F. Gillrno ,, , e,ltor. of P,st One of the largest Democratic meetings ever held in Bedford, has just adjourned. Ccl. Black made a speech which, for argument and eloquence, could not be excelled by any man in the Union. He literally annihilated pc Ford. A large number of ladies were in attendance, and the most unbounded enthu siasm prevailed. Bedford is certain for Buchanan and Breckinridge by a handsome majority. TRH PARTIES, AND THEIR SEVE RAL TASKS. Never was a division of labor more clearly marked out in any mechanical employment or manufacturing establishment, than there is now between the two political parties that support Buchanan and Fremont. The Fremont par ty is solely and entirely devoted to the negroes. To the three or four million negroes in this country that party devotes all its sympa thies and efforts and energies. To elevate the African race in this country to a complete eqtjal ity of political and social condition with the white race, is the one aim of the party that sup ports Fremont. Not one line in their political platform, not one sentiment in the speeches of their orators, has any other ultimate aim then the negroes and their rights and interests. That is their task, their aim, and the snm total of their diligent and fanatic efforts. On the other hand, the great Democratic party, while wishing no ill to the negroes, assumes, and is invested with the task of guarding, promotiug and advocating all the best interests of the twenty-three millions of white people of tl-i' country. It believes the white the superior race—the race that ie, and of right should be, the ruling race. It believes that it is vain to at tempt to mingle the two races together upon a footing of entire political and social equality. It believes that such a condition is utterly unat tainable except through the sinful process of practical amalgamation and general intermar riage It believes that Providence neverdesigned such an admixture, and that nature and reason, when unclouded, revolt St the thought. The 'Demo cratic party at the North believes that white laboring masses should never be subjected to a ruinous competition with the almost countless hordes of cheap and needy neg-ro lahorere which the sudden and general emancipation of the slaves, or a dissolution of the Union would speed ily and certainly bring upon no Looking to the interests of the white race mainly this is our view of the present condition of things that the white race party can nese.r overlook or disre gard. Could till the slaves in the South he at once emancipated upon sonic safe plan, and los moved to a separate home and country, and thole places be supplied with white labor, nn tiortheru Democrat could fail to rejoice at the event. But until some practicel plan et' emancipation, safe for both races, is devised, the Democracy choose to consider mainly the interests of the twenty four millions of the white race. Such then is the division of labor between the Democracy and the sham Republicans , . The lat ter labor solely and frantically for the negroes; and all their labors ate utterly in vain. The Democratic party advocates and sustains all the beet interests of the white rare It is this fa.d that induced ex•l'resident Van Buren in speak ing of the Iteznocratic party in his recent letter, to ray I think I venture todliintr in saying, that of all the political parties which have ari-en in this or any other country, there has not Leen another in the tormation and history of whit there have been such exelutive regard and dev.,- tion to the maintenance of }lnman rights and the _happiness and welfare of the masses of the people." The Democratic party accepts the task Hod the division of labor which the Fremonters lease to it. And during the half century in which ear party has administered the goverment nearly all the time the great mass of the people have pros pered as they never did in any other nation of the world. And ouch will continue the (-rose while Democratic policy prevails But if the party that takes charge of the uegroes gets into power, what thin Then the negroes are to he elevated to entire equality with the white race socially and politically The Union is to he dis solved or slavery abolished The slaves will p..ur into the northern States by thousands and tent , of thousando, poor and needy, and must have work at any price or starve. Such Li cum petit ion white laborers never felt before. It is the labor ing masses who will feel it and it is they , ou whom the negro party rely to aid them in bring ing about this very result Such will be one of the fruits of this negru worshipping Forty's success. Will the great togas of the free white working men of the northern States help them in such an undertaking". (In will they sustain the party that takes care of the interests of the white men' The Democratic party is the party of the white race. The Republican " party is the party of the negro race. Let the free white masses of northern moo choose between them lion. Rufus Choate,. This gentleman has written a letter to an old Woe Whig mass convention, held in Waterville, Maine, in which he announces his intention to vote for James Buchanan, who "by the concur rence of circumstances, more completely then any ether, represents the sentiment of nationali ty." We could have anticipated so noble a con. elusion from a man who refuses to march under any other flag and keep step to any other music than that of the Union. lie was the firm friend of Daniel Webster, and we believe the sage of Marshfield himself, were he alive, would be on the side of the Democracy in its present contest with the distuaionists. Why, gentlemen, if eating ful explorer—aided by Kit Carson—of the Rocky a Mountains, but is entirely unfit to be President animal flesh qualifies a man for the Presidency, my claims are superior to his, for I have eaten of the United States of America. the flesh of noble, hold and free animals. This is not all, gentlemen. 