People may unconsciously and unintentionally
become parties to a fraudulent operation, and
there is just a possibility that such may be the
case this year. To represent a man as very
wealthy when in fact he is not so is apt to mis
lead, and give the man a credit and an ability to
wrclf_ its neighbors.
It has been represented that John c. F ee mot.t
is extremely wealthy—worth millions in fact--
and yet recent developments would seem to ren•
der that matter very doubtful. For instanc.•.
ex-Governor McDougal, of California, made a
speech in New York lately, in which he said,
among other things, that Fremont's Mariposa
claim was not worth s'•Cto Yet the Courts Lave
pronounced his title to the property good. Ilia
there are other filets to be considered in a Cnil
fornia land claim besides the mere title and pa
per. Fremont bought the Mariposa estate of
Alvarado, in 1t47, for s:i 3 OitU. It contains over
60,000 acres—a part of it gold ore land At
that time, and since, the title he acquired has
been considered valueless. The first Court be
fore which the case was-tried, decided it against,
Fremont. It has been iu litigation ever since.
until quite recently. Nleautime settlers have to

farms and claims under the general expectation
that Fremont's title would be declared void

Fremout's is a far worse case than that ~f the
New York landlords. Ile bought the wh' le
estate for a mere trifle. Ile has never
upon it. He cannot be considered a resident of
California. He lives in New York city.
With these facts in view the remark of Mc-
Dougal can be understood. Ile thinks Fremont's
claim hardly worth $:,00. Fremont has no other
wealth. The gold diggers are exliaii. , ting his
mines, and his lands are in the hand , of those
who intend to keep them, and cannot easily be
driven off.
Now, under such circumstances, whence comes
the money which it is evident is profusely squan
dered to forward his election. Doubtless out
siders furnish some. Doubtless the s6o,otiii
which California had sent to pay the interest on
its bonds has been used. Doubtless the Kansas
Aid funds have been so employed also. But the
main fund after all consists, no doubt, in Jo/n
C. Fremont'2 pr,nt.,ory Wile • . That fact is not

We do not know that the private affairs of an in
dividual should be made a matter or discussion in
the public prints, even although the name of that
individual may have been connected with the I're3i
dential canvass. The fact is, however, that Col. Fre
mont's paper is offered for sale, and that description
of sale may as well be advertised as that of any
other goods. We have seen the note of John c.
Fremont, drawn to his own order, dated March, 1556,
fur $l,BOO, 12 months to run, offered at 13 per cent.
per month—say $1,;:i8-1 for $1,860 ; and we have
heard of many others. The investment may be a
very good one, and possibly the paper will find buy•
eve. The paper was said to have sold at 2 per cent.
per month, but was probably withdrawn. The pa
per. is said to have been offered at 5 per cent. per
month.
Such is the testimony of one of the most able
and reliable commercial papers in this country.
It is also st Lted in New fork papers that when
the protest of California fur nun-payment of in
terest was noised abroad, Fremont was found
upon the streets endeavoring to raise money to
replace the $60,000, and failed to do so. There
is no report of the interest being yet paid. We
submit them, that, in view of recent develop
ments, capitalists who deal in paper should give
the Fremont " promises to pay" a pretty wide
berth. We do not wish to injure holders who
may need the proceeds, but, until the shades

upon Fremont's credit are cleared away, his pa
per should not be very eagerly sought for by
bankers. We shall no longer represent him as
wealthy until informed how he is going to dis
possess a few hundred or thousand settlers and
laborers on Mariposa. That California interest
should be paid, too ; and the " promises to pay"
should be negociated at a lower rate of discount.
There may be trouble yet before November.
Should those notes prove utterly unsaleable,
some—a good many, may begin to think that
instead of being handsomely bought, they are
shabbily ,‘ sold "

So much for Fremont financially : and the
view suggests a remark or two on the aspect of
things politically. Did ever the honest people
of this country know a presidential campaign
that presented such remarkable features ? When
before have the evidences been so palpable that
money in vast sums has been employed in get
ting a nomination and promoting an election
When before have newspapers been so suddenly
and surprisingly converted? When before has
a Massachusetts abolitionist been beard to boast
that Pennsylvania could be and would be bought
fur a million dollars" When before have leading
newspapers dared to hold out such a lure to the
greedy, the needy and the seedy, as the Tribune
and !Herald did, that a great fund would be
raised to secure Fremont's election" And when
before has British influence been boasled of in
behalf of an American candidate" Verily we
have fallen upon strange and startling times.

Dear l'caft suppose you are aware that
this is the day axed for the meeting of the Fill

electoral ticket to represent what is left of the
great American party in Pennsylvania. Well,
it did come off, and most successfully, too
the Sanhedrim did not meet with closed doorsor

a few more of the same sort. I would not pre-

The clamor raised by the friends of Fremont
on account of the alleged violations of the free
dom of debate by Southern men has induced the
Piaui(haler to reproduce from its columns of 1 sc,ti
an incident in the short, Senatorial caroer of Col
Fremont which forcibly illustrates his fitness as
the candidate of the ebriekers for free speech
It is as follows:
I , ,purr. AND FRP.NONT DIVPIDULTY.—The
difficulty between Senators Foote and Fremont grew
t the ei reumstance that Foote charged FreILILWI I,
in the Senate, with seeking legislation in reference
0* the gold mines for the sake of his own private ad
vantage, which Fremont pronounced false. After
wards they met in the ante chamber, when Fremont
struck Foote and brought blood. 'they were imme
diately separated by Senator Clarke. Subsequently
Fremont addressed a note to Foote, demanding a re
traction of the language used by him in debate, to
be signed in the presence of witnesses, and a el.'

THE Louisville C , urfer says of the election in
in Kentucky as follows
THE RESULT IN RENTUCKV.—We have returns
by telegraph from several of the most important
points of the State. They all indicate very large
and decisive gains for the Anti-Know-Nothings.
Indeed, we have no doubt but that the result of
yesterday's election in Kentucky will show a
majority of ten thousand for the Democracy.
The issue of party politics iu this election was
forced upon the Democratic party, and it has
very manfully and triumphantly, met that issue.
This result is but a foretaste of November.
