O.)M ROLL CALL OF THE STATES In our view of the present state of the partc- , , and the results of late elections in the New Eng land and Middle States, yesterday, we did not mention either Rhode Island or Vermont (if Vermont, of course, we have neither a hope nor a wish Rhode Island, however, is in a different position. Its three votes are as likely to be La.-4 for Buchanan as for any other candidate. 1 description of the condition of parties in Ma•=a chusetta will apply to the little State of itho le Island There are the Black Republican. Fillmore American, a Gerrit Smith, and a strong Democratic party there. The Democrats are united all else is divided WP come next to Its poll tical history is remarkable the it can give sixty thousand majority for a lien crane candidate, and the very next a still larg, r majority against him. It is the most uncertain State in the Union. One thing, however, is cer tain; last year thirty-five thousand Know Noth ngs refused to vote for the Black Republi tan candidate, Chase. They cast their v•des t , r Trimble, an old Democrat. Will they vote n w for Fillmore" In the reports front some parts of Ohio it is represented that Fillmore has mole friends than Fremont. We are told that a Fillmore electoral ticket is sure to be in the fie! I, and to poll a large vote of the national Ameri cans. But the most encouraging indication from Ohio is the numerous accessions, almost dai'y recorded in our paper, of old line Whigs to the Democratic ranks. Three old line ‘S'llig papers have already run up the Buchanan and Breekin ridge flag. And the accessions are the flower, of the old Clay Whig party, such Whittlesey and Ewing. 1)11l) is as much interested in the safety of the Union as any other State. Let her people once be aroused to the wicked designs of the Greeley, Beecher, Sumner and• Garrison disunionists, and they will promptly respond to the call for the preservation of the Union and the Constitution. Fanaticism and falsehoood may prevail for wire; but we doubt it. Buchanan and 13reckinridge were the choice of Ohio ; and the Democratic papers are certainly very much in earnest, and express strong hopes of success. And it is cer tain, too, that our opponents in that State are very much alarmed at the resolute rally of the old line Whigs for the 1:13ioll But we inu:+t put down Ohio with her twenty-three votes, for the present, as doubtful. About three mouths ago the county election in Michigan took place : and, as we then stated, „,si the aggregate of Democratic majorities was Jot little short of 5,000. It was 40 stated in the papers of that State, and the returns published. Since then, and since the nomination of Bu chanan, numerous changes have taken place in his favor, and some of the most prominent old line whigs have come out cordially for the De mocratic ticket. Men wha were lately whig can didates for some of the highest offices in the State are now warm supporters of our nomi nees. No changes of an opposite and unfavor able character are reported. How then can there be doubt in regard to the result in Michi gan" Its six votes would seem certain for Bu chanan. It will be remembered that in April last loc.! elections occurred in Wisconsin, and that the re sults were published as almost uniformly favor able to the Democracy. It is not necessary now to recapitulate them. They were referred to then as conclusive evidence of the increasing strength of the Democracy. The last election fir Governor of that State was very nearly a tie. Old-line whigs of Wisconsin, too, are coin ing up to the support of the Union. V, isconsin's five voter; are claimed for Buchanan, but !nay be lost. This State has stood firmly for the Democracy for years. Even Greeley considers it very doubtful. In no Western States are more ac oessions from the Whig ranks reported. Leading Whigs are on the stump doing good service in our cause. Indiana, like Ohio, is deeply inter ested in the stability of the Union, and the dis unionists have no possible chance of success in the Hoosier State. Her thwiten will be cast in the electoral college as in the Cincinnati Con vention—first, last, and all the time for James Buchanan. In the city of t.'hicago last spring, at the elec tion for Mayor, the issue was fairly and boldly made between the Democracy and all opponents combined, and the Democratic candidate was elected by a handsome majority. In Springfield and many other towns the result was the same. These elections showed large Democratic gains, and that the tide was fairly turned. We are as sured now by the Democratic papers of that State that Illinois will be all right next Novena. ber.
