An Immense Democratic Ward Meeting.—An im
mense mass meeting—perhaps the largest Ward
nu sting ever held in Pittsburgh—was that in the
Fifth Ward, on Saturday evening, to which we al
luded briefly yesterday. The occasion was a pole
raising en the corner of Pike and Factory streets.
There were from 2500 to 3000 persons present at the
lowest estimate, and the enthusiasm for our glorious
nominees unbounded. The meeting was organised
by selecting the following officers :
President—Dß. DANIEL CORNMAN.
Vice Presidents—Jag. RAnriroa, FRANCIS DUNK,
WD-WILSON, JOHN HELDMAN, FRANCIS FELIX, JOHN
-MARKS and A. SCOTT.
Secretaries—John A. Parkinson, and Pr. DIMWIT
Tho speech of Colonel R. B. Cerpenter, of Chicago,
formerly of Kentucky—where he distinguished him
self in the prosecution of Matt. Ward, who murdered
the schoolmaster Butler—is spoken of as particularly
fine. We hope Col. C. may do more service in the
Keystone before leaving. His shots will tell in the
enemy's ranks.
Capt. Robert Porter also epoke with effeot, after
Which the Pittsburgh Glee Club enlivened the meet
ing with a number of spirited songs.
Ctowhiding a Oypritrn.—A scene of rather a dis
graceful character was enacted on Saturday night,
the locality being a house of ill fame on Second
street, kept by a woman named Leslie. It appears
that an inmate of the establishment, a Miss Sarah D.
Wilkins, had quarrelled with another female, whose
name 'has not transpired, in which Sarah, nhu is
large and athletic, chastised her in a most summary
manner. A young man became the fair one's Dun
Quixotte, and procuring a cowhide, repaired to the
seebo where ho proceeded to indict corporal punish
ment in the most approved form. Her shoulders
exhibited unmistakable proofs of the severity of the
punishment. A warrant was ii,nied by Aid. Mc-
Masters; but up to last evening n, arrest had teen
made.
Barn Burned ty a Stroke of Lightniny.—We learn
from the Fayette county papers, that on Wednesday
week the barn of Mr. Joseph Here, of bunhar town
ship, was struck by lightning, from which it to:A
fire and was entirely consumed, together with its
contents. Although the fire was discovered immedi
ately, so rapid was its progress that it was with di®•
unity the horses were got out of the stable , but their
safety was not complete, as the most valuable one
bed been struck dead ley the lightning. Mr. Hare
lost one hundred and fifty bushels of old wheat, in
addition to his present crop of grain and hay. His
lose Is estimated at about $2,500, on which there
was no insurance

Old Cumberland Church in Temperanoeville, on Sat
urday night. After blowing horns, ringing bolls,
waving flage and burning tar barrels, fifty persons
assembled—including Democrats and youths under
twenty-one. A resolution was passed resolving that
all Fremont men do put down their names in a blank
book, which was exhibited for the purpose, and Crum
ten to twelve names were obtained in lose than one
hour: Well done for Toutperance
Mea Hotel.—Thts elegant house is now le the pro
priCtership of Mr. Jo...epla F. D. Keating, a tru-,4
hospitable and gentlemanly landlord, who is well
known as an old resident of Pittsburgh. The 1.1160

beautiful grounds and shade trees in front, and a moat
inviting lawn and grove ie OS rear. wings, arbors
and springs bare been supplied by nature and
art. The Hotel is about five miles from town, not
far from Braddock's field, and needs only to be known
to be extensively patronized, not only by our citizens.
but also by visitor., from a distance.

the allied Powers of Europe, recently held at Paris,
respecting the abolition of privateering, and the doc

Mr. Mason said it was somewhat remarkable that
these powers should have presented these proposi

of distributing to public libraries and colleges the
documents printed fur that purpose; also, to author

relative to the tweutiol, of Col. Fremont, was adop
