A PENNSYLVANIA PRESIDENT
Since the adoption of the Federal Constitution
we have had fourteen Presidents of the United
States. They are as follows : Washington, 8
years; J. Adams, 4 years; Jefferson, & years;
Madison, 8 years; Monroe, 8 years; J. Q Ad
ams, 4 years ; Jackson, 8 years ; -Van Buren, 4
years ; Harrison, I month ; Tyler, years and
11 months ;Polk. 4 years : Taylor, 1 year; Fill
more, 3 years; and Pierce, whose term expires
on the 4th of March next, 4 years ; making in all
68 years. Washington's first term commenced
in 1789. For 49 years of that time. Southern
Presidents have filled the executive chair of the
nation, and Northern Presidents only 195esr!,
counting up the end of the present term.
Pennsylvania was one of the largest and roost
patriotic of the "old thirteen" colonies that
fought the battles of the revolution. She was
one of the first to adopt the Federal Constitution.
She has been one of the most firm and steadfast
supporters of the Union and the Constitution.
She is now the second State of the Union in pop
ulation, wealth and political importance. She
occupies a commandingposition among the States
—the Keystone, in fact, of the Federal Arch.
Yet since the existence of the government Penn
sylvania has never had a President.
How shall this be accounted for? Will Penn
sylvanians admit that our State has produced no
men of sufficient ability to fill the high office?
Is our State unworthy of the honor! No Penn
sylvanian will admit either of these reasons.
Are we of the old Keystone State totally wanting
in that just and commendable State pride that
distinguishes the people of all other States, and
even of the despotic nations of Europe Every
Frenchman is proud of Ffance, and is jealous of
its honor and rights. Every Englishman boasts
of the glory of England. Germans, Scotchmen
and Irishmen retain a lasting affection for their
native lands, and delight to recount the deeds of
their heroes and statesmen. Virginia points to
her illustrious Presidents with just pride, and
Massachusetts boasts of her Aadamses, Webßiers
and Quinceys. Every State is proud of its dis
tinguished men, its generals and statesmen. Put
old Pennsylvania—where is she'. Only one of
her sons has ever reached so high a position as
that of Vice President.
For once, at length, in the history of our re
public, in the 80th year of our Independence,
Pennsylvania has presented a statesman whom
the whole nation admits is every way qualified
to fill, with honor to himself and safety to the
nation, the presidential chair. Both at home
and abroad he is respected and esteemed for his
great ability, his ripe experience, his long and
distinguished public services, and for every
quality that can make a statesman or adorn a
man. Even his enemies can find naught agair, , t
his private character or his public act, that
harm him in the esteem of any rational MEW
No fault can be found with him, except tiiai he
is a national man in his principles, an.] e .
solved that, "sink or swim, live or die, survive
or perish," he will stand F.y the Union and the
Constitution, and all the best interests of bin
whole country. Such is the wan our State hes
presented for the tit st time for the highest honor
in the nation's gift, and the nattun Ilse sccepted
him, and has acknowledged his eminent fitness
and the just and long deferred claims of Penn
sylvania. His nomination has been responded
to with enthusiasm by all national rote all over
the land. One would suppose that all Penn.yl
vanians would rejoice at this proferred honor,
and respond to the general greeting with slii;ost
unanimous accord. There is now a chance for
history to record in the long roll of our Presi•
dents the name of one Pennsylvanian, even in
the first century of our national existence. And
so we trust it will be.
But strange to say, there is no State in the
Union in which such desperate and embittered
exertions are now made to deprive our State of
this honer, and strike down her distinguished
son. And fur what' To elevate in his stead an
untried, inexperienced a - a of South Carolina.
Fremont was born and reared in that State, and
in his roving life has scarce acquired a perma
nent residence in any other. The South has had
the Presidency forty-nine year.i out of sixty
seven, yet the fanatic abolitionists of Pennsylva
nia, while cursing and reviling the whole South,
and South Carolina especially, would take the
honor from their own State and give it for four
years more to a Southern man, and a son of
South Carolina. In our esteem the South and
the North are equal ; but neither section has a,
right to the Presidency four-fifths of the time;
and to the exclusion especially of Petmsylsania:-

