Je24 BORT. 0. WALKER, Secretary Arrest of Bonk O f ficers.—We learn from the Chi cago Times of the 6th inst., that a couple of beau ties named Parker and Nazareth, came to the Sher man House in that city, a few days before, and opened, in room No. 98, a Bank. The circulating medium was white and red checks valued at fifty cents and five dollars. The two worthies got along swimmingly for a day or two, and were skinning the verdant ones to some purpose, until a Mr. Hatch, from Buffalo, who it appears is " some sharp," paid them a visit. Immediately after Hatch went into the room the second time, several knights of the star entered also, and took possession of all the traps, together with the bodies of the three individuals aforesaid. After enjoying a snooze on sawdust, in the watch house, the fancy gentry were brought be fore the Court for trial. The Times gives the fol lowing in regard to the matter: Nazareth cross-examined the witness, as follows : Q. Sir, what is your name ? A. I have already stated. Q. Well, sir, where do you live ? A. I have also told you that. Q. What is your occupation? A. It is very difficult to tell. I attend to my own business generally, fish and shoot some, deal in land and educate my boys. Q. Do you stop at hotels when you travel? A. Not when I travel, but when I stop. Q. Do you frequent gambling houses ? A. I went twice to yours. Q. When did you first meet with me? A. I think the first time I saw you was in that room at the Sherman House. Q. Did you ever gamble with me? A. You hare no right to ask me that question. Q. Did you ever see me gambling with other persons? A. I have already answered. (4. What amount did you see me win? A. I did not count IL Mr. John Nazareth found that he was not likely to make much by pursuing his cross-examination, and therefore put no more questions. The Court. after delivering a homily upon the sin of gambling. which was thrown away upon those for whose good it was doubtless intended, fined the defendants $5O each, whiob was immediately forked over. Charles Depue, whom our readers will remember an information was made against by Mary Griffith, about three weeks ago, before Ald. Parkinson, was yesterddy picked up by officer Hobaugh and taken to the Grant Street House, a hotel that always has a large number of transient, and nut a few regular boarders, where he will likely see a limited number of friends, until Court week, when, in all probability, he will have an opportunity to gain a correct knowl edge of the shoemaking business, under the direction of Major Beckham. Mary alleges that Charles did have a mock marriage performed, that he stole her gold watch, spent her money, and that when she re monstrated with bin, in reference to his conduct, he threatened to take he? life. The gay deceiver had been taking a pleasure trip to Zanesville, and had just returned, when the vigilant Hobaugh, ever on the watch for rogues, took him by the &Mar. Voting en the Curs.—We have very little faith in the " straws" which are paraded before the public we indicating the quarter from which the political wind blows ; but the only two trains we traveled up. on on the Central Railroad on which ballots were taken as to the preferences of the passengers for the presidency, resulted so differently from the reports published in the Republican papers. that we cannot resist making them public It will be seen that Fillmore is considerably ahead of Fremont, and that Buchanan is about equal t. the two combined. So it will be—only a little in,re so—next November. A celebrated rogue, who has been carrying on un der the name of George F. Frank, but whose real name is said to be L. B. Chnworth, was arrested Thursday last by Fox, and committed to jail on a charge of false pretences made by a man named Mc- Ginnis. Chaworth bears anything but an enviable reputation, and has rendered himself notorious for horse stealing, counterfeiting, rubbery, itc. Ile is in safe keeping now, however, and will have ample time for reflection. It is said he lately made his escape from the Elmira, N. Y., jail, where be was confined for horse stea_ing. He has also been doing a land office business in stealing in Westmoreland, Blair, Indiana and Cambria counties in this State. We should not wonder if he would soon come tu the 'conclusion that "honesty is the be.t. policy." Three gentlemen residing in Allegheny city, naturil 7. Hancock, John Wright and Jame 3 Patton. J r., one •day this week started on a hunting excursion to Butler county. Shortly after their arrival on the ground, while Mr. Wright was about firing his gun at a pheasant, the cu<•k of the piece caught upon a little oak tree, and the load was diechargetl, hitting Mr. Hancock, who was a few feet distant, on the head, wounding him very severely and daugervi,ly The party arrived at their homes on Thursday last and Mr. Fl. now lies in a very critical situation The sad affair was purely accidental, no blame at .taching to any one. The night watch were called when the whole party were taken into custody, and yesterday morning Mayer Bingham fined each of them $5 and costs. This kind of amusement don't pay, particularly in a city where .there is a vigilant police. We direct the attention: of our readers to the ca d of Messrs. Drum ,t Stauard, attorneys at law, (for merly of Indiana,; in this morning's paper. Mr. D. was formerly a member of our State Senate, and rep resented the district composed of Westmoreland, In diana and Armstrong counties, in Congress, and was beaten, when a candidate for re-election, by the Know Nothings. Ile enjoys the reputation of being a sound lawyer and successful advocate; while Mr. S. Is a young man of fine abilities, who, we have rea son to. believe, will mai% his mark in his new home. Trouble Amoug tke Fair.