THE
SIXTH ANNUAL EXHIBITION
i)F THE
PENNSYLVANIA
STATE AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY,
WILL BE HELD
AT PITTSBURGI
On SEPTEMBER 30th, and on
OCTOBER lot, 24 and' 3d, 1550.
je24 ROBT. 0. WALKER, Secretary.
The Iron Horse.—When Fulton, about the year
1800, talked of propelling a boat by steam, the wise
people of that day thought the man craty. The na- I
fives, however, opened their eyes when he did make
a trip by that agency, from New York to Albany.
Sines that day many improvements have been made
in the manner of transmitting passengers, news and
freight. We hear each day, the proceedings in Con
gress, that used to be a week old, by means of the
telegraph. If Brooks resigns his seat in Congress,
because be chastised a larger man than himself, and
returns to his home in South Carolina, we hear, in a
very few hours of his re-election. A few years ago
we did not got news by lightening, neither did the
iron horse, snort, puff and tear through all our val
leys, and over all our hills. Now he dues. So much
for this age of improvement. Only a few •days ago,
if amen wanted to go to Chicago from Pittsburgh,
he bad to travel over three or four different roads.
Now be can perform the same journey on one road,
which is managed by one President and one board
of Directors.
The Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Road, is
now the " finish - in railroad enterprise, when speak
ing of going Wost. G. W. Cass, Esq., is the Presi
dent of it, assisted by a large number of worthy offi
cers, among whom we must mention Mr. 11 , nisten,
the general freight agent. It is a grand consumma
tion, and reflects great credit upon all concerned in
bringing it about. We now have one continuous
road from the Pennsylvania workshop to the Garden
City of the great west, managed by gentlemen of
liberal and enlarged views, whose character for in
telligence, industry and business capacity, is a sure
guarantee that the interests of the people will Le
properly cared for.
State Agricultural Society.—Mr. Robert C. Walker,
the Recording Secretary of the State Agricultural
Society, laid upon our desk, yesterday, a list of pre
miums and regulations of the Sixth Annual Exhibi
tion, which is to take place in this city on September
30th, and October Ist, 2d and 3d. Front this paw
ittlek we learn that BeVen thousand dollars in monty
nialdate will be distributed on that occasion, in
preMiums. On page II of the book, the following
item occurs :
No. 28.--Pittsburgh Nlanufactures. A silver
medal will be awarded to each manufacturer for the
best display in his line of basalt's,. Which display.
the Committee must deem worthy.
Articles manufactured in the vicinity. will be con
sidered as Pittsburgh manufactures.
Arrangements for having a splendid exhibition
are now being rapidly perfected, and we expect to
hare ouch a time as will ever be remembered 1,3
Triltsburgher4. An understanding in reference to the
transportation of passengers, stock, le., we are is
formed, will be had nab the different railroad coil,
Family Trouldr. —Edward McD.ine.ld yesterday
made his appearance before Alderman Wilson, end
swore that his wife Ann, did, on the day previuu-,
participate to such an extent in liquids as to become
itoxicatod; that she threatened to kill Lim with a
nife which she carried in her hood, and that be was
really afraid that she would do him great
harm. A warrant was issued and placed in the hands
of Officer Johnston, who called upon Ann, an.l
re
quested the pleasure of her company at
o'clock levee. The lady told Mr. J. she was willru;
to bear him company, but asked his permission f r
a few moments, to adjust her toilet in another room .
This the gallant officer at once grunted, when the
fair pugilist leaped out of a window and made good
her escape. When she gets sober, Edward will ie.
doubt forgot it all and take her t his awe again, as
1f nothing had happened.

Benefit of Mr. Su, yth.—Mr. L. U. Smyth, a young
man possessing a fair share of histrionic ability,
is
to have a benefit at the Athena.= this evening.
The entertainment will commence with the beauti
ful tragedy of '• Venice Preserved," in which Mr. F..
will sustain the character of "Jaffier," and Mr. Del.
even that of " Pierre." There young men deserve
the encouragement of our play•going citizens, and it
affords us pleasure to state that Joe Delaran's ef
fort! are'properly appreciated, he having on Tues
day last been presented by Ms friends with a very
neat sword and an arvordeon. We hope to see Mr.
Smyth succeed as well. Let all " bump" out and
give him a " turner."
