iaS4 808. 0. WALKER, Secretary

We have received a copy of the Report of the
Trustees of the Pittsburgh Gas Company, for the

of $11,656,64 applicable to the extension of
resins and the erection of public lamps for the
comtng year.
During the past year there have been laid

then be enabled to furnish any amount of gas
that may be required. •
The new office, at the corner of Smithfield
street and Diamond alley, has beenpurchased out
of the contingent fund, and is neatly fitted up.
This is a central locality, and has given much
satisfaction to the customers of the company, who
ere now saved the trouble of going out to the
works to transact business.
The Trustees have sold 300 shares of the stock,
of the 10(1 ; 0 authorised to be sold, which it is
expected will be sufficient to pay for the improve.
ments that are oeing made this year. The Trus
tees expect to sell the remaining 700 shares. and
erect a gas holder, which will complete all the
proposed extensions of the work.
Shucking Cuslcalty.—We are called upon to record
a most melancholy casualty by which John H. Done,
Esq., Superintendent of the Illinois Central Railroad
was dreadfully mangled, in such a manner that no
hopes are entertained of saving his life.
He was out upon the track about six miles south
of the city yesterday afternoon, in company with
Mr, Kellogg, a civil engineer in the employ of the
Company. A freight train coming by the spot, Mr.
Done directed Mr. Kellog to signal It to stop, and
they would get upon it and come io to the depot.
Mr. Kellogg gave the signal, the train held up and
Mr. Kellogg jumped upon it safely shout the middle
of it, supposing that Mr. Done would get upon some
of the rear cars. He did not see him-after jumping,
but looking back and not seeing him, supposed he
was also on some of the cars, and the train moved on
again to the depot.
This was a quarter before fire o'clock. In a few
minutes after, as another freight train, coming into
the city, neared the spot where the former train had
stopped, the engineer discovered the body of a man
lying at the side of the track, and brought the train
to stand before reaching him.
On going up to him, the persons on the train were
horrified to discover Mr. Done. Hie left leg entirely
crashed from about midway between the hip and the
knee to near the ankle, end the right crushed from
the knee to the foot. Hell head was also severely
braised on the back pant of it. and he was entirely
insensible.
He was brought to the depot on that train nod
e n
'rayed to hie residence on Washington street near
Wabash avenue, and lire. Brainard, leleVicker and
Morfit summoned at once to his relief. They coned
ered it useless to perform amputation unless he shc old
revive in some degree, which he had not up to eles
o'clock.
Mr. Done swha appointed Superintendent of tbe
Illinois Central road but fall, and in Mir capacity
had proved a moat capable and valuable officer. lie
was no less prized ea a citizen, and during hie brad
residence, here with to family had foriami larva
circle of acquaintance who will sincerely mourn ibo

A Handsome Present.-IVe acknowledge the re•

a chance for the 41pposition in Indiana; that Fill

don't doubt It.

Liquor.—Margaret O'Brien, being under the in
finance of John Barley-corn or something stronger,
took it into her bead to assault and batter Mary Ann
Young. " The head and front of her offending had
that extent—no more ;" but Ald. Wilson thought it
sufficient to hold her to bail in $3OO to answer, in
default of which o '7 was sent to the bill. It was the
greater shame fur Margaret to gat on a" high" that
ended in her incarceration, as she is the mother of a
One looking little boy of five summers, who, having
no one to take care of him, had also to be committed.
When consigned to Jailor Phillips' care, she behaved
like a devil incarnate, making the day hideous with
her clamor, and proving the truth of the poetical
boll hack nu fury like a woman tdrunt
Charged with Stealing sso.—Benj. Sharp, a col
ored man, was committed yesterday for further bear
ing this afternoon by Ald. Johns, on a charge of
stealing a pocket book containing $5O from a bread
man in the Diamond market. The bread man, in
dispensing the staff of life for a consideration, took
out his wallet to make change, and laying it down
for a moment, turned round to attend to some other
easterner. When be looked for it, it had mysteri
ously disappeared. No trace of it could be found on
Sharp, however, when searched ; and It is but fair to
say be hes heretofore borne a character for honesty.
Burned.—The grist mill and barn formerly
owned by Mr. Pershing, situated about five miles up
the creek from Youngstown, Westmoreland county,
wore entirely destroyed by fire on Wednesday la.i.
The fire caught the mill from the engine, and. 63
the wind was strong, it carried the sparks to the
burs, and soon the two buildings were in ruins. The
property had been purchased by Mr. John Flux/aril
but a short time since.
in Tura.—J. Edgar Thompson, President of the
Pennsylvania Central Railroad arrived, in town last
night, and is stopping at the Monongahela Hoare.
Mr. Thompson is bore to attend the election for Di
rector• of the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago
Railroad, which takes place at the Board of Trade
Rooms to day. Ile votes the stock held by the
Pennsylvania Central Railroad Company in the con
solidated road.
Books in every department of literature, will lie
sold this evening at Darts' auction rooms from a eery
large and well selected stock. Late popular public^.
Wine, as well as works of a long established repots
town, will be found among them.
Coy Moen!lty.—There were twenty deaths in ths
aity last week—nineteen whites and toot colored.
This is a sLiglit increase on but week, but the publ,r
health it still good. considering the reeking filth of
the bighways and by wart.
