Tue BILL OF PEACE.—The principal objection
urged by the Abolitionists to the bill for the set
lenient of the Kall,llS difficulties, and which Las
passed the menet, by a very large vote, is that
the free -t ate men have been frightened out of
the territory during the late disturbance,. This
is all a mi,talce. An amendment was offered i•v
Mr. Douglas and adopted, by which u'l iino
who have been thus driven out of the territor,
may return at any time before - the I at of October,
and, upon declaring that they return fur the pur
pose of permanent residence, the Commis3ioners
shall put their names upon the lit of voters, and
they will be allowed to vote. Thus that objec
tion is entirely overcome. What further übjec-
tion can be made to the bill we arc at it lo9i,
imagine
We are glad to see that there are signs that
the bill will pass the Ilu'use t 0,,, a. we!l as the
Senate. Damaging as the bill is ti, the cause
that can only he sustained by agitation and ex
citement, this bill of peace and repose is , 0 f a i r
and just and necessary that the abolitionists will
hardly dare attempt its defeat. If they do defeat
it, the base act will do them infinitely more harm
than the passage of the bill would do. The pe o .
pie would sternly rebuke the defeat of such a bill
for a mere electioneering purpose.
BEAVER Ci,t NTV.—Tile nomination of R. G.
M'Oregur for the Senate in Beaver county was
well received by the Democracy. Mr. M'Gregor
is editor of the Beaver Star, and labors earnestly
in the great cause of his party and the country.
His paper is doing much good, and he would
make an efficient Senator. But we are not yet
assured that he desires the nomination, and he
may withdraw in favor of some other candidate.
But whether a candidate or not the editor of the
Star has enlisted in good earnest for the war.
IT Ts stated by a European correspondent of
the North American, that Italy and Austria may
soon be convulsed by a great democratic revo-

The New York Independent, a so called '•reli
gious paper," edited by the Rev. Henry Ward
Beecher, of Sharps' rifle notoriety, announces
that the Ind.-pendent will hereafter he devoted to
the advocacy of " free soil" and the election of
" Free-mont. - This follows as a natural se
quence to the violent phillipics from the pulpit
in which that gentleman has indulged for some
time past—having prostituted his pulpit to the
ignoble purpo:es of sectional partyism and trea
son he haw, to use his own words, "counted the
cost,•' and is now ready to prostitute the reli
gious press over which he has control, to the
same base object. The Philadelphia Ledurr, one
of the most influential independent papers in the
United States, makes the following sensible re
marks upon this announcement :
"If teachers of religion wish to dabble in the dirty
pool of politics, they need not expert to escape with
out their vesture being soiled. There are partisan
editors who are more than a match for thein in in
temperate speech and bad language, and who will
not let them take refuge behind their sasred “ffi-e to
save them from the consequences of bating volunta
rily entered into such a contest. The effect will not
be to discredit religion. for that rests on indestructi
ble Principles, hut it will he to lessen very much the
influence of those who protess to teach it. It will
show that they bare the common weaknesses of hu
manity, and are liable to its couinion errors, mistakes
and infirmities, an impression which "nee continued
by the abundant evidence a political contest will af
ford, will go far to lower teachers of religion from the
exalted position they should occupy in the public
estimation, and which they sustain from the com
monly entertained notion of their superior sanctity."

" FRIACI.ONI A CRINEE Al. kINAT DEMOCRACT.—In
s,me parts of the north the Buchanan party

Kansas as a free State but the Pittsburgh Pie

every man a traitor to Democracy who favors the
admission of that State with a free Constituto.n.

We publish the above extract from the

burgh Ga:etle, to show how infamous a story it
can tell. It is wekknown that the 15• s: has
uniformly expressed the wish and the confident
belief that Kansas would be a free state. We
believe so yet if the Sharp.' rifle excitement does
not drive all free Ante men out of the territrry•
But the above extract is merely produced
sample of the truthfulness of our abolition op
ponent?.
With all our contemporaries who preserve a

GEN. ('Acs ON RIFLE RELIGION -Gen Cro.:c, in
a letter to a committee at Boston, who had invited
him to attend the Buchanan ratification meeting
iu that city, wrote :
Our nominees are worthy of our confidence,
and, besides their personal claims, they are the
representatives of that great party of Washing
ton, and Jefferson, and Jackson, which knows no
country but the whole country, and no people
but the whole American people; and which
believes that if every portion of the republic
were left to manage its affairs in its own way,
without external interference, and if more chari
ty and less virulence were :-. , .hibitcd—more of
the Gospel Jesus Christ and less of sharps'
rifles issued from the arsenals of some of the
churches—that the good old days of peace and
fraternal regard would soon return to cheer the
land."
FUSION AND INSANITY.—There a rare simi
larity of character among the fusion lion. just
now. Lane and Moreau have both been duel
, lets : but neither one has been shot or ever shot
his man. They have both been the recipient. of
Democratic honors, and have both turned traitor
to their parent party. They have both been in
sane, and we believe they are yet. They are
both married men, and have both separated from
their wives. They both have children and they
both leave them with the mothers without pro
viding for their support. They are both stamp
ing the State in parts where they are least known
under the pay of the fusion Anti-Democratic
party.—Eransville (Ind.,) Enquirer.

A NI ERICA. —lt is not as yet generally known that
the 'Tibet goat from whose wool the famous
Cashmere shawls are made, has been introduced
successfully into the lotted States. This enter
prising undertaking was achieved, a few years
since, after many difficulties. by Pr. J. B. Davis.
of Columbia, S. C., at that time employed by the
I Ittoman Porte, in experimenting on the growth of
cotton, in the Sultan's .lominions. LR. Davi,
succeeded, at vast expen , e, in securing eleven of
the Nye breed, which. on his way home he.ex
hibited in London and Paris. Since that period,
the goat has been introduced from South Carolina
into Tennessee, where it is said to thrive. The
value of a flock may be estimated from the fact
that no yea: Thibet goat has ever been sold for
less than a thousand dollars. This enormous
price, moreover, i, not a Spe . culative one, for no
fleeced animal has wool of such fineness, softness
and durability. The wool of all the Thibet goats
in Tennessee, for esample, has been engaged, at

GRACE BEFORE kiiiAT.—A friend in Vegas is
responsible for the following.—t• une of our
stock raisers, in hunting some cattle on a cloudy
day, not long since, got bewildered and lost in
the prairie: the weather came on stormy and
thick, so tie could not tell what course to take,
and wandered about three days without a mouth
ful to eat. About noon on the third day, 4
cleared up a little, and he struck out for a house
he saw a long ways off. On reaching it, and
making known his hungry condition, the house
holder—who was a harems—ezpressed his warm
sympathies for him, and told him to sit down,
that dinner would be ready after awhile. When
dinner was announced, our hero,' suiting the
action to the word, was promptly in a seat, and
ar promptly began making himself perfectly at
home with whatever was within his reach. At
this crisis, the reverend gentleman of the house
interposed with, 'Stop' stop'—we are in the habit
of saying something here before we eat.' Our
hero filled his mouth nearly full, and without
stopping, or apparently noticing - what had been
said to him, replied, ' on, and say whatever
you please, you can't turn my Amid/ now. , '—,
