenly
front hard to soft, and that the soft was wet.
Shortly afterward a stream of water issued from
an oritiee he had made. This was succeeded by
a heavy, rumbling sound "like the ears," which
so frightened the bands that they all made fur
the open air. Well was it for them that they did

middle of the mountain, an immense cavern or
pocket, in which water from the melting snow
has been deposited fur years, and that the line of
the tunnel taps this cavern near its centre. The
cavern is of immense extent, and will save the

It may be safely inferred, however, that the
worst of it as a whole is given in our version of
it, and that efficient aid has been forwarded to
the survivors. The fact of a list of those sacri

spot the survivors were collected, and in a posi