Our opponents endeavor to represent tile

it know that there is nothing objectionable in it .
If nothing worse than that can be charged
against Mr. Buchanan, he will escape unhartned
and be triumphantly elected .
To show what Josiah Randall thinks of it, we
publish the following extract from ono of his
speeches lie is an old line Whig, an excellent
lawyer and a sound man, and he says :
The friends of Mr. Fillmore bare assailed Mr. Bu
chanan for his Ostend communication without admit
ting or denying the soundness of the doctrine therein
contained. I would remark that the correspondence
of Mr. Everett, as Secretary of State under Mr.
Fillmore, after the death of Mr. Webster, relative to
Cuba, is more offensive, and ought to be more ob
noxious to the criticism of conservative men than
t'b Ostend letter; and it should be remembered that
the diplomatic manifesto of Mr. Everett was ',sued
under the immediate supervision of Mr. Fillmore
and his Cabinet
Mr. Everett is probably the best educated states
man now living, he is an erudite scholar and a sound
patriot. one thing is certain, any opinion upon
ln

respect. Mr. Buchanan has been in public life up

which his own State could confer upon him. Ile has
occupied tbo highest seat in the Cabinet during e
most eventful epoch; and he has twice repretelited
his country at the courts of the two first nations in
Europe. His private character stands wsthout blot
or btemiam and beyond rebuke or reproach . and it
is a high euloginm upon his public life that the
" Cooeled Lever" is the only act which is designated
by his opponents as the ground of attack.
The Reading Free Press, a Fillmore paper, iu

that mutt open the e 3 et of the Fremont men as
to the utter hopelessness of getting the ex,-

The hours of meeting were fixed for the Wards

the primary elections, that they may represent
the united voice of the Democracy and not mere

Democrats, to attend the meetings for the nomi
nation of candidates, as it is to deposit your vote
at the election in October. Turn out then and
see that men truly representing you are sent to
the Convention.
ALL Foa frOCHAIUN.—Hon. James Monroe,
nephew of the ex-President, and for some years
a Whig M. C. from New York, can't go for Fre

member of Gen. Harrioon's cabinet supports F-e

cold-blooded villainy.

that our estimate of the number at the Sixth

low. We are assured that not less than 2500
were present. It was a glorious meeting, any

ASHLAND, SeDL 2, 11343
Mr Dean Sin :—Allow me to suggest a subject
for one of your tracts, which treated in your popular
and condensed way, I think would be attended with
great and good effect. I mean Abolition.
It is manliest that the ultras of that party are ex
tremely mischievous,' and are hurrying on the coun
try to fearful consequences. They are not to be con
ciliated by the Whigs. Engrossed with a single idea
they care for nothing else. They would ace the ad
ministration of the government precipitate the nation
into absolute ruin, before they would lend a helping
hand to arrest its career. They treat worst, and de-
nounco most, those who treat them best, who so fax
agree with them as to admit slavery to be an evil.
Witness their conduct towards Mr. Briggs and Mr.
Adams, to Massachusetts, and towards me.
I will give you an outline of the manner in which
I would handle it Show the origin of slavery.

lead to a dim/Moo—perpetuate war—the extinction
of the African race—ultimate military despotism.

be, to arouse the laboring classes in the free Smte.-.,

the hest possible reasons for some time to believe
that the stories about Col—Premont's wealth
were wholly fictitious, - without the slightest pos

far the'Presidency was based upon his worth—
the money he was worth. This was his only
qualification, and that turns oakby his own show

respectable exchanges, which hears all the indi
cations of truth:—
!. From a reference to the official returns in
the Seventeenth Ward of New York city, whflre
Col. Fremont resides, it seems that on the 24th
day of June last, that gentlemen, being assessed
for personal property at one hundred thousand
dollars, appeared before the Tax Commissioner,
and swore off the whole amount, making affida
vit that he had no personal taxable property at
all. He swore, in fact over and above his liabili
ties, he was not worth one single cent of personal
property "
So fades the mist into thin air and is lost to
sight. A malionaire, but not worth a dollar' It
he is not worth money, will some one tell us R hel
he is worth? The inquiry seems pertinent, if lie
has not a dollar 'of taxable property over and
above his liabilities, what has he done with the
money his herds of beef cattle sold for in Cali
fornia ? What disposition has he made of the
funds which he received from Congress? Has
he squandered it all ?
We are authorized to bet two thouwont five

are furthermore authorized to increase the het to
