DEMOCHATIU STATE. CENTRAL CUM
THE TEST QUESTION -THE GEIt-
We are informed that there I , to be a l'on‘,ol
tion of those German editors who have showi: a
disposition to join with the Know Nothings and
Zlisunionista in voting for Fremont. The object
of that Convention is to agree upon an inter
rogatory to be addressed to Mr. Fremont. It .s
in substance this. " Will you, if elected Presi
" dent, use all your conctinit.mal power to
" prevent any such alteration of the naturalizit
" tion laws as will extend the term of residenve
before naturalization
Mr. John r Fremont will be required to an
swer this question He will be told that if Le
gives a negative answer he can expect very little
support from the tierman voters. If he declines
to answer his silence will be considered a ritya--,,
answer.
Now, that is the severe and terrible test to
which he is to be brought. The Germans have
resolved not to •' go it blind" with the Know
Nothings. They demand a distinct pledge fr'tn
Fremont that he repudiates Know Nothingisw.
Will he dare give such a pledge. And the Ger
man editors say it must he an open, publul , d
pledge.' No secret answer will be received. lie
must openly renounce Know Nothingism or lwe
their vote. The answer must be clear and une- •
qUiTOCiti—public and binding. So say some of
the German editors who are now counted so se
supporters of Fremont.
Severe as this test is it i 4 a prrfrctl2. - falr
and an honest candidate could answer it dist hot
ly and at °ace Will Fr,dindit answer it I'tie
does u, , t, it to because he design., to rii,ut tl.e
Germane. If he an,wers the questions in the
affirmative will the Americans 5... , te for him
he answers it in the negative, or keep silence,
which is the same thing, will the Germans vote
for him
LC Illay turn nut after all that the Germans are
not quite so easily fooled as the political deta
gogues thought. It did turn out ,so
Are they less intelligent, or mindful of their own
interests now. If the German editors do th s
thing, which they publicly declare it their inten
tion to do, they will be entitled to a respectful
answer. But if they fail to do it. or get a
negative answer or silence, they will be untrue to
their readers if they support Fremont. It to net
a largeportion of the German voters that hate
any thought of supporting the candidate of the
Know Nothings, and it is only them of which
we speak .
Be it remembered, the Know Nothing Conven
tion nominated Fremont at New York and 1,,
formally accepted that nomination. Can he now
repudiate one of their cardinal principles
Meantime he is seeking the votes of German,.
Can he refuse to answer their question as they
desire': We shall see.
Meantime, also, the Berman Democrats vf
Pittsburgh and Allegheny have resolved to ho!.1
a mass meeting and declare for themselves, and
start a new Democratic German paper
The Game of Brag
Never before was the desperate •' game of
brag " so eagerly and despairingly resorted t.,
by the opponents of the Democracy, to get up :i
tittle excitement It is hard work, however .
But, in the midst of their boasting, Horrors
Greeley comes in with a wet blanket, and win •
guishes every spark of enthusiasm. Here is
what he says in the N. V. Tribune:
H's do not enter upon the contest before us at
any sprit of confidence. We admit the apparent
odds are greatly in favor of our adversaries. We
realize the obstacles thrown in the way of our
success by the existence and peculiarities of the
• American' organization. We know that the
votes of all the slave States, but Missouri and
Delaware, with probably these also, will be
thrown for either Buchanan or Fillmore—most of
them for the former. We feel that the posses.;
ion of the Government, with the disbursement of
the millions constantly leaving from the Treasury,
weighs heavily in favor of the Cincinnati tibrill
!lees We are prepared to hear that several emi
nently reepectable,distinguished and wealthy citizens.
who have heretofore voted mainly with us,when they
toted at all, will no refuse to support the Phila
delphia nominees."
The expectation of the Tribune, that many
"eminent, respectable, distinguished and wealthy
citizens, who have heretofore voted mainly with
us," will not go for the little Nlaraposn adven
; curer, has been abundantly realized. There are
thousands of such instance , in every State in
the Union.
All the Southern States he gives up and he
considers the —American Organization" as great
ly in the way of Republican success. The at
tempt to crush the Know-Nothing party at one
blow, at the Philadelphia Convention, he sees
plainly did not succeed. It wouldn't be killed
so easy. Thousands of them would prefer to
vote for P ...Annan, rather than with a party that
irned alliance with them. They are national
men, and will throw their influenoe against the
avowed disunionists. No wonder Greeley des
pairingly says, " We admit the apparent odds are
greatly favor of our adversaries." Is not that
an extinguisher on the " (lame of Brag ?"
Chance fora Hest.
The Chicago Tioo: of the 13th inst. puts the
following crusher on the idle talk about the re
sult in Illinoi , :
We observe that persons at a distance seem to
i
put some faith n the statements that there is a pos
sibility that Illinois will vote for Fremont. We know
that it has been said and positively averred by Black
Republican orators that Illinois would vote the oppo
sition ticket. Such an idea, when expressed here, is
considered toe stale even fur a joke. No roan in his
senses thinks of this State voting for any one but I3u
cbanan. As we said when Mr. Buchanan was nomi
nated, the Democracy of Illinois will give him a
larger majority, in proportion to the entire vote, than
he will obtain in Pennsylvania. Any Pennsylvania
editor who wants to loose , a hat on that proposition
may apply for our measure at once."

