The Corrigan Tragedy-
The ehort item in yesterday's paper announcing
the rumor that Corrigan had, on Saturday night, pat
an °ditto his own existence by taking poison, turns
out to ba a fact: and briefly as possible we will give
our readers a.eketch of the man, his trial for mur
der, oonviction, sentence and death. On hearing the
report of the suicide we did not know but it might
possibly have been originated by some one who
wished to "fool the reporters," as it is sometimes
called, and at first did not feel disposed to pay much
attention to it. However, to satisfy ourselves, at 10
o'clock on Sunday night last, we took a seat in the
cars for Greensburgh, Mr. E. Y. Beggs conductor,
making the connection with the old county seat of
Allegheny, in an hour and a-half. Here we found
the rumor, in all its dread reality, fully confirmed.
A human being, who had been convicted, under the
laws Of his country, after an impartial trial, of the
highest crime known—taking the life of a follow
creature, and that person the wife of his bosom, her
whom be had sworn to lore, honor and protect, had
added still another crime to the long and black list
of which he stood charged, by takiag his own life;
and thus with his own and his wife's blood upon his
soul, rushed, unprepared, into the presence of his'
God.
Hugh Carrigan. about whom so much has been
said in the daily papers of this city, was born in the
county of Armagh, Province of Ulster, Ireland, in
1796, consequently at the time of his death was 60
years old. He was one of five children, there being
in the family three Bona and two daughters. His
two brothers enlisted in the British army after ar
riving at their majority, while the unfortunate sub
ject of this notice came to this land of liberty to seek
his fortune. One of his brothers, who was wounded
in the British service, and retired upon a pension,
now lives in Dublin.•
The first five years of Hugh's life, after crossing
the ocean, was spent in New York, New Jersey and
Canada, when he settled in Westmoreland county.
There he began an active business career as an under
contractor, and made some money, which he invest
ed in land, in the neighborhood of Greensburg,
One of his purchases was a farm, which he bought
for $ll6O. Soon after this he married the woman
for whose brutal and most unnatural murder he
was tried, convicted and sentenced to be hung.
We do nut deem it necessary to republishthe details
of his trial, and pass it over by stating that early in
the month of October last, his neighbors, missing his
wife, who was known as "big Mary " in the neigh
borhood, and knowing that the two were in the habit
of quarrellig very fiercely, suspected that all was not
right. The sequel proved their suspicions were well
founded. On the 12th of February 18:5, he was put
upon his trial at Greensburg, and after a full, fair
and impartial hearing of the case, the wretched man
was found guilty of murder in the first degree, and
on the following Saturday was sentenced, by Judge
Buffington, who presided at his trial, to be hung.
The Governor fixed Friday next, the 25th, as the day
upon which Corrigan was to suffer the extreme pen•
alto of the law. From the first all efforts to awaken
him to a proper sense of his awful situation appeared
fruitless. To the most Solemn warnings and fort t i:t
expostulations, the hardened wretch would reply wilt
a heartless laugh or trilling jest. After his rem.% tl
from the jail in this city to Greensbure, a short tiles ,
ago, he male application to the Governor for a io
priers) of ninety days, to give him time, no Le :.1
!egad, to arrange Lis business affair-. This av,..
refused---all hope of executive elemen-y was
crushed..w.ithin him. His, indeed, was a sad ease.
With his hands imbrued in the blood of the wife of
his youthful days. Isis heart unmoved or changed
front its stony hardness, this men-ter in human
shape, when all hope of escaping the dread sentence

For several days pr.s ions to last saturday evening,
which was the time he took the oxalis, acid that
caused his death, E. J. Keenan, Esq., was engaged,
et the request of the prisoner, in writing; out a -tat,•
ment of his life. to which be had promised to append
a full confession of all his crimes. They were fre
quently interrupted by persons calling Is see Corti
gas, and did not make much headway ; but on Sat
urday evening last he told Mr. K. to call early on the
following morning, and, the day being Sunday. they
would not be interrupted, and the matter could to
finished up. He had also written a note to Mr. Ful
ton, his spiritual adviser, to come on Tuesday, \
, and remain with him until the fatal hour.
These indications of repentance of course blinded u!I
Its to his real intention, and on Sunday morning,
when the dour of his cell was opened, a thrill of hor
ror was experienced by the atiendants, when they
beheld him who had, went to bed hale and hearty but
a few hours before, lying upon his couch, a lifeless
corpse. The immortal spirit of a desperate man had
flown to "that bourne from which no traveler re
turns," and he was his own murderer. Physicians
were immediately called, and a post mortum exami
nation held. his s omach and its contents were re
moved, together with his Lrain, and on Sunday evert
ing all that was left of Ilugh Corrigan, was buried on
the :.or House farm, about two miles and a half
from Greensburg
Yesterday morning we were shown by the polite
jailor, Mr. Cline, into the cell occupied by the sui•
tide. Marks of vomiting were upon the bedding.
and to show that every attention had been paid the
miserable being both physically and mentally, we
can state that his cell was neat and clean, was fur
nished with table and chairs, and had about it every
evidonce that he had been well cared for. ou his
table lay a large copy' of the bible, and the follow
ing other books: "An alarm to unconverted sin
ners, a serious treatise on conversation," Dili
tatiou of Christ," and " Robins' outline of History."
