INVENTIONS AND PATENTmf
U. F. FAVazi,E8.1.:.....
Dear Sir,—HavingmmdO, Trott'e "Patent Oil Globe" on
eilniost aLf the ett*eigit4 furrilehed the last year, and in
asmuch aithey appear to have given entire satisfaction to
our customers, we haw uohesitation in recommending them
as a good article, and. much preferable on account of their
simplicity, of construction, to the old faehioned Oil Olobee, or
any other of which we have any knowledge
This certifies that the Oil Cup patented by Mr. Trott, has
been in use on our road for two years past. We find it te
be
an economical and durable Oil Cup, and can recommend it
as such. ORO. W. DRIER,
Foreman of Pittsburgh Shop of Penna. Central RR.

•
To Si. F. R&TON,
This certifies that we have had in use the penult Oil Glob.
or Cups, sold by Moses P. Eaton, hail, of Pittsburgh, and
consider them very much superior to any thing of the kind
we have ever used. ALFRED THOMAS,
Treasurer Ohio Tool Company.

From the New York Scientific American.)
Patent Finishing Plane.
This invention is intended for use where it is desired to im
part a line, smooth, and glossy surface to Caw wood; but it is
applicable, with advantage, to all kind of carpenter's planes.
The novelty consists in placing the cutting chiael. or bit, in
front of the wedge, Instead of behind, min common planes;
also in applying a metallic mouth-piece to the face of the
plane, in front of the chisel, which mouth piece serves as the
rest for the chisel, and confines the throat of the plans.
But the mouth piece is so close fo, the edge of the bit as to
present the plane from ripping or splintering the wood In
the least degree. Indeed, we have seen the implement ap
plied to the planing of wood against the grain, and trans
venally to the grain, tearing the wood perfectly smooth. So
pm foct Is the operation of this instrument, that it may be ap
plied to the planing of veneers—with entire encores---a
thing which cannot safely be done by the common plane.
The peculiar arrangoment of the mouth piece, bit, and
wedge, affords a complete and firm bearing for the bit
thrsughout Its whole length, and dispenses, under all cir
cumstances, with the use of a asp or double let.
This is a very simple and effective improvement, destined,
we have no doubt, to find its way intoevery carpenter's shop
In the land. No tool chest is complete without it. The in
ventor is Wm. C. hopper, of Pitteburuh, Pa., and his patent
bears date January 16, 1855.
