Some months since, while recovering front an attack of re

condition of convalescents from fever. it is but simploJtue

I have no hesitation in raying that hitherto in using It in my

THIRTY-FOURTH CONGRE.94;
FIRST SESSION..
WASHINGTON, August 2.—Senate not in session
dap.
HMO, —House passed eleven private hills that or
iginated in the Rouse, and six private bills from the
Senate. _House then went into committee on for
tification appropriation bill.
After the bill was amended, on motion of Mr. Stan
ton, it was reported to the Rouse with a recommen
dation to strike out the enacting clause with a view
to its defeat. This was disagreed to by a vote of GO
against 05.
A point was raised that the first business was to
vote on the amendments, including Mr. Benson's, ap
propriating $lOO,OOO for fortifications at the mouth
of Kennebec, river, and $42,000 for the purchase of
additional land at Staten Island, for defensive pur
poses, but the Speaker de,,ided that the only report
ed from the Committee of the Whole was a reenin-
El:laudation to strike out the enacting clauses. All
the amendments were thus cot off, and the vote must
be on the bill as originally reported.
After an ineffectual attempt to table the:bill, it was
passed. It appropiates $58:1,0011; including $75,-
000 fur Fort Richmond : and $25,000 for Fort Mont
gomery.
Mr. Herbert made an unsuccessful effurt to intro •
duce a resolution authorizing the intervention of the
land and naval forces in the affairs at San FranCisco.
The House went into Cram:ultimo on the Bill to de
fray the expenses of the Legislative, Executive and
Judicial departments of government.
Mr. lierbertjaade a personal explanation, saying
that various charges had been made against hint
from both the Pacific and Atlantic coasts. He
branded them as falsehoods ; not ono of his accusers
could compare with him iu point of purity, honor,
and integrity. The charges came from political ene•
lutes, which was cotnpliwentary rather than dis
graceful. The bill was debated till recess at seven
o'olock.
Mr. Lumpkin spoke of the Black Republicans as
being organised on sectional principles. This was
the commencement of revolution for, if successful,
that party would conduct the government in arcont
&nee with the views of a triumphant majority, and
no Southern man could accept Lace under ir. Those
politicians intend to bring about the disruption of the
Union. To the rabid spirit of anti-slavery should be
attributed the existing evils.
Mr. Wade while engaged in his avowed object of
calling men's minds to the bettor and purer days of
the Republic, said if the Constitution is to ho used
merely as an instrument to propagate human bona_
age, it cannot endure, nor wee it desirable it should.
It could not have been possible to construct the Union
on the sentiments declared by the modern sham Black
Democracy, who would substitute for the Constitution
a machine for slavery extension without limit of time
or space.
The House adjourned.

Tux Louisville Glouricr, of Aug 1, forwarded by Adams'
oo.'s Express, contains the following:
The River et this point continues, felling, with Out 27
iodise in the canal, •
CLO9IbII ?al (J UL ,- -TatETHIC- Bameit.—Today the wider
win be drawn off from the canal, which will be closed for
two months, or more, fur the purpose of repairs. A good
deal of work has to be done, and a good many improve
ments fur the benefit of boatmen, - as well as the convenience
of the public, can be made.. . .
One of the greatest evils, and the most dreaded by steam--
boatmen, Is the stone bridge situated midway along the
renal, to connect the barren common; above Shippingport,
with the omit/laud. This In wham a present convenience
to a very few, but an intolerable nuisance to the many, and .
the dread of all steamboatmen, who are liable to have their
chimney/ knocked down every time they attempt to pas+
under. Then again at certain stages of the river she arch'
of the bridge is entirely too low for boats to pass under.
The superintendent, Captain Lockhart, contemplates the
demolishment of the stone bridgelbe first thing. In its
place will be built a pivot bridge, similar to the one now . In
use at the locks.
