FRIDAY MORNING
Liberty or Death !--Probably the Latter!
It was announced at the Republican meeting, in
the American Yard, on Tuesday evening, that a Fre
mont and Dayton gathering would be held on Thurs
day nlght for the purpose of forming a Club. To
cult persons of all complexions, the amiable Thomas
M. Marshall afterwards changed the call to a Fre
mont meeting, leaving out fintirely the vexed ques
tion of the Vice Presidency. In obedience to this
mandate, one hundred and sixty-nine men and boys
(feeling sure that the opposition press would repre-
sent it as a tremendous outpouring, we had a friend
to carefully count the crowd, with the above result;)
assembled at Franklin Hall. Mark the consequence.
The Know Nothings outnumbered their God and
Liberty brethren two to one, and consequently had
two-thirds of the speakers, who lugged in an im
mense deal about the American flag, Gov. Johnston
and other outside issues nut embraced in Mr. Mar
shall's call.
The first speaker w.s..s 0. 11. Rippey, (a Know
Nothing and a candidate for District Attorney,)
who made a speech of moderate length and of nut by
any means immoderate ability. Ile in turn was fol
lowed by E. D. tiazzaut, a gentleman who rarely

reeks office, but now, at the solicitation of nutnerous
friends, offers himself for nomination as the Repub
lican candidate for Senator, with the most gloomy
prospects of success. The Doctur was " ray ther" se
o on the Know Nothings in some of his remarks,
which were received with tho most ominous silence.
However, Mr. Thomas Howard, (Know Nothing
candidate for Congreas,i !node it all right in his
speech, which followed. We think his chances for
the nomination are improving each day. If Mr.
Howard can have an opportunity to deliver a few
more such able harangues that he let off last night,
Le will undoubtedly be the nominee by acclamation.
Merit will have its reward. It will be impossible to
keep, for any considerable time, such a burning and
a shining light hid under a bushel.
But seriously, it the Opposition don't offer better
speaking than that presented last evening and on
Friday night, the unterritied Democracy will drive
them into the sea without an effort. Such stale plot
itddes and pointless jokes as those perpetrated lust
evening were entirely disgraeeful to a party making
any pretensions to talent among its members. \VS
submit, too, whether promiscuous stamping upon the
floor is not a species or bogus enthusiasm that ail!
prove uncurrent before the campaign is over. A
filiall knot of individuals who evidently went there
with their applause bottled up ready for any emer
gency applauded must inopportunely, sometimes in
terrupting the speaker when about to tell on old ioo,
or again waking a terrible clatter when a story bad
been told, without the least application to the sub
ject at issue.
