(the initial for Ass) alleges, Bay that "Senator Wilson declared hie preference for Johnston," but that it was so reported. Now the fact that this report appeared in at least two of our morning papers, the per sonal relation between whose editors forbids the idea of any possible collusion between them, shows of itself that such a report was current. As for the question whether Senator Wilson did or did not so express himself, the reporter has noth ing to do with it ; but there are leading Ameri cans, gentlemen of veracity in this city, who, if Senator Wilson himself denies it, are prepared to come out over their own signatures and say that he sltsf express his preference for Johnston IN THEIR ritetinucs. As for the denial that "great ri valry" existed between the friends of Dayton and those of Johnston, as to which should get up the largest meeting, none but a " donkey " would deny a fact so notorious. [9th Chmnsandmenl. The editor of the Casette is a professing Chris tian, yet he does not scruple to tell 3 falsehood for the purpose of slandering his neighbor, when he wishes to gratify his malignity. For instance, the reporter of the Associated Press, at the re quest of some of the members of the American Exe&tive Committee of Allegheny county, trans mitted a telegraphic dispatch stating rim FACT that said Committee had resolved unanimously to support Fillmore and Donelson. The editor of the Gazette, according to his own showing in yesterday morning's paper, knew of the exis tence of that Committee, yet he attempted to ig nore it for the purpose of assailing the reporter as a falsifier and pronouncing his dispatch " lie cut out of the whole cloth." In this he was guilty of a double meanness totally incompatible with the religious character he wishes to assume: he now adds to his turpitude by assailing the young gentleman, the Secretary of the Commit tee, who has certified officially to the truth of the reporter's dispatch, and he is endeavoring to wriggle himself out of his difficulty by adding a tissue of other falsehoods. The " lad," of whom he so sneeringly speaks, has been a legal voter for some years, and occupies the official position in the Committee which he claims: this the edi tor cannot deny; but to refute all the falsehoods perpetrated by the Gazer, wcJid be useless la bor, as its character is now pretty well known. The assertion, however, that the telegraph re. porter is the mouth-piece of the editor of the Post is untrue; the dispatches in question were written out and sent without any consultation with the editor of the Post, as thus falsely insin uated. The Gazstie impudently, as well as igno rantly, claims that the American Executive Coin mittee of Allegheny county, "is the one that met in this city on the sth of July and endorsed Fremont and Johnston, - and that the one which endorsed Fillmore and lionelson - is the " Native American Executive Committee. - Now the Gazt:te has exactly got the •' hoot on the wrong leg The Fillmore section is the olde.t branch of the American organizations, and claims the title " American party, - by prece dente and right. And give me leave to say to you, the people are ready to do 1 this work, and are only kept from it by the 'cool. headed' management of political leaders. Only let the capitalists of the North furnish the means and the men are ready to fight this propagandi zing Government at. once upon its good behavior. The German Press on the Presidency 'rhe Detroit Advertiser of yeaterda7 morning published a list, from the Cincinnati Commer cial, of German newspapers printed in the Uni ted States showing their political position in the present canvass. The whole number of papers given is 111, of whom 54 are set down for Fre mont, 53 for Buchanan, and 4 undecided. The Buffalo Demokrat and Weltbeurger gives a fuller and more accurate list, showing that, of 115 Ger man newspdpers, 62 are for Buchanan, 43 for Fremont, and 10 neutral or doubtful. The Buf falo Courier is informed by a German editor, well posted in this matter, that the German democrat ic papers published in New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Columbus and Milwaukee, very greatly exceed in circulation those of the republican stamp, and that only in Chicago and St Louis the circulation of German republican papers predominates ; and that it may be assumed that, while in actual numbers the German demooratic papers stand to the Ger man republican as two to one, the actual circu lation of the former is, at least, lits three or four to one of the latter. ~.. ; fi r `= ^ .~~,~ el.