Worn out with dread, he went tolholgarelia,ll of

his remorse good for anything, he had hotter set
to work and earn the money he had OriMirdilly
got and spent, and pay the Bank and these his
had swindled ; that would be better every way
than going to the penitentiary. But Howard
was resolute to be arrested. The officer wrote
to this city, and a requisition was procured, iipon

THE GREAT EARTHQUAKE. IN THE Mrsstssirst
VALLES.—Many persons had been deterred from
going to Illinois by the erroneus impression that
the country was subject to volcanio action.- This
had originated from the great earthquake of
1811, by which the Valley of the.Misaissippl - had
been greatly shaken, the shocks having continued
for nearly three months. The country jest be
low the month of the Ohio river would seam to
have been near the centre of the agitation. For
miles the land had ,been seamed with ; yarrning
chairett , and deep - Notes, the remains or-Which are
still visible. The bluff on which Now_Madrid
had been built had sunk to the level of the river;
and had become soon afterward totally sub
merged. The commotion in the Mississippi had
been very great ; the banks had caved in, islands
had dissolved, and the channel had become
changed. At every shook the sueface of the
river had risen and fallen like the waves of the
sea. An eye-witness, who was coming down on
a flat-boat, says : " After escaping many dan
gers, my boat suddenly swung round in the con
flicting currents, and rapidly shot up the river.
Looking ahead, i beheld the mighty Mississippi
cut in twain, and pouring down a vast opening
into the bowels of the earth. A moment more
and the chasm filled; but the strong sides of the
flatboat were crumbled to pieces in the convul
sive effort of the flood to obtain its wonted level."
The Indians had been utterly bewildered by. the
earthquake, and could account for the physical
tumult only upon the supposition that things
generally had been getting drunk. It is said of
ane of them, who had given himself up for lo it,
that, upon being questioned as to what the mat
ter was, he had replied, while at too same time
pointing fearfully to the heavens, "Great Spirit,
whisky too much :"—Ferris' Sta!eo and Trrrito
rieq of the West.
American matter=—or rather manners—have
again been in everybody's mouth. The exciting
cause was a contretmps that happened at the
Queen's levee. Divested of the on tra geonsedag •
gerations the facts are sivaply these, that Mr.
Dallas, accompanied by a friend, went to the
Queen's levee ; the friend's costume was not in t
accordance With the regulations, end beth gee'
tlemen, Mr. Dallas and friend, reit/med . to the
embassy in Harley street. Out 'of this incident
the London Times found material for a savage
onslaught upon American manners. As usual,
the minor presses took up the cry, and for, at
least two days, Mr. Dallas labored under the
imputation of having put a studied affront upon
the Queen. Of course, an immense deal of pa
triotic wrath was unnecessarily wasted on this
head. -
One hundred and fifty thousand troops are to
he assembled at 'Moscow, to assist at the Czar's
coronation.
FLEMING BROS.
The itussian government has sent a contribu
lion for the relief of the sufferers from inunda
tion in France.
The Independence Beige says :--lt is said that
an interview will take place at no remote period
between the Emperors of France and Austria.
We know that the former of these sovereigns is
going.toPlombieres, and it is asserted that on
leaving he will visit the Castle of Artmenberg,
in Switzerlend, where he was brought up, and
from thence will proceed to a frontier town,
where he will meet with Francis Joseph."'
A Goon SOGGESTION.—A correspondent of the
National Intel4encer suggests that if the Decla
ration of Independence and Washingtcro'S Fare
well Address were to be solemnly read konvery
family in the country on the anniversary of the
Declaration, there would be a dimunition ef po
litical strife, less party animosities, and probably
the restoration °Vac, brotherly national senti
ments aad feelings which characterized the "im
mortal signers." Whenever the Declaration is
read, so should be read that incomparable paper,
the Farewell Address of the Father of his Coun
try. And in this connexion it may not be %ap
propriate to allude to the warnings of Washington,
at a timo when his name is mentioned In Parlia
ment in terms most befitting, and mentioned too
by Lord John Russel, who is unquestionably a
man of peace.
So late as the 16th of June last we find a British
nobleman speaking of gen. Washington,.-and
approving what all his countrymen have said of
him, that he was a man of "remarlcable wisdom,
calmness and firmness." My Lord John ithonld
have added unparalleled sagacity . ; for time has
demonstrated that his admonitions could. not
have been improved even if he had lived till a
portion of the public men of his country apem to
he beside themselves on some qubstions 'Which
still render uneasy some of the plain: people of
the country.
The Republic is safe, albeit agitators, conspira
tors, and disunioniats. But it is remarkable
that, whilst discussions were taking pla:Ce in the