-
Th. Pic Sic at Baum's Grove yesterday, was a
very happy party, not the slightest circumstance oc
carting to mar the pleasures of the day. Eight or
ten hundred people, young and 0141, visited the
grounds during the day, and all appeared to enjoy
themselves well. Wejuve to see every cue happy,
and standing yesterday, under a beautiful shade tree,
witnessing the enjoyment of the many there assem
bled, we were highly gratified. The joyous smile
that dwelt upon the countenances of the many inn..
cent and beautiful young ladies there present was
good proof that all was right. For the two hours
we were there we forgot all trouble, and en it ap
peered to us did every one eke.
Pittsburgh nod Cowie/14,111e As will
be been by the advertisement under the appropriate
head, this road will be opened to tiuffey'e station,
forthe transportation of passengers and freight, on
Monday next, the 11th inst., connecting with Hunt
ing coaches for Uniontown, and linfrey's
coaches for Irwin's station. This is a good arrange
tnent, and will, we have no doubt, be well patronized.

THIRTY-POITRTG CONGRESS
FIRST SESSION.
WASHINGTON CITY, August 7.—Settote—On motion
of Mr. Weller, a resolution was adopted calling on '
the President for any correspondence relative to the
refusal of Honduras to receive a commercial agent
from this government.
On motion of Mr. Seward a resolution was adopted
requesting the President to communicate any infor
mation he may have, and hie opinion as to the expe
diency of establishing an American consulate at the
Lenchen Islands.
The Senate took up the Army Approptiation Bill,
which was reported from the Finance Committee,
with amendments striking out Sherman's proviso.
Mr. Hunter said that the proviso was irrelevant,
and if for no other reason it should be rejected, but
fur the House to insert such a proposition, and insist
on it, is to stop the wheels of government. It wee
not only factious, but revolutionary.
Mr. Wilson said that if the bill passed, the respon
sibility will rest on the Senate, and out on the House,
which had made a thorough examination of the af
fairs of Kansas, and ascertained that there had been
a violation of the organic law, and a trampling down
of the rights of the people. The House had acted
with intelligence and patriotism.
Mr. Wade maintained that the iuraders had made
unjust and tyrannical laws, to which no citizen
ought to submit.. Pierce, the rraltur, now sits in the
executive chair, stimulating the peopleZas fast as
he eon do it, to civil war. The object of the House
ameritimont was to prevent outrage in Kansas, and
should meet with the approbation of every pa.rmt.
Mr. Thompson, of liy., opposed, and Mr. Trum
bull advocated the proviso.
Mr. Hunter said if the House insisted on the pro
vise, the bill would be lost in out/sequence, and there
would be a general outbum of indignation through
out the country.
Mr. Butler thought the proposition was the most
unconstitutional that ever found its way into a I. ill.
Inflammatory violence and illegal means were re
sorted to for the purl..e of attaining improper ends,
and it was hastening the country ton crisis sebeli
the South would have to take care of itself.
Mr. Fessenden justified the action of the House,
whi,h had made appr, prialions for all the purpo.e•
of the army, but only restricted the expenditures
Kansas. If the Senate should defeat the bill on tic
count of this, the responsibility would be theirs.
The Senator from South Carolina had not intorined
them bow the exercise of such a right violated the
Constitution.
Mr. Douglas said the proviso withholds money for
the execution of certain law , . The Constitution en
Joins on the President the execution of all the law•.
and Congress cannot interpose to prevent hint front
bt, doing. The proviso likewise grants an amnesty
to men who have murdered their fellow citiren•. Co'
their throats and their hearts out ; but be would
hang them by then necks for their crimes.' If the
Judges ut Kan:Oa are so corrupt that Justice cannot
ho done, as to so frequently asserted, why did Mr.
Wade's friends, who hero a majority nu the llou•e.
impeach them?
Mr. Wade.--. 11 we have n majority there, they were
culpably negligent of duty.
Mr. Douglas -They are culpably negligent or ds
bonnet in their profeemon!.
Mr. ressenden said perhaps the House had not
confidence in the tribunal bi try them.
Mr. Douglas thought that Mr. Fenenden bad
thrown out an insinuation against his follow Sena
tors.
Mr. Feaseriden emphatieally .lenied this. The
Senator from Illinois could not torture his Inn
gauge an to make him ray that the majority of the
Senate wore corrupt.
Mr. Douglas was still of the opinion that it was at,
imputation upon the Senate. •
