'Board had a fifth hearing yesterday of tamer!-
. atriums against granting t license to S. P. More •
bead at Tarentum. -The counsel for remonstrant
-wee , A. M. Polloek, for defendant, John R. Large.
t he objection rained, was the bad character of the
applicant, as well as the ill-repute of his house. No
deeishin heard, been given, but it is not likely to be
, favorable to the petitioner. The following testimony
was elicited yesterday :
Mr ; Clark, sworn—Know Morehead personally ;
kit*hitnaUumbar of times; public opinion is against
life' Aimee ; he never has Wnn member of the Meth
trdist Church since he came to the place; I am re
eordlng etewnrt of the Methodist Church in that dr
aft; hit notes is not on the record of membership of
the church ; a number of complaints were made
against his house against his giving liquor to
young men who rode back and forth between his
bona° and campground; those young men behaved
disorderly manner.
Mr. Scott, sworn—l live in borough of Tarentum,
Sad am acquainted with Mr. Morehead ; live near
his house; know it; have many times seen drunken
persons about his bombe • seen my own son; have
seen Morehead intoxicated; have seen him in a great
patsion sometimes ; this was when he was sober ;
never saw-boys drinking at the house; seen David
t Tenes there; never saw Morehead exhibit any bade
colit:Coladect in his house; have seen Dougherty get
liquor there and seen him drunk at home; Dougher
tyis an habitual drunkard; seen card playing at the
house; can't say what was played for; names play -

inon,gomplain of the children getting liquor at hie
house; my son spends hie money that be should make
o better use of, at house of applicant; never seen
any person in sitting room drunk.

Meeting of the Hortieultural Society.—The Horti•
.ticriltnral Society held a special meeting yesterday
forenoon, to consider the propriety of holding their
&all exhibition in connexion with the Fair of the
-State Agricultural Society. The following member=
- were in attendance: Messrs. McKnight, Reed, r •
bangle, Lockhart and Coffin. After a desultory con
versation among the members, in which the propri
ety of the measure was canvassed, Mr. Harbaugh
moved that the Society hold its fall exhibition in
connexion with the Fair of the State Agricultural
Society. Adopted.
Mr. Reed moved that a committee be appointed to
confer with a committee recently chosen by the State
Agricultural Society on the subject, and make ar
rangements for the exhibition.
The motion was adopted, and the following gen
tlemen appointed to serve on the committee: Meson , .
Reed, Lockhart, Coffin, Knox and King.
,The committee were instructed to make the test
possible arrangements with the State Society, and
use every effort to secure a proper building or tent
for the exhibition of the flowers, plants and vegeta
bles, of the county Society.

Arrest,' for rooliterfettng.—An individual named
John White, residing on Penn street in the Fifth
Ward, was arrested and taken before Alderman Wil
son yesterday, charged with passing a counterfeit
$5 bill on the Mechanics' Bank of the city and
county of Philadelphia. It is a well executed coun
terfeit, the only difference from the genuine observa
ble being the absence of a few flourishes over the
word "Phil." and under the word Five." and the
light shading of the bank building steps on the le.t
tad. White is a clerk in Wm. B. Hays' store on
Liberty street. Ile was held in $5OO bail to answer.

Miller charged violent and indecent language against
Margaret Schefa. She further believed herself to be
in personal :danger. The belligerent Mrs. S. was

wherein Mary Mesenheimer swore that one Peter
Ritobers threatened to shoot herself and children if
they passed by his door. Believing herself to be
in danger, she wade the above information.
Disorderly Houae.—Yesterday, on oath of Benj.
T. 'Ring, High Constable, a man named John Henry
Feldctian, who lives in the Fourth ward, just below
the U. S. Hotel, was arrested by Witmer Baer, on a
warrant issued by Alderman Parkinson, for keeping
a disorderly house. A friend of John Henry'',
named B. Auth, entered bail for his appearance at
tihe n ext Quarter Sessions, in the sum of $5OO, and
so the matter rests at present.
We called the attention of our readers yesterday
to the sale of that beautiful property adjoining t.,

the Outer Depot, and we can't do them a greater

WAstritrurou, July 18.—Senate--The Senate, after
passing the bill to repeal the law antbittrising the
erection of an armory in Washington, proceeded to
the row , iteration of private bills.
The Senate discussed. without coming to a con
clusion the bill extending Obed fluency's patent for
a Reaping Machine.
Mr. Yulee reported a bill providing for a compul
sory pre payment of postage on all transient printed
matter.
//,,o.s.—The House resumed the consideration of
the Illinois contested election case. Mr. Archer, the
contestant, addressed the House on behalf of his
right to a seat.
The House debated the resolution declaring that
Mr. Allen was not entitled to his seat., which was
adopted by a vote of 94 against 90.
The resolution that Mr. Archer was entitled to a
seat was rejected by 89 against 91.
Efforts were toads to reconsider the last vote but
they were lost by 4 majority.
The resolution declaring that a vacancy exists in
the 7th Congressional district of Illinois, and re
ferring the election back to the people, and giving
Mr. Archer, the contestant, mileage and per diem to
date was passed, and the House adjourned.

Bo<ToN, July 17.—The Whig State Central Com
mittee of Massachusetts, have issued an address re
commending the Whigs of that State to avoid nom
tnitti g themselves at present to either of the candi
dates in nomiuution, and urging a thorough organi
zati in with a view to the concentration of their
strength hereafter, if found necessary, upon that
one ~ 1 the present candidates who shall appear most
unobjectionable to their principles. The address
close= with the averment that the trot great Whig
principle is unwavering fidelity to the Union and the
Constitution.
Nawllk, July la.—A fire occurred at Newark,
N. J., this afternoon. At the latest accounts 24
houses were in ruins, and the fire was still raging.
