A Handsome Testimonial.—The citizens of Alle
gheny have manifested their high appreciation of the
services of William Boyd, Eaq., of that city, who,
by his exertions at:Harrisburg, during the session of
the Legislature last winter, counteracted the efforts
madokto effect thorepeal of the Paving Law, by pre
senting him with a splendid melodeon. This mole
deonwas made at the celebrated manufactory of Car
hart t 'Needham, for Messrs. H. Sieber & Brother,
of fifth street, the agents in this city, and is proba
.blythe attest ever brought to Pittsburgh. It is fur
nished wtlh a double bank of keys, and two sets of
reeds, which, by the use of a stop, can be made to
produce a most agreeable variety of tone. The case
is very elaborately finished. On the front is placed
a silver plate bearing the following inscription :
"Testimonial to William Boyd, Esq., for his tin-
Wearied, and, with other citizens, successful efforts in
preventing the repeal of the Allegheny Paving Law
—Presented July, A. D. 1856." The value of the
instrument is about $2OO. This is a very handsome
tribute to Mr. Boyd's public spirit; and in this in
stance, at leant, be will not be inclined to indorse
the somewhat stale maxim that " Republics are un
grateful."
-
A Barker Bitten.—Quite a row occurred on Liber
ty street on Saturday afternoon in front of a clothing
flora on said street. Two men were passing along
—one Jain Lenen by name—when a young man
named Wm. Anderson, who stands in Reesman's
clothing store, rushed out and seizing them by the
garments imperatively invited them in to make a
selection of something to wear. Not liking the in
• vitation, Lenen's companion tweaked him by the
„prohoacie, and Lenen drew ” the claret " with his firt
;:ittl4,:ntharwise assailed him. An information was
after a full hearing John was discharged
'ripan paying the costs, amounting to the snug Bum of
$5,29, which would have purchased hips a cheap sum
, mar. rig. Ald. Wilson meted out the even-handed
fi justice.
Freight Wesileard.--The Ohio and Pennsylvania
Railroad, Educe the suspension of river navigation,
has been doing a prosperous business, there being
upwards of four hundred tons daily now carried over
this road westward, with a capacity for double that
amount, there being abundance of cars. whilst the
machinery is in perfect order. The passenger busi
nets is also in advance of the same season y , ar.
Freight is now delivered from Cincinnati within two
days, a thing never before done on this road. IVe are
glad of these fasts, as will be all the stockholders,
and speaks loudly for the management of this valu •
able improvement.
Health and Contfurt.—Now, when the thermometer
indicates a temperature of from ninety to one bur,
dred degrees (Fahrenheit) in the shade, we cannot
think of any bettor way to keep cool, or at least
Avoid "the melting mood" than by taking a bath.
It will not only add to one's comfort, but it has also
more virtue for the preservation of a healthy consti
tution than . the thousand and one humbugs adver
tised as sovereign remedies for " all the ills that
fs.huir to." One of the best bathing places in
town is at the St. Clair Hotel barber-shop. A word

Drowned.—A young man named Reinhart ‘i

of his companions in the Allegheny, near the Aque
duct. He was a saddler by trade, and worked f..r
Ur. Htissenforder, whose shop is on Penn street, In
the Fifth Ward. His body was recovered on Sunday
morning, near the place where it sunk.
Sent to Jail.—Catharine Murphy, an Irish womaa,
in the neighborhood of thirty, whose face is not un
familiar to those who frequent the Police Courts,
was cant to jail by Ald. Johns, yesterdday. Her
offence was "night walking." An elderly female
named Ann McCarty, also an Emeralder, was likt
wise committed b4the same magistrate.

FROM CALIFORNIA AND NICARAGUA
ARREST OF A SUPREME JUDGE!
New ORLEANS, July 25.—The Granada arrived
last night with San Francisco dates to the sth, and
Greytown to the 21st.
The Illinois takes forward $1,640,000.
On the Isthmus every thing was quiet.
Aspinwall is becoming sickly. Gen. Walker was
was inaugurated President on the 12th inst.
Rivas still holds possession of Leon.
Major Waters' command is sent to Leon on account
of a rumor that the Guatemaleans near that city had
been fired on by the Rivas party. One, it is said,
was wounded, and several of the Rivas party killed.
Waters waited outside sometime, and the enemy not
appearing ent"rcd. There is no sign of an invasion
now, but it is certain that the league of the Northern
States still exists. No invasion is looked for until
the close of the rainy season. Walker needs men
and money for the coming campaign.
Judge Terry, of the Supreme Court, was arrested
for stabbing a Committee policeman, whilst making
an arrest.
The Vigilance Committee is now firmly estab
fished.
The Governor remaina at Sacramento
It is reported that many, considering his election
an usurpation, had declared against Walker. Col
onel Mender and Oeneral Chillou are among the de
serters.
Much sickness prevails among Walker's troops
and there arc frequent desertions.
At San Francisco there is no abatement of the ex
eitement. The Vigilance Committee are still in see
sine.
Tho accounts from the mines are very favorable,
and the agricultural prospect:: cheering.
The conduct ~r Herbert, in killing Keating, ex
cites a great deal of indignation.
Oregon skirmishes continue. Cul. Wright is not
killed. Col. Buchanan had a fight at the Big Mea
dows, and killed forty Indians and ten whites.
The election returns are not all in. They will pro
bably be democratic.
All arms, collected by the law and order men, have
been seized by the Vigilance Committee.
Durkee, one of the Committee, had been arrested
on a charge of piracy, for seizing arms belonging to
the State from the schooner Wizard, of Now York.
WASHINGTON, July 26.—1 n the Herbert trial, last
evening, Mr. Preston, fur the prosecution, wished to
reply to Mr. Walker's strictures, which was objected
to by the counsel for prisoner. Ex-Mayor Lenox,
who was standing near, was overheard by Mr. Rad•
cliffe to observe that that was unfair or unjust. Mr.
Radcliffe sharply said they wanted no outsider's in
terference, and in the course of a hurried colloquy,
Mr. Lenox called him a liar. Mr. Radcliffe dashed
at Mr. Lenox, and Mr. Bradley interposed to prevent
collision. Such is the version of the affair.
Subsequently Deputy Marshal Phillips made com
plaint beffire Justice Thompson, who was on the pre
mises, that he had reason to believe that Mr. Red.
cliffs bad sent, and Mr. Lenox had received, a chal
lenge. Mr. Radcliffe was forthwith arrested and held
to buil in $3,000 not to fight a duel. A warrant was
also served on Mr. Lenox, but be has failed to up
pear.
There is much excitement and indignation among
the Irish portion of our population at the acquittal of
Herbert. lie loft NVashingu•n early this morning.
The two trials have COM the government about cigh.
teen hundred liars.
Ex. Mayor L,- :c has been arrested and held to
bail. not to fight a duel with Mr. Radcliffe.
Several other personal difficulties growing out of
the Herbert affair, still remain unsettled.
WAAHINUTON. July '26.-- Tho Senate was nut in
session to-day, having yesterday- adjourned till Mon
day.
Holoo..—The House ie engaged in consideration of
bills upon the private calendar.
The House passed one private bill aed rejected
another. and then adjourned.
are, July 26.—The !hie
heretofore a Democratic organ, has been purchased
by friends of Filitnore, and will hereafter support
Fillmore and Donelson.
BItt, ,, KLYs. July 26.—Jaineet Wise was killed, anti
eight others wounded—three, it LI feared, fatally--by
the reviling of the scaffolding upon which they cern
