TUESDAY MORNING::::i
The moat casual reader must see that the inten
tion of the Legislature, in enacting the above law,
was to rid the Stale effeetually of the nuisance of
small bills. The provisions of the act are full and
explicit, and it is, and ins st continue to ha a cause of
serious regret and lumpy enienre, that our citizens . '"
will persistently violate them. Banking houses and
private individuals are daily and hourly acting in
violation of the plain instructions of this law, and
what is worse and more reprehensible, the ex
ecutors of the laws, and our magistrates and othta
officers, are boldly setting the example of flagrant
disregard of it. Have our judges, whose sworn
duty it is to coo the laws executed, forgotten their
obligations and their trusts! Have our magistrates
and constables any regard for the obligations of a
solemn oath ? Are our statutes a mockery, to invite
to lawlessnels and contempt?
It is idle to say the law cannot be observed. It is
observed in the eastern and middle counties of the
State, and the result is, that while respect for law is
encouraged, its object is accomplished, and gold and
silver are abundant, and fully equal to the demand.
As it is, we are flooded with a trash only surpar,ed
by the abominabl e shinplaster, of other slays, as, de
faced that the genuine are not distinguishable from
the spurious, Berne of them thousands of miles from
home, and so filthy as to contaminate the bearer s, itb
psora or something worse. The Pennsylvania Hail.
road Company will not take small notes for fare. bur
will they even take foreign bills of any denomination
not par. Why, then, cannot all corporations and all
others take a stand in removing the nuisance. and

Muted hue hot Mari-int.—An interesting ease Tins
before Ald. Wilson yesterday, which will probably
result in a "marriage for convenience." Barbara
auturer, a buxom looking Berman girl of four and
twenty, made information against *Joiiii Kaiser, also
from the Faderland, and shout of her own age,
charging him with being the father of her child, I,n
infant of six months. They had been living iu the
name house fifteen months ago— she as help and he
as boarder—when the accident occurred. John tied
for the time, but coming back again a few week•
since was asked to bear the expense of the little
one's keeping--a very small favor, considering the
sirrumstanees of the rase---which he agreed to do,
but only kept the word of promise to the ear to break
it to the hope. Barbara, having no other resoulo:
than the law, proceeded yesterday in due form, when
the repentant John proposed marriage, to which she
agreed, stipulating that it he ilvne according to the
forms and ceremonies of the Holy Homan Catholic
Church. To this be demurred, and-was consequent
ly committed for the time. He will probably got

Finding that this kind of a political creed did not
suit the enlightenment of the lAI6 century, and by
it they were likely to grow "small by degrees and
beautifully less," the American Republicans on Sat
urday, at their primary meetings, proceeded to select
a number of the ostracised class of last year, to seats
in their Conventio, which meets to-morrow. It is
even said the linow-Nothing leaders have consulted
together, and cone to the conclusion that it would
lie politic to put "n Dutchman " on their Assembly

wei , 'who have the disposition, and only await the
time nhed they have the power, to rstb them of their
dearest poWical and religious rights. The Know-

posed success in pulling the wool over the eyes cif
the " Dutch and Irish." When the election day has
passed the laugh will be on the other side. Very
probable.
A House Priming Tcleyroph.--We saw, yesterday,
in the Union Telegraph Office, on Wood street, one
of these beautiful instruments—the only one, we be
lieve, that has ever been brought to this city. It i?
to work the new wires going up between Pittsburgh
and Philadelphia, which are to be galvanised, and
will afford as perfect a means of communication AS
enjoyed anywhere. This ILAN Instrument, we are
informed by Mr. Hall, the manager of the Union
office, cost $.500, and will do its work much more
perfectly and beautifully than the old instruments.
to appearance it is not unlike a small piano, having
a full bank of keys, to correspond with every letter
in the alphabet. The new wires are expected to be
in operation by the let of September, when out citi
zens will have an opportunity of inspecting the
workings of this ingenious and admirable piece of
mechanism.
romp Meeting at Torentum.—lty reference to an
advertisinent it will be seen that the Allegheny Vol
ley Railroad have made preparations to accommodate
those who wish to attend the Camp Meeting at Tur-

break up until about the middle of next week. tr.