We published yesterday a letter from Col Ma
eon, written from California nearly nine years
ago, in which that officer sets forth that Colonel
Fremont bought 600 hundred head of cattle of a
Mr. Celis for .$6,975, and gave a bond in the
name of the government for payment. Those
cattle he converted .to his own use, leaving the
government to pay for them. Ite also borrowed
$'2,&00 from the same man, and signed a note
as a public officer for the payment. The letter
I charges that Col Fremont pocketed the money,
and leased out the cattle for breeding for his own
use, leaving the government to pay for both.
Here, then, is $9,475 of public property embez
zled some years ago by an adventurer who is
now a candidate for the Presidency ! ' Is the
charge true ` We have never heard of a contra
! diction. That letter of Col. Mason's has been
on file at the War Department over eight years.
Who has ever heard of the charge being answered
or contradicted I
JULY 1t
Now, make Col. Fremont President, and if his
officers embezzle the public funds, how can
he call them to account for it They point
to Mason's letter as their reply. Has any one
ever heard of a contradiction ° Is it ant• wonder
that the speculators want to make him Presi
dent". But will the honest masses of the people
thus reward peculation.
The letter first appeared in the Washington

A JOKBIL—The Philadelphia 80/eon has it
pretty good joke on the 24th. In ridiculing the
game of brag which the Fremontere are trying
so hard to play to some purpose, it asks the
question : " Will Mr. Buchanan withdraw
Pretty well done for the Bulletin, which ratio;

FILLMORE TIC KET —At a Fillmore Convention
yesterday the following gentlemen were elected
delegates to the State Convention;
Jasper E. Brady, Samuel Morrow,
Dr. Wm. Wrigtc, S. M. IlayK.
Ephraim Jones, Dr. Win. Madeira
Samuel Beitler.
They were instructed to vote only f.q. a straight

IN no State of the l Dion Jo the Democrats
seem to be more thoroughly aroused and active
than in Indiana. Their mass meetings are
largely attended, and their editors and letter
writers seem to think it beyond a doubt that the
majority in that State for Buck and Breck"
will be from ten to twenty thousand.
SOME indiscreet wight in Louisville, Ky., was

The New York Herald, a Fremont organ, has
the following rather loft-handed compliment for
Charles Sumner and his speech :
, 4 There must be something very singular in
the atmosphere of Washington. Here we find a
man like Mr. Sumner, who, as his frieuds tell us,
wait distinguished before he went to the capital
for the gentleness of his manners, the refinement
of his feelings, the decorum of his language, es
sentially a gentleman and a man of fine mind :
well, he no sooner finds himself in the Senate
than he begins to belabor his fellow-citizens and
their States, and ends by discharging at their
heads a phillipic which is, perhaps, unrivalled
as a model of vituperative eloquence. How was
he transformed? This was the same Sumner,
who was so gentle, so mild spoken, so amiable :
how came he to acquire the ferocity which his
speech reveals? What made him sink the gen
tleman to assume the garb of the browbeating
pettifogger ?

The sanctity of the pulpit is tine of the safeguards
o f liberty : and I regard the sul•version,,of this hal.
lowed place to the degrading and staining influences
of party politics, as tonell to be ilcorecated. The in
fluence of the clergy has bean groat in all ages:
and, when wielded out of its legitimate sphere, hoe
always resulted in disaster and revolution --witness
the French Revolution. I need but allude to it. I
should be sorry to have any one imagine that I
refuse yielding the right to clergymen, out of the
pulpit, to speak and act upon all subjects as they
think right. But when they appear at the sacred
desk they lose their individuality--they are but the
mouthpieces of the Eternal, otineerned with the thi ng ,
of eternity, and not of time. Let them, then, lay
aside the character, the passions arid, the feelings of
human being% anti with clean hands and pure skirts,
proclaim the Message of regeneration, anti that mes
sage only. IC them point to the Fountain opened
in the house of David for sin and uncleanness,
while others dip in the dirty pool of pulitrts
But I weary you with my proeings. If you are
not already tired, I will :coin favor you with another
budget.
We copy the following from a Into number of
the Poughkeepsie IN. ) Tetryraph :
A barn•ralsing took place on the premises
of Mr. J. C. Pudney, in the town of Poughkeep
sie, a few days ago, at which 24 voters were pre
sent. After the frame was up it was proposed
to ascertain how they stood for the candidates
for the Presidency. Of the 24, one was for Fill

twenty-one, for Buchanan. No danger but that
barn will stand."
