Rhodes A Verner, Brewers; Malnters and lop dealer's Their Brewery is on Stevenson street, neer Pennsylvania avenue, and their office and molt house, corner of Penn street and Barker's alley. Malting an d brewing is getting to be a very important business in Pitts burgh, and the proprietors of this establishment, with their well-known industry and enterprise, are determined that it shall not be behind, but rather ahead of their neighbors. Their malt houso is, we believe, the largest now in operation in the city, and fis capable of malting 60,000 bushels a year. About calf of this amount Of grain, Messrs. It. 4 V will manufacture at their own brewery, while the -rest, in malt, will be forwarded to different points in the West, where they have permanent agencies es tablished. Their energy deserves success, and if asach pure and sparkling ale as they will manufac r tare in a few days, when the enlargement of their brewery is completed, were drunk by those who stake stimulants, instead of poisoned whisky, there 'would be lees drunkenness, maniapoto, broken iheads, stabbing, IC., Ac. A Nem and Good Thing.—F. R. Rubinson i proved gridiron, or-downward draught broiling up• paratus, is the name of a new and very useful arti• ale, that every house-keeper should have. We bare tried one of them, and hare no hesitation in endor• ailg the following, which we dip from the circular of the agent : Robinson's double-acting, downward draught Gridiron, or Broiling Apparatus, is unquestionably an improvement, being adapted to all sizes of cola anon stowed and ranges, and so constructed as to Wing dm beat of wend or coal store into direst ron tact. with the meat, without one particle of its smoke or Ware. Strong insinuations are msde that certain individuals did not want the wretched man to finish the statement and confession he had communicated to a press reporter, and that under the cloak of friendship, they prepared the poisonous dregs that sealed bit lips, telling him it was a preparation intended to steady his nerves and soothe him in his misery.— That the mixture did quiet his nerves, the reader knows full well; but there is a day coming when Corrigan and his accomplices In dark and bloody crimes will all appear face to face, and pass tunics the all searching eye of one from wham no secrets can be hid. HIRST SRSSION. • Wasnraerea July Sl—Senate.—The Senate took 10 the bill regu lating the compensation of members of Congress. Mr. CoHamer proposed as a substitute, that mem bers shall receive, for attendance at the sessions, 25 per cent. additional to what they are now entitled to by law. The bill was then referred to the Committe on Finance. House.—The bill providing for the settlement of the claims of the Officers of the Revolution, and the widows and orphans of these who died in the ser vice, was taken up and debated at length. (SECOND DISPATCH.] Senate.—Mr. ulee, from the Post Office Commit tee, reported back the bill authorizing the Post Mas ter-General to contract with Vanderbilt for carrying the mail between New York and Southampton, ma king it the duty of the contractor to extend the trips to Bremen or Havre, or those places alternately, whenever required by the Post Master General, with. out additional compensation for the round voyage. Also providing that Antwerp may at any time be substituted for either of these places. Another amendment directs Secretary Marcy to give notice as provided in the act of 102, to terminate the ar rangement for additional allowance for the transpor tation of the mall between New York and Liverpool, in the C Aline line of steamers. .Tbe bill was mado the special order for Monday. The bill to continue the improvements of the har bor of Newark, N. J., gave rise to an animated de bate, but the bill was not disposed of. The bill directing the manner of the payment of California war bonds, was then considered and pass- ed. On motion of Mr. Seward, a resolution was adapt ed calling on the Secretary of War to report whether the public interests require an improvement of the roads in connection with West Point, New York, and the interior of the country lying westward thereof, and if so, what is the most practicable and expedi tious mode of making such communication, and the expense thereof. The Senate passed the House bill to continue the improvement of Dee Moines Rapids, Mississippi, and the improvement of the harbors of Newark, New Jersey, Conneaut, Huron, Fairport, Ashtabula, San dusky, Cleveland, Black .Itiver in' Ohio, Buffalo, Dunkirk, Oak Orchard Creek, Big Sodas, ',Brie So das in New York, and making appropriations for e steam Dredge on Lake Ontario; for the completion of the Breakwater at Burlington, Vt.; and bills pro viding for the continuation of the improvement of the Missouri and Arkansas Rivers, and to continue the construction of the breakwater at the east side of Ready Island. The Senate confirmed, without opposition, the ap pointment of vol. Geary as Governor of Kansas. Adjourned. House.—The Newark Harbor bill passed. Kansas contested election case was postponed till to-morrow—Mr. Washburn, of Me., giving notice that he shall move the previous question at three o'clock. The bill expediting the issuing of patents for con firmed land claims in California, was debated and tabled by thirty majority 'the fortification appropriation bill was then dis• cussed. The Kansas election case was taken up. Mr. Waehburne, of Maine, maintained that the election of Whitfield was without authority of law, end that he comes here only as the choice of a minor ity of the resideut °Risen: of liansas ; therefore he is not entitled to a seat as a delegate. The election under which Reeder claimed, was equally without authority of law ; but inasmuch as be is the choice of a larger nuinher of residents there than those who voted for Whitfield, the committee recommended that he be admitted to the inset he claims, rather than to d e ny lip real cut Oithene Merely because that choice Was granites ad gutiide of Hie lege] forms, and ne t cessarily so imams° the law -making power was des troyed by