SIXTH ANNUAL EXHIBITION
PENNSYLVANIA
STATE AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY,

On SEPTEMBER 30th, and on
OCTOBER Ist, 2d and 3d, 1856.

Three thousand dollars worth of goods stolen—The
thief arrested.—A man named Peabody was arrested
in this city yesterday on a charge of stealing up
wards of three thousand dollars worth of goods from
Hardy & Co. house in New York. It appears the
individual was in the employ of the firm uutil a
fortnight past, when he was discharged.
Soon after, on taking an account of stock, the
above amount of goods were missing, but they could
ascertain nothing about the matter until Friday,
When they got a dispatch from Love B:os., of this
city, stating that a lot of goods were here and offered
for the sum of $2,500.
Mr. Hardy immediately came en and arrived in
the 2 A. M. train yesterday and took the proffered
owner into custody. He was lodged in jail until this
morning when he is to have an examination. He
had been stopping at the Monongahela House where
he-registered himself Henry H. Palmer.
An Imporiont Propoeiti.n.—lt is known that for a
number of years the steamboat interest of this city
has paid a large sum annually ton company in rt.
Louis, for the use of a couple of " wrecking boats."
with submarine machinery attached, used in raising
the balks and freight on sunken steamers. These
St. Louis wreckers, we are credibly informed, are of
rather an inferior character, but being the nearest at
band, we have been compelled to make a virtue of
necessity ii using them. A proposition is now be
fore the Pit - .A , Board of Underwriters whi if
adopted, will obviate the necessity is the i'n:tire. Mr.
J. H. Doyle proposes to build sue of these ~team
vassals used in raising wrecks, put in the proper kind
of submarine armor, Se., of a superior character to
that now used; and at a comparatively small cost.
Mr. Doyle has been Master Mechanic at the Pensa
cola Navy Yard for a number of years, and has nu
merous testimonials front the right quarter of his high
character as an ingenious - machinist and engineer.
And furthermore, to show his own confidence in
what be proposes, Mr. Doyle idlers to put into the en
terplthia what capital he can command. We hope the
Board of Underwriters will give the matter a thor
ough investigation, and if they find (es is most prob
able,) the proposition will work advantageously to
the interests of our ricer Ifaile, that they will en
courage it by all means in their power.
Fanny Fern re. the cook u the U. c. Die.
triet Court for Eastern Pennsylvania, the ease of
James Pard, Sarah Payson Parton against William
Fleming, came up on Friday. It was an an appli.
cation for a special injunction to restrain II e de•
fondant from printing, publishing, and circulating a
"Cook Book" purporting to he prepared and publish
ed by "Fanny Fern." Mrs. Parton alleges that she
la the "Fanny Fern :" and that all her writings are
published under that name, and that she has ac
quired a special and the only right to use it : that
the defendant has published a "Cook Soak," calling
it "Fanny Fern's," and purporting to be prepared
by her; that she had nothing whatever to do with
the said book ; that the said "Cook Book - is a mere
ordinary selection of receipts for kitchen use: that
the preface Is an attempted imitation of her style :
that it is ungramatical, vulgar, and somewhat
obscene; and that the said "rook Book" will injure
the character of the complainant, t Mrs. Parton,
will lessen the value of her title, I•• Vanny Fern,
and will inflict groat pecuniary los+ upon her. A
_ .. 2peoial Injunction to restrain respondent, as prayed
for, with leave to the defendant w mo‘e to titssolt
on forty-eight hour's notiro to the eetnplato—ut..