In the last book named we noticed a mark in a par
ticular place, and on turning to it we found on page
139 a passage which, from the thumb marks about
it, we judged Hugh had been studying. It was in
reference to the suicide of Cato, speaking of lie
coolness, stoicism, and firmness, all of which, it ap
pears, were peculiar and striking charaoteristics of
Corrigan. Dr. A. T. Ring, a Professor in one of the
medical colleges of Philadelphia, and a gentleman
in whose scientific knowledge those who know him
have every confidence, informed As yesterday that
the brain was one of the largest and most peculiar
he had ever met with in his long practice. It weigh I
ed four pounds and five ounces, as near as could be
ascertained by the balances with which it was weigh
ed. While it was very large, the Doctor said it was
very badly located, mostly in the back part of hi: ,
head—the baser organs largely predominating.
intellectual faculties were good, but the moral were
wofully deficient. Amativeness, destructiveness ant
combativeness were very largely developed, as was
also firmness, but conscientiousness was very small.
He had the cunning to plan a villainy. the nerve to
carry it out, but no conscience to restrain him.
When we left., the contents of his stomach had not
been analysed fully, but enough, we believe, had
been ascertained to enable the physicians to conclude
that oxalic acid was the poison used. How he came
by it is:still a mystery. The idea is that little Mary,
a bad character, on whose account it is said Hugh
killed his wife, was in to see him on Friday evening
last, and from that it was thought by some in this
vicinity that she had conveyed it to him. The peo
ple in Greensburg say this is not so, but that he
must have got It while he was here. There are myr
twits about this whole affair that will only be satis
factorily cleared on that day when the secrets of all
hearts are laid bare.

TIM RTY.POURTH CONGRESS
FIRST SESSION.
Wesuptorow, July 21. —Senate.—The Senate took
up and passed the bill amendatory of the act of
December, 1792, concerning the registering and re
cording of ships ur vessels, the object being to make
it conform to the present regulations of the Navy
departmen I.
On motion of Mr. Hale a resolution was adopted
rolling on the President for information whether any
inetruutione have been issued to any military officer
in command in Kansas to disperse any unarmed
meeting of the people of the Territory, or preventing
by the military power, any assemblage of the peo
ple of the Territory.
The Senate amended the bill for armaments, forti
fications, the alteration of small arms &c., reducing
the proposed appropriation from three millions to
$1,800,000, which was passed by a vote of 2.7 against
10.
A resolution 'RAP passed providing for a close of
the session on the 7th of August.
The Senate passed bills regulating fees, costs and
other judicial expenses of Government throughout
the Vnited States; also making appropriations for
the improvement of Delaware Breakwater, of certain
harbors in Maine and harbors in Marquettee in
Michigan and Mantowa in Wisconsin.
The Senate then adjourned,
HoN.e.—The House proceeded to the consideration
of the Nebraska contested election case. The Com
mittee on Election reporting that Byrd B. Chapman
was not, and that Hiram P. Bennet was, elected del
egate. . .
Mr. Watson made a speech in favor of the resolu
tion, and the subject was passed over.
The daily hour for meeting was changed from 12
to 11 o'clock.
Humphrey Marshall, from the Committee of .Ju
dielery, reported a bill to eetablish an uniform rule of
oaturallzenon. Referred to committee of the whole
,0 the sinto ifthe Union.
Mr. Smith, of l'ennessee, moved a suspension of the
rules, with a view to action on the Senate Resolution,
Just received, to adjourn on the lith of August.
Mr. Dunn sail he should mdse to amend it by ad
ding us a condition that on or before that day an act
he passed and receive the executive sanction for the
settlement of the troubles in Kansas, containing
among its provisions one for the re-establishment of
the slavery restriction applicable to Kansas and No.
bras k a.
Ir. Meacham gave notice of a substitute for a re
eess un the Atli of Augut to the 20th of October, pro
vided nu extra mileage or per diem be paid.
Mr. Smith's motion prevailed by 120 against 48.
Dr. lone :coved to table the resolution, which 'no
tion was loft by 54 against 105.
Mr. Campbell, of oltio, moved an amendment sub
stituting the 2d of September, showing that it was
impossible to transact business before that time.
Mr. Haven said that thc remedy was to fix an early
day, and then to go industriously to work. He com
mented on the manner in which so much valuable
time had boon wasted. As to Kansas, he believed a
tuojority of the House would pass a bill providing for
r,,toration of the Missouri restriction, knowing, at
the . awe time, that the SCllate would reject it.
Mr. Meacham said that Mr. Haven had nu rjght to
make a speech impugning the motives of other mem
bers.
Mr. Haven diyelsimed such an intention.
Mr. Greenwood sug,ge•ted the I sth day of August,
saying that three weeks were bog enough for prne•
tical purposes.
Mr. Giddings timught us weeks were no good as
two 'llona,. Ile dissented from Mr. Haven, and
would do what was right without inquiring whether
the t , enate would agree or noL
Mr. Haven replied that he would do what was right,
Mit when he could not get other men to do what W3ll
right he would abate a little rather than that his fel
low.citizens of Kansas should continue to bleed, and
rather than go before the country with an offer to
the Senate not made with sincerity.
Mr. Giddings said that Mr. Haven had been all
session in fi nding out which site was wrong; in
tead of asking himself whether the act to be per
fumed was just, he brought here the bugbear of the
Sow he. Mr. U., would act right, though
the Ile:lvens fall.
Mr. Dunn said he came here wltb high expecta
tions, a voice- -No doubt of that.,) that the Missouri
Compromise would be restored. lie was exceedingly
sorry that they had grown smaller and smaller un•
tal they were entirely dissipated. Ile was persuaded
that tio effort would be made to restore it. There