—Martha McCorkle had a difficulty with Mrs. Elisabeth Leslie and her daughter Mary, which ended as is generally the case in threats not loud but deep. Martha accordingly sues out a warrant, and had Mrs. L. arrested for de claring she would burn down her local habitation, in which she was to be assisted by her daughter Mary. Mrs. Leslie was arrested and held in $2OO bail to answer—the daughter has not yet been taken iuto custody. a_ Birmingham is getting to be quite a place for fight ing, /c.c. A rather serious row came off at Young's tavern, in 1a village, on Thursday night last, in which el.x or eight buffers participated. We under stand the lights were put out and that tumblers cir culated freely. o ' ."•- Last evening ato'clock, fire was dlicov. For a few moments, _ looked bad enough, but the indomitable ex ertions of the noble firemen, soon checked the de vouring element, and confined its ravages to the sta ble. The firemen deserve great praise for saving the property of their neighbors, at the risk of their lives. The loss did not amount to much. The fire was no doubt the work of an incendiary. Democratic Pole Raising in the Fifth Wani.—A hickory pole will be raised this evening at the cor ner of Factory and Pike greets, at h' o'clock. All friends of Buck, Breck, and the Constitution are re spectfully invited to participate in the exercises. Speeches will be made by lion. P. C. Shannon, E. P. Junes, Esq., and other distinguished orators. A good time may be expected. The gentlent•tril y proprietor of the Grant SErert House, has now one hundred and fourteen boarders, twenty-eight of whom are females. Every thing about the building is neat and clean, and the only complaint on the part of the guests is that they have no favorable opportunity for taking exercise in the open air. There is considerable sickness and a great many deaths occurring among the children of the city at present, caused to a great extent, no doubt, by ex travagant indulgence in the green truck iu which the market abounds. Parents should watch thtir little fellows and see that they du not injure them selves. Joshua Dennis, a gentleman of color, who was re cently sentenced to four years imprisonment in the Western Penitentiary, for treating one of his ac quaintances to several inches of a knife blade, was deposited in that institution on Thursday last. Joshua comes from Altoona, Blair county. August 7th—Senate.—Mr. Stewart replied to Mr. Seward's speech, which he termed ex traordinary. Seward was evidently responsible for the present troubles in Kansas, and his present ar gument seemed as if intended to encourage the House in factious opposition to the Senate and Pres ident Mr. Foote desired some convenient opportunity to address the Senate on Kansas matters; but as it was now late, he was reluctant to detain that body to-night, but would like to have that opportunity on Saturday. Mr. Thompson, of Ky., also wished to make a po litical speech on the same day,•if ho had time after the others finished. . . Messrs. Durkee, Foote, Foster, Harlan, Seward, Trumbull, Wade, Wilson and Weller, gave notice that they would call up the Pacific railroad bill on to-morrow. I=ilß Wasutirorus, July a— Senute —The Senate begins to work up, and passed the bill from the House grant ing one and a half millions acres of land to the State of Mississippi for railroad purposes. House.—Mr. Washburn, of Maine, reported a re solution authorizing the payment to Mr. Reeder of per diem mileage, from the time his claims to a seat as delegate from Kansas was decided. The resolution was adopted by 23 majority. North Carolina Election RALEIGH, N. C. August o.—The vote at Raleigh for Governor is as follows: Gilmer, K. N., 357; Bragg, Dem., 203—showing a gain for Bragg of 54. For the Legislature, Ragas, K. N., has 170 majority. In Wake county, with all but 8 precincts heard from, and allowing these as before, there is a clear Demo cracic gain of 100. The whole Democratic ticket is elected by an increased majority, and giving a De mocratic gain of 1 in the Legislature. Scanty re turns from the lower counties favor Bragg, who is doubtless re-elected Governor. RALEIOII, N. C.. August 8.--The counties.of Wake, Johnston, Orange, Alamance, Guilford, Rowan and Davidson, have been heard from. The returns show large Democratic gains in all the counties except Guilford, while Gilmer, the K. N. candidate for Gov ernur, gains about 400. In the above counties there is a Democratic gain of five members of the Legis lature. Paul C. Cameron has been elected to the State Senate in Orange county, which is also a De mocratic gain. WEbeiNcroN, N. C.. August C.—Hanover gives a maloritv of bSil for Bragg, which is a large Demo cratic gain. In Columbus, Bragg has a majority 270, which is also a large Democratic gain. Bruns. wick has been carried by the Americans, showing a gain for Gilmer of -0. C=l Rat Pilau, August S.—The Democratic gaiu ID New Hanover, Columbus and Brunswick, is 224.
