Y LOCAL AFTATRS. Our Country Exchanges.—The chief value of our country exchanges to us is their local news, and to their subscribers everywhere we imagine it will be found to be the first read, showing that feature to be very essential to make the newspaper of interest. • Yet some of oar brethren of the country press ig nore the exletesee of their own locality by studious ly &vatting the mention of anything that may trans . phis in their own neighborhood. There are some papers on our exchange list that are ever welcome ; • for we feel assured before opening them that they have some local item of interest worth making a note of. Others, on the contrary, we rarely take the trouble to look into, fooling assured that it would not pay, although their editors are excellent fellows, with abundant capacity to make a newspaper that could not fail being read, if they would only make a note of things going on at home. We take the trouble of furnishing a column every day to our readetp and exchanges, and it seems rather like get tingsio quid pro quo if we do not at least receive an item or two in return. ! SATURDAY MORNING MY' 2f;. • • THE SIXTH ANNUAL EXHIBITION OP THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY, WILL BE HELD AT PITTSBURGH On SEPTEMBER 30thi and on OCTOBER Ist, Ed and 3d, 18156. Je24 BOAT. C. WALESA, Secretary. Meadville, Pa.—A summer resort for ladies and gentlemen who can afford to leave the smoke and dust of the city for a short time, and seek a cool retreat in the country, is very desirable. To all per sons who entertain such a disposition we would say take a seat in the mail stage that goes through But ter and Mercer to Meadville. There you will find a beautiful and healthy town, adjacent to which are creeks, lakes and other ponds of water, abounding In numerous members of the finny (Finney) tribe. All the fish want is to be coaxed out of their native element by clever fellows and good bait. An elegant place to stop, we might suggest in this connection, is kept by Mr. J. W. Bigony, of the Barton House, where the weary traveler can always find a home. Blgony buys his liquor from Bill Mechling, of the house of Wm. Carr k Co., which is a sure guarantee Abet no one who stops there will be poisoned. The Buchanan and Itreekinridge , flee Club met last evening at Wilkins Hall to perfect some uutir ished business. Afier `.z.earing the reports of committees, and attending some other mat ters, Dr. Keyser was called upon to address the meeting. The Dr. responded in a few pertinent and appropriate remarks which received the merited and hearty applause of those present. We hope to hear this gentlemen often during the present campaign in such spirit-stirring addresses as the one delivered I , y him last night. After the speech the assemblage were favored with some few songs from the tilee Club. Altogether, the affair last night was one which gave a vigorous impulse to the future of the Buchanan and Breckinridge Glee Club. Tit for Tit.—A somewhat notorious woman by the name of Mary Burke mode an information yes terday against a Mrs. flanne, who resides on Elm, between Prospect and Webster streets, for keeping a tippling house. Mrs. U. alleges that the complaint of the Cyprian was made in pure malice, as she has not sold liquor, and was done merely for rerenge, because she had remonstrated with her for keeping np suoh a noise in her mansion at unseasonable hours. She therefore informed against Mary for keeping a disorderly house, and a warrant is now in the hands of the officers, but no arrest bas yet been -made. Poicerfii/ Disinjectant.—lt does not seem to be .generally known that a few cents worth of copper:“ will destroy the effluvia of toss pools, so horribly -aggravating at present. Two pounds of coppers, dissolved in a ;bucket of water will work wonder,. We have seen It tried, and we advise every house keeper to try it immediately. 'Could not the Bosril of Health recommend it, and insist upon its use as a disinfecting agent. The excessive heat of the ar ea. they, the vast accumulation of filth in courts and alloys, invites the attention of sanitary Committee., and we hope the experiment will be tried imruedi tely. Infiuman.—A wretch by the name of Michael Lu kin was committed on complaint of Dr. McCook yes terday, for the following cause : Larkin has a son now prostrated with typhoid fever, whom Dr. Itie- Cook is attending, but such has been the conduct of the father that the boy's malady has been mach in creased, and it has been necessary to confine the pa rent, whose life is one of great dissipation, rendering him a charge upon and nuisance to his industritus and much•abused wife. Drownari.---..roroner Alexander held an inquest on the ilody of ti young man (name unknown) at Me Kee's Rocks, last evening, about six 0 ' al ock body was found immediately opposite the Roela. The jury found a verdict in accordance with the mho, e facts. THIRTY-FOURTH CONGRESS FIRST SESSION Wasummrom, July 24.—At thb conclusion of the evening session of the House Mr. Buchanan said the continuance of Mr. Fillmore in the Presidential son test must very greatly increase Fremont's chances of an election. In support of this opinion, he quoted the New York Courier and Enquirer and the:Tribune. He reviewed Know Nothingism North and South, in terms of condemnation, charging that in the North it is allied to abolitionism. Mr. Evans opposed fillibustetism, replying to the speech of Mr. Quitman, and condemning the doe. trines of Mr. Buchanan as avowed in the Ostend Conference. - • - - • • -. Mr. Burlingame has returned to the city, and ap peared in the House last evening. A message was received from the President recom mending an appropriation of $250,000 to complete the purchase of a building in Philadelphia for a Post Office, and $50,000 for fitting up the same. The House considered and passed 20 private bills, including the Senate bill for the relief of widows and orphans of officers, seamen and mariners of the sloop Albany and brig Porpoise; the 18th of April and 50th of June, 1855, to be taken as the days on which the vessels were lost, and from which the pensions shall commence. The House then took a recess till 7 o'clock. crests,; SESSION. Mr. Crawford, speaking of the slavery question said that the North never respected the Missouri re, striction except when it w..rked to their advantage, while the South acknowledged it. In the Oregon bill the Compromise measures of 1850 gave the South nothing to which she was not entitled, and now what was thus secured to them is to be repudiated by two parties opposed to the Democracy. Mr. Jewett said if Fremont shall succeed on purely sectional ground., the result would be disastrous to the Union. He proceeded to show the principles and policy of the Rnow Nothings in direct conflict not only with the Federal Union, but with tthe Con stitution of every State of which he had knowlekge. Mr. Oa defended the American party, saying that it was illiberal in his c , dleague to charge them in the absence of a knowledge of toe facts with a deep laid conspiracy. Senate.—Mr. Wilson submitted a resolution, which lies over, requesting the President to inform the Sen ate whether the. reported reply of flea. Smith, re fusing to protect the citizens of Leavenworth from hands of armed marauders is true; if so, whether such reply was authorized by the instructions of the President ur Secretary of War' The Senate passed six private bills and one provi ding for the compulsory pre-paymeut of postage on all printed matter. A motion was made that the Senate adjourn till Monday. Mr. Adams asked fur the yeas and nays, which were not ordered—only four Senators second ing the call. lie remarked that at was extraordinary that such a notion should be made within three weeks of the terminanation of the session, when su ranch business was of be acted upon. It seemed as if the Senators were afraid to record their votes ou thu question to aj.,urn over. Mr. Tutanba answered that nobody was afraid, but the Senate was new tar ahoad of the house, and if they sat hut three day... , in the week. it would he just as well for the euuntry.
