it „is just a, twelve--month ago (while on our
VEly to the Farm Scheel, at Zelienople,) that we
were requested to preach a sermon'in this plaCe.
AN there was no, church - of any denorainetioniin
the town, we met in thO car factory, and with a
work bench for our pulpit, we joyfally Preached
the gospel tat large and attentive congregation.
Owing to the strong desire expressed for similar
services } 1 another i appointment was inaile,. , and/
others still, ares 7 second Sunday, and thtliv we
hale " continued to-this day, witnessing both. to:
small and great," the precious doctrines); of the
oortmion salvation. What the effect has been is
xnaWn only to the searcher of all hearts. 'Some
results, however, are visible and they encourage
the hope of still greater good in the future. A
large and beautiful lot of ground was generously
presented by lii. T. C. Gculd, of Rochester, and
his associates in the Past, end upon this a band
some Gothic church, ninety-tWo feet in length,
with a tower, has, been erected for the use of - en ,

conteniPlated merely for the benefit of the Pent
laden of this embryo city, we think we Would '
have sufficient grounds to appeal to the benevos
tenos of our brethren at a distance ; for the
church is to be " free"
,alike to rich and perm,
without the embarraasment of pew rents : att,d.,,,
other restrictions, and many will hear the gospel,
in it whom poverty, principle, or prejudice
would keep away from other sanctuarlea: 'Hit
it lei designed al -, o for other classes, and among
these'are the struggling widow and her fatherless
children, together with the daughters .of the,
eh - nth, who in, after years may attend the
Setdnary, which it is proposed to establish in
thiSl place.
Through the liberality of two gentlemen, one
in Philadelphia and the other in Pittsburgh, we
have been enabled to purchase a beautiful farm
adjoining the town of Rochester, for the purpose
cf establishing a Home for widows and their or-
phan children. Immediately adjoining the farm,
the grounds known se " (InliegP Hill," tine em
bracing eleven acres, which command a view of
the Ohio Valley for twenty-one miles, have been
generously donated to us for a Female Seminar} - ,
by the same public spirited gentlemen who pre
sented the church lot. Although the means have
not yet been furnished for the erection of either
of these institutions, they will doubtless be estab
lished whenever God's time-,comes; and the ins.
portance of a suitable church for the accommo
dation of their inmates must be apparent to all.
The proposed church will be e cphatically a.
church of mercy," and its doors will be open .
for generations to come, to the suffering mem
bers of our Lord's body. Under these eircum
stanOes it has peculiar claims upon the literality
of the benevolent. In the absence of a eongre
gallop, and without means to complete the edi
fice, rue make our appeals to those who love God
and Aympathize wi.th his struggling cause.
We said that the church was up nod under roof.
It is hot however, enclosed, or floored, or'plas
tered, On this account we meet far worship in
thelinblic school house, but many who desire, to
attend cannot find seats, and the room is often
like an oven. We confess that our anxiety is
very great to get into the church. If the win
dowsi doors and floors were finished, this might
be One, and the interior could be completed
afterwards. But to do this we need aid from
abrodd. The Church Extension Society is al.
ready, beset with more applications than it can
'utile% and in addition, we knew that a loan from
it colld not he refunded in five years. At this
eh/trellis peculiar in its character and
we must depend for relief upen t , free-wilt offer

gene Ons sympathy and aid 1 . Who will respond
to thip call in the spirit of a large and liberal
Christianity. The small sum of two thousand
