S. }Totted ilurdst —Co,or,r's Inquest.— Last even ing about 9 o'clock Coroner Alexander was called upon to hold an inquest on the body of a woman named Ann Hopkins, who lived with her husband, Patrick Hopkins, in a drinking and boarding house, on the corner of Fifth and Liberty streets. From the character of the inmates of the house, and the sudden death of the woman, it was suspected that violence had been used in getting her out of the way. A jury of twelve men were immediately sum moned and sworn, Mr. Charles Barnett acting as foreman, who proceeded to investigate the mystery. The first witness examined, James Hopkins, teeti lied that' the woman cooked dinner for the hoarders , of which he ate. She had a black eye, and the mark on her cheek at that time, but appeared well and sober; he did not notice the marks on her neck. At 4 , ) o'clock he said she appeared well and sober: he did not know her to drink anything all day ex cept some mineral water; be went to the Arsenal then, and returned about 6i ; he sat down at the dour, and heard nothing until about 7 o'clock, when some one told him the woman was dead. 119,954 100,000 00 The testimony of this vritnesg, as well as that of two or throe others that were examined, was not very satisfactory. About half-past ten o'clock the jury retired, leaving Doctors McDonald and Shaw to make an examination of the body, who, in a short time, appeared, were sworn, and testified as follows • Dr. Nesbit McDonald • - S2k id, that there was no idence of internal injury having been done the Liman, and that the marks about tier head and face did not indicate that she had been killed. Dr. Shaw corroborated Dr. McD , and stated that liquor was found in her stomach, from the use of which she probably came to her death. After hearing the evidence of the physicians, the jury found that Mrs. Ann Hopkins died from the use of intoxicating liquors. are the ?- We have been requested to call the attention cif the police to the large crowd of idle loafers and loungers who regularly, each even. lag, congregate rtn the steps of the Custom House, there to stare rudely at ladies passing by, and often to insult them by some vulgar jest, or other indecent language. They are fit subjects for the attention of His honor the Mayor. The steps of the Custom House is no place for men to loaf upon. particularly if they cannot observe the proprieties of life. r,mitiritter Rehinted.--The committee of citisens and soldiers, vrhu left this city for Chicago a few days since, to present a stand of colors from the Du ine:qte tireys to the Chicago Light Guards, returned yesterday. Mavonic Hull.—The Arctic voyages are winning golden opinions at each representation. Its rare merits are not to be lost on the public, for our citi zens are nightly crowding the Hall. We have fre quently visited it, and can find new features at each sitting, and It Is diffimlt to find language to express our admiration of this sublime achievement of Ameri can talent. It has many attractions, and they are appreciated. A Correspondent of the N. Y. Evening Poet de nounces Gen. Robinson, of this city, as having been opposed to consolidation of the several lines of Rail roads between this city and Chicago. This is, to our personal knowledge, a mistake. gen. Robinson was warmly in favor of the measure, and worked as en ergetically and earnestly for its accomplishment as any man in the community. Watchman K Wed. —A watchman on the Pennsyl vania Railroad, below Altoona, was run over and cut in two on Sunday night by the fast train coming west. He was apparently asleep across the track at the time of the catastrophe. As he had before made several narrow escapes of the same kind, it is thought probable he may have selected this mode of putting an end to his existence. Aggravated Assaults.-r-Two men named Terence Laughlin and John McClure appeared before Alder man Parkinson yesterday and made informations against John Freel, charging him with an aggravat ed assault with a slung shot.