foreign violence. To deny him a seat is to deny Kansas the right to tie beard fat all on the flour of the House. Mr. Smith, of Tenn., called attention to the fact Ow the Committee en Election, in other contested cases, had reported a resolution that the contestant was entitled to his seat; but in this they recommea dad that Reeder be admitted. Was might or right to prevail? Mr. Washburn repealed that neither Mr. Whitfield nor Mr. Reeder were chosen by the existing law. in the present faze the oommittee had fellowed a prece dent set concerning Wisconsin or Minnesota terri tories. Itwas competent for the House to admit Mr. Reeder as a delegate. Mr. Smith said that Reeder had no legal right ; vet you would admit him. Mr. li,toplipi,..s, takin4 issee with Mr. Washburn, remarked that whore there is a legally organized ter ritorial government, some person might be, under the law, entitled to a seat as a delegate. In the case referred to by the gentleman from Maine, there was no organized government ; but In Kansas, prow 'aim, is made by law for the election of delegates, there fore the precedent did not apply. In the course of his remarks, he alluded to the adoption of Mr. Sher man's amendment, to the Army Bill, saying that the majority of the House thus evinced their desire to strike down the main pillar of liberty, namely, the tight of thy people to bear arms, as secured by His Constitution. When be saw such things, be almost despaired of any thing being dons in behalf of law and order, the Constitution being regarded as no longer binding. Mr. Sherman replied to Mr Oliver's Missouri minor ity report of the Kansas Investigating Committee, and maintained the truth of the statements set forth by the majority concerning the invasion of Kansas by Missourians, and their violent eontrol of the elec. tions, trampling on the rights of the resident voters. He argued that the remedy for the Free State men in that territory, by judicial process, was utterly futile. He would vote fur unseating Mr. Whitfield, because the latter represents the for c es wno invaded 4ansup. The tars of the territory were illegally passed, end ought! LO he repealed, the militia disarmed, sad the whole federal treasury, if necessary, expended to keep the peace. Mr. Savage insisted that the whole transaction in its origin was an assault on the Constitution and laws of the United States, and in its progress was an assault on justice and truth:instead of facts. The re port of the majority of the !lat.!. Investigating Coin. ',dime., was a compound of the grossest partiality. misrepresentations and falsehoods, not to say per. jury. lie proceeded to show that the report was en titled to no credit, as It was contradicted by the re cords in the case; the statements were base, and surpassed the fictitious stories of Munchauson, list liver and the Arabian Nights. .To the traitorous and bloody movements of the Emigrant- Aid So,ju. tics, and others who supported them in Congress and elsewhere, must be attributed all the horrible event, in Kansas. Like gamblers, they resort to the bowie knife and the grab game, four hundred millions of the federal treasure being the stake for ebieh they are now coneluoting their Presidential schemes If any northern men say that they have better men, ' women or agriculture than the South, he is ready to tell them they lie, from the bottom of their shoes. 1 Mr. Oliver, of Missouri, contended that under the 1 Resolution providing for the Kanase Investigating 1 Committee they had no authority into the validity of I the Legislative Assembly. It was a violation of ev- I ery principle of law ; it was degrading in his col learues un the committee thus to transcend their I pi, iters, lie er.mld psk 7hether the House was wil ling to trample on law by admitting . tteeder i Were men so far loot to justice and decency as to be guilty of such a monstrosity.? He could not believe it t,tl it be so recorded, Ind then he should Pee it will, shame and mortification. Mr. firasliburn asked that the statement of Reeder be teed. Several objections were Interposed, but aflprwards withdrawn. A letter from H. Green, dated from the Merchants' ' Hotel, Philadelphia, was first read, stating that Mr. , iteader was confined there by sickness, and wishing soma gentletsien to write to Reeder and inform him on what day the contested election will be closed. The Speaker remarked that Mr. Reederis statement waa without date. ' The Clerk commenced reading to the effect that the greed. ir s aaa of evidence renders it indisputable that the Legislative Asaambly of Kansas was a fraud , ulent, usurpating body, elected in a manner disgrace 't.es ic the ag , . He assumes that the law under which ' Nhildield was elected, was absolutely void, and calls f ur „Lem conderenetioo as a stupendous fraud. His 0 .., L , ,A,,,,,;0n, so far as time toad place were concerned, wa s not in at.zordancs with the previous law ; he d r ain:, however, tea: be received a large majority of legal votes, and that his opponent was sustained by little bands of coters, and seoesCons from Missouri, Calling short in the ..'Fgro r Sat? of his la s al "teB. He expressed his high grata:Ndlotil t k at 1, 0 previous Po sittone relative to the alleged.OLoclori had been sits tabled by the recent investigation, and repeats that Whitfield has no shadow of right to the a;."..t. Ineffectual efforte were made by Messrs. Pheps and Humphrey Marshall to dispense with further reading. It could be printed and laid on the tables of the members to-morrow morning, Mr. Campbell, of Ohio, wanted the House to go into Committee on the Fortification bill, saying that the public business demanded that they should work after four o'clock. The Clerk resumed reading; but before he had finished, a motion to adjourn prevailed. Land; a good • - Wtorcect.i., Vt., July 31.—Five bodies have been recovered from thi wreak of the John Jay. Seymour have been nominated as the electors at large. Other resolutions were passed of a local character, and speeches were delivered by Gov. Seymour and others. There was much enthusiasm.
