Charge of Stealing against a Young Lady.—A
charge of stealing was preferred on Saturday before
Ald. Wilson, against Miss Mary Bird, a young wo
man who had for three weeks past been boarding at
the House of Thomas Hunt, in the Fifth ward. Some
time ago Miss Mary came to Mr. Hunt's, alleging
that she expected her father here shortly, who she
said was engaged in the banking business in Western
Virginia, and who, she furthermore stated, had re
commended her to put up there, as It was the place
be put up at when in this city. When she first ar
rived she bad informed some of the female portion
of the house that she wan without funds. After
waiting a couple of weeks, the proprietor asked her
if she had had a letter from her father. She replied
no; but that if he wanted his beard money, she was
prepared to settle, and did so without ceremony.
"This was in itself a suspicious circumstance," as
counsellor Boston remarked in the case of Barden
vs. Pickwick, particularly as about this time another
sojourner at Mr. Hunt's, an Englishman named John
Maton, had lost thirty dollars in gold. The money
taken had been exchanged, bat on tracing it out It
answered the lost coin exactly, viz:. one golden
eagle and one ditto double eagle. A warrant was
accordingly issued for her arrest, but the Bird had
flown in the direction of Lawrenceville, and up to
lastevening had not been caught.

Appeal.—The attention of the Court of Quarter
Session was, on Saturday, called to the appeals from
the Board of Licensers. Mr. Basbrouk desired the
court to appoint a day as soon as possible for hearing
the appeals. The Court was inclined to the opinion
that the appeals would have to lay over until the
next term as appeals from Justices of the Peace Jci
civil suits. Mr. H. thought the act of Assembly re
quired a more speedy determination of them. Some

about a horse, of an uncertain age, which resulted
in a row. In the first place, John Schreiber, the
keeper of an inn in the Fifth ward, sued John Rrie
koff for surety of the peace; secondly, George sued
John Schreiber and one Casper Rubold for assault
and battery; thirdly, a man named Henry Rosen
baum sued George for surety of the peace; and
fourthly and finally, Mrs. Gertrude Schreiber sued
- Mat for an assault and battery. It all occurred in
Schreiber's bar room. We believe the age of the
horse has not yet been determined.
Jfarri.d.—Michael Liston to Elizabeth Fitzgib
bon, on Saturday last, by Ald. Major. Michael had
appeared before the Alderman to answer a charge of
rape made by Elizabeth. On meeting the accused
she persisted in her allegation, at the same time say
ing that all she asked of Mike was that "he would
make an honest woman of her," which she thought
might be done by a little matrimony. Mike agreed
to do what he could for her, and after a few words
by the Alderman, wiping out old scores, the partie,
left, the one no doubt with as honest intentions as
the other.
litoband and Mfr.—Mary Schwambly was rom- I
mitted on Friday last, charged with the larceny of
$4B and some cents, the property of Martin Weaver.
The prosecutor alleges that the money was Stolen
from him while a lodger at the inn of the defendant.
One James Ramsay, who was a companion of Martin
Weaver, made information against Philip Schwam
bly for selling liquor without license. Philip was
accordingly committed to the care of oee Phillips, an
attentive and humane man, who lives in a strung
house on the hill, where he has the pleasure of see
ing many a-far off.
Sence the above we learn that the snakes chased
Philip out of his boots, and that be died in his cell
on Saturday evening, in a whisky fit.
Well done fur a Thief.—While amen was purchas
ing a ticket at the circus on Friday night, a pick
pocket stole bis pocket book containig $ll,OO, and
then ran. He was pursued by an officer to the river
bank, where dreading arrest he plunged in and made
good his escape to the other side.
Enoch Howell was arrested on Friday night, and
committed on charge of keeping a bawdy house, on
oath of W. Hodkinson. Angelina McClure, also,
lodged a complaint against Enoch for an assault and
battery. On either charge Enoch may be translated
for a season.

this institution a youth of fifteen, on Saturday,
whose vicious habits were such as to make him a tit

Some months since, while recovering from nu attack of re

THOS. BELL,

C vet.. RoutNiox has again laid the public under °till
knit ions to him, by producing one of the prettiest steamer•_
that ever appeared at our landing. The hull is from C.
Graham & Co.', limit yard, Fri don,, and is pronounced by
competent judges the hull of the seamen ;—length 156 feet,
loam 3*.1% feet, hold 414 feet. Machinery by Robinson,
Minis & Milers—cylinders 16 in, 4 ft. stroke; two boilers,
88 In. diameter, 26 ft. long. The cabin, one of Charley
Ooehrlng's best—nuf ced. Painting by H. Murphy; car.
184 s, M'Callulll A BrO4 upholstery, Eduiundson& Co; outfit,

Koller; furniture, T. B. Young & Co., boll and brass work,
A. Fulton; blocks and tackle, Davage & Roberts; plumbing,
Williams & Allen; medicine chest, J. Fleming.
The 'Commerce" is fitted out in everything the law re
quires, and all that the experience of years could suggest fur
the safety and comfort of passengers. We might mention
here, fur the benefit of our fair friends, that the ladles`
cabin is famished with Empress Eugenie rocking chairs, to
suit the present 4.1y1e of dress, which proves at once that Capt.
Robinson is a ladies' man, au font.
Of Capt. Robinson personally it is unneeesseary for us to
say a word; but we might mention, that from a lung and
intimate acquaintance, dating almost back to the Pumpkin
Flood, wo have over found him a gentleman, in every sense
of the word. In the clerk's office will be found our Iriend
Harry Mason, a model of virtue and goodness.
WE clip the following from the Cincinnati papers of
day last:
Nothing of interest to record in relation to the river un