1 have been a martyr to Col. Fremont's celebrated Rocky Mountain Path, one of the greatest humbugs out. The only thing I can refer you to in this region of country as a comparison, is Thaddeus Stevens' great Gettysburg tape worm, whirl, probably you have seen, and on which I once had the misfortune to travel. I walked six miles upon it, and when I came to look around found that I was just within a half mile of where 1 started from. Well, just such a thing is Fre mont's Rocky Mountain Path, only it is upon a grander scale. It would swallow Stevens' tape worm without unfolding acoil or makings squirm Well, as I observed before, I was a martyr to this path, or a great part of it at least. In the year 1849 a party of us left the good old Smoky City and started to cross the Rocky Mountains to the far wilds of California. We unfortunately in leaving the frontier tooa Fre moues celebrated romantic Rocky Mountain path, and after following it for some hundreds of miles came to the conclusion that we were getting back to the point we had started from. We finally decided to abandon his path in disgust. We then took a blind path, which the Mormons had made, which took us direct to California. I should here beg leave to inform you, gentlemen, that there are better Topographical Engineers among the poor degraded Mormons than ever Col. Fre mont was ; and they have certainly thrown his ro mantic path into the shade. When we arrived ni California we found men there who had started from the frontier at the same time we did, and they had arrived in California a month before us ; but fortunately for them they had not taken Fremont's path. After we had been in California about three mouths, there were men arrived who had started from the frontier within six days of the time we did ; but unfortunately for them they had followed Fremont's path throughout, and it took them nearly two months longer to make the trip. They had to eat horse flesh, too, on the route, and the way these men cursed Fre mont and his romantic path was a caution Well, gentlemen, this path is a perfect piece of aumbuggery from the beginning to the end. I consider it a fraud upon the government ; yet this is one of his great exploits which has qualified him in the estimation of his abolition friends for the Presidency! How ridiculous. Why, almost any adventurer has just as good claims as he. I won beg leave to recommend to his abolition friends to be prepared and to shoulder their Sharpe's rifles on the fifth day of November next, and get Col. Fremont to lead them over his romantic path to California, and if they should live to get there, if then they do not curse him and quit him, then this old Indian will knock under. Well, gentlemen, I will not intrude upon your time further at present or else my letter may become as tiresome to you as Fremont's path was to me. I may be induced hereafter to give you something further relative to Col Ft [pones great public exploits after lie had got through with his tapeworm or rain's born path There are sonic of his deeds to come to light vet that are fully as black and dark is the African principles. There is one thin. gentlemen, I want you to bear in remembrance; that is, that I intend to put in my claims, at the next eleetten for the Presideuey, or some higher °nice , and I think if they only give thus old Indian a fair shake, that his chance is equally as good, if nut a little better, than John C Fremont's. The Weekly Post has at no former period in its history been so ably conducted and held in such universal favor F 1 I at present in this section of country. It is acknowledged by the enemies of Democracy as the fair and honest exponent of Democratic principles, and so long as this upright and un yielding course is pursued, it cannot fail to main tain its present high and extolled position. Yours, A SUBSCRIBER." A ittsca REPUBLICAN Tame —Oa Thursday week the Democracy of Williamsport, in Lyco ming county, were promised an address on the following Monday from Ron. C. R Bucklew and R. W. Weaver, Esq., of Columbia county; where upon upwards of one hundred posters were im mediately put out ; but before Monday morning " the Black Republican rascals " had torn every one of them down ! On Monday morning another lot were posted, and they too would have shared a similar fate had not one of the miscreants been caught and made an example of. This is a sample of the tricks of the opposition. CILANGED ITS Catoits.—The Mercer County Nepubtican some time ago hoisted the names of Fremont and Dayton, but so groat was the feeling of opposition among its supporters. that we are informed it has recently taken down these wor thies and put in their stead the names of Fill more and Donelson. Our informant further says the feeling among our opponents in Mercer has greatly increased of late in favor the ex- President, at the expense of the ex-Lieutenant- Colonel. The true Americans" seem deter mined to stand by Millard Fillmore. THE I'OLP. RAISED.—The hickory pole was raised in good style on Saturday! evening on the bank of the river. There wash large and en thusiastic crowd present, and they were well pleased with the speakers. U to the time we left Porter R. Sawyer and Alexander McKinney, Esq , of Greensburgh, had splAen. A good many other speakers were prtisent, and were doubtless heard. It was an expellent meeting, highly encouraging to the unterrifted Democracy H k LOVES A LlE.—The . Gazette yesterday was occupied with that hundred times refuted slander about " ten cents a day." The extracts it pub lished from Mr. Buchanan's speech themselves prove the expression a lie. But satisfied as we are that not one sensible man believes the slander we leave it. Hut let it be remembered that if our opponents will cleave to so manifest a lie as that, they will tell auy other they happen to think of. MURDEROUS AFFRAY AND SUICIDE.—An af fray occurred at Lyons, near the "Sag," in Illi nois, on the 9th inst., between Archibald St. McLay and John Deulay, in which the latter, was stabbed five or six times so dangerously that it is feared he will die. McLay was lodgcd in jail and during the night committed suicide by hanging himself. He had been laboring molt r delirium tremens. THAUEDY OFF THE STAGE.—An actor very wel known as Mr. Edward Morton, made an attempt on Friday night last to kill Ben. Deßar. The exact nature of the difficulty between them we are not advised of, but learn that Morton had taken offence at some alleged failure of Deßar to fulfil his promises, whereby Morton was subordinated in the cast of characters and in the street posters. Morton bad doubtless been nursing his wrath for a long time, and on the night mentioned was standing in a doorway waiting for his enemy. As Deßar passed Le jumped out at him, and endeavored to stab him with a bowie knife ; Deßar's alertness and skill at fencing saved his life. He knocked off the blow with his cane, and then grappled Morton until a policeman came. Morton was placed under bonds to keep the peace, and required to give bail iu $5OO for his appearance to answer to a charge of assault with intent to kill.—Si. Louis Democrat. (ILD-LINE WHIG!!
