AUGUST 18• SIXTH ANNUAL EXHIBITION • OE THE PENNSYLVANIA - STATE AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY, AT PITTSBUItdIi On SEPTEMBER 30th, and on OCTOBER Ist, Ad and 3d, 1856: JefA ROST. C. WALKER, Secretary. .AMber of the Press Ae Muffed by a Custom Rouse Officer.--Somo days ago the following para graph appeared in the local department of the Daily Dispatch, of is city : • " An easy berth is that of Custom House officer at this port—so easy, indeed, that the moat rampant fire-eating disunionist of the far South might be tempted to take it, under the most violent abolition president. Not a very long time ago ton thousand dollars disappeared because. the watchman was drow sy—and but a few days ago an importer who called during business hours to swear to an invoice of for eign goods was informed that the business man of the establishment was asleep, and could not be dis turbed, and requested to call when he had awakened. Really our Custom House is not overrun with buai ness, or its atmosphere is eminently soporific '" On Saturday afternoon, as Wm. H. Whitney, Esq., local editor of the above paper, was passing along Smithfield street, in front of the Custom House, ho was assaulted by Mr. John Taylor, one of the officers of Customs at this port_ Mr. Whitney is much the smaller man of the two, and was therefore rather roughly handled, particularly as we believe he made no resistance whatever. He, however, lodged an in formation before Alderman McMaster, who had Taylor arrested and held to bail. We did not hear in what sum—but probably considerably less than .fen thousand dollars. Injunction to be asked jor.—The Chronicle says the Board of Directors of the Third Ward School intend, as coon as the District Court meets, to apply for an injunction to restrain Messrs. Hammer di Dottier, cabinet makers, frotn carrying on their business in the now building which they have just put up adjoining the Third Ward School House. The application will be based on the ground that the noise made by the machinery and workmen in the establishment must materially interfere with the sludfei of the pupils and compel the abandonment of the building adjoining the factory. The question is a novel one, and it+ decision will be looked fur with no little , anxiety. Should the School Board succeed in obtaining the injunction, other applictt Lions from similar institutions, subjected to griev prices of the same character, will be immediately ',j„ before the same Court. pa, p„,i,;„;.--Larye Deobwratir 6,,thering.—Tlio Democracy of this city raised a beautiful pole on Saturday evening on Water street, between Grant and Smithfield. It was Or IckorS , with one Ppliee, and altogether was one hundri'l and twenty-five feet in height. Two magnificent national fists streamed from its ample proportions as it i j , tti raked amid deafening cheers. The crowd present bered upward of one thousand, who were addressed by a number of speakers. The first gentleman who spoke was Porter R. Sawyer; he was was followed by Alexander McKinney > Esq., of Westmoreland, who In turn was succeeded by A. B. McCalmut.t. This is the largest and most beautiful pole yet mist d su our county, the top of which is surmounted by a rooster which will certainly crow over a Democratic victory oath° morning of the sth of November, if he is spared so long. A Lucky Removal.--A grocer In the Fifth Ward had his house entered one day butt week, in broad day light, and the money bureau ransacked, but for tunately the day before he had "removed the depos its " to a bank at the earnest solicitation of his son, who seemed to have a premonition of bad luck.