~w~;.;p~: [From the Evening Bulletin, of ThmooMy.) APPALLING DISASTERII Collision on the North Penusylva- AN EXCURSION TRAIN WRECKED NEARLY FIFTY LINES LOST About nine u . CI `2k this morning, the appalling in telligence reached t...c c'!y that a collision had oc curred upon the North Pennsylvania Railroad, be tween the regular morning train from Gwynedd and an excursion train that left the city at five o'clock this morning, with a large party of school children, with their teachers, Sic. The particulars, so far as we have been able to glean them from reliable resources, are as follows: At five o'clock this mo-ning a special train of ten cars left the Master etree. Depot, with the schools of St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church in Kensing ton. The excursion party consisted of between five and nix hundred persons, the great majority of whom were children. They intended proceeding to Fort Washington, fourteen and a half miles from the city, where they were to enjoy a pie nit.. Owing to the number of ears, and the weight of the train, there was some delay ; and the conductor, Mr. Alfred F. iloppel, finding himself behind time, pushed forward with great rapidity when towards the end of his trip. The regular passenger train for the city left Uwyn. edd at 6 o'clock, and reached Camp Hill at 6 o'clock and IS minutes. Finding the excursion train had nut yet arrived, Mr. Win. Vanstavoren, the conduc tor, determined not to wait for it; and his train was moving along when the expected train came thun• dering un around a curve, at the rate of 35 miles an hour. A eollisiou of course ensued, with the most appalling nunSeqUenOes. The down train escaped without serious damage; but the scene presented by the excursion train was fearful. The three forward earn of the train were crueheil completely to pieces, and the wreck, ming ling with that of the loeornotive, took fire, and the flames communicated to the other ears of the train. The two ears neat after the three that wore wrecked outright, took fire, and were entirely coesumed. The inmates of the three forward ears were com pletely mixed up with the wreck, and a large num ber of them were killed outright. There were pro bably fifty persons In each of the three oars, and the lowest estimate we beard fix the number of killed at fifty, while it was feared the dread aggregate would reach ..sr Atandreqi. When our informant left the spot, every effort was being made to rescue the wounded and the bodies of the dead from the wreck. Everything was in the wildest confusion, and it was of coarse impossible, under the circumstances, to arrive with any certainty at the number of the victims, or to pretend to ob tain any pattleulers as to their names. Mr. Hoppel. the conductor. escaped with very little injury. Harry Harris. the engineer of the excursion train, was cut to pieces and killed Instantly, and John Ragan., the fireman, is among the maniug, and it is believed he as under the wreck. A row of men was at once formed and buckets used to extinguish the flames, but they were unsuc cessful. A large number of persons were taken from the wreck, slightly bruised, who made hair breadth escapes from being burned to death. The farmers in the vicinity rendered every assist-' once in their power, except one man, who demanded $lO for a wagon to go a mile for a physician. Among those particularly active were Mr. Charles. P. Wentz, Mr. C. Spencer and Mr. Wm. Sheets. The locomotive Cohockeink, under charge of Mr. Wm. Shafts, Superintendent of Motive Power, went up at 10 o'clock, and brought down a portion of the dead and wounded. The scene, upon the arrival at Master street, beg gars description—the fathers and mothers and rela tives of the excursionists having assembled there to the number of 2000, to learn the result of the dread ful catastrophe. o.fficers Charles Burns, John McCourt, john Sal ior and others of the Seventeenth Ward, went up and rendered every assistance in their power. Mr. John H. Ainsworth, the Superintendent of the baggage department, was on the down traip, but escaped uninjured. He made an almost superhuman effort to rescue those in the burning care, and was particularly attentive to the wounded. Mr. Stephen A. Winslow, one of the most efficient reporters of the Philadelphia press, was a passenger' in the down train, but escaped without injury. STATEMENT OF we. WM. swine. Mr. Wm. The people around the neighborhood hastened to the dreadful scar-e, and by every means in their power assisted in the relief of the wounded. Fortu nately, there was a quantity of ice and ice-cream on the train ; this was given to the wounded, and it re freshed them greatly. Doctors Jacoby, Egbert and Smith, of Chestnut Hill, and Dr. Newburry, of White Marsh, were among the physicians who were early upon the spot and who did everything in their power to assist the wounded. There was but one house in the immedi ate vicinity, and this was thrown open to the recep tion of the sufferers. As the train of baggage cars sent up from the city approached the spot, the scene beggared all descrip. don, some from the city who had friends on the ex cursion, jumped out before the train stopped, and sought their friends, who, too often, were dead or horribly mutilated. Their shreiks would mingle with those of the dying. Men left their work for miles around, and came to the spot and rendered all the assistance in their power. Many wore helping to re move the locomotive, under which were many bodies • the heat was so Intense that it was almost impossible to render any assistance to those in the ruins. The Congress Engine and Ilooe Company, of Chestnut Hill, arrived on the ground about 9 o'clock ; and began to play on the fire. Among those known tu be dead were the foil °win , : Father Sheridan, (but not yet recognized); Jutner Mcintyxe, adult; John Bradley, adult; Margaret Meany, aged 10; Hugh Campbell, aged 10: Wm.
