Je24 ROBT. C. WALKER, Secretary
Ohio and Pennitylvania Railroad
STOCKHOLDERS MEETING TO CONSIDER THE CON
SOLIDATION
Yesterday, at 11 A. M., the Stockholders of the
Ohio and Pennsylvania Railroad met at their office,
on Fifth etreeL A large number of Stockholders were
in attendance.
On motion of Col. George W. Cass, Geis. Samuel
Lahon, of Canton, Ohio, was called to preside, and
George R. Arnold, of this city, appointed Secretary.
Col. Cass, the President of the Road, stated that
the meeting had been called for the purpose of con
sidering articles of consolidation between the Ohio
and Pennsylvania Railroad Company, the Ohio and
Indiana Railroad Company, and the Fort Wayne
and Chicago Railroad Company into one road, to be
called " The Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago
Railroad." By the law under which this action was
to be had, it was necessary that the articles of con
solidation should be submitted to the Stockholders,
and for this purpose the meeting had been called.
Col. Cass then read the articles of consolidation,
with which our readers are already familiar, as all
the material points have been published.
The articles of consolidation were then formally
submitted to the Stockholders, to be voted on ac
cording to law.
Col. Cass, as representing stook in the city of
New York, and not in his capacity as President of
the Road, submitted the following resolutions :
Resolved, That a vote by ballot be now had for the
adoption or rejection of the articles of consolidation,
as submitted by the Board of Directors of this Com
pany:
Retolved, That all those in favor of consolidation,
place upon their ballot, " For Consolidation," and
those apposed, place upon their ballot, "Against
Consolidation."
Resolved, That Wm. M. Edgar, It. F. Smyth and
C. W. Ernest be and are hereby appointed tellers to
receive and count the rotes, and report the same to
this meeting.
Resolved, That the polls be kept open until it
o'clock, P. M., or such further time as may bo dwig
noted by this meeting.
The resolutions were unanimously adopted.
On motion of Mr. McKnight, amended by Mr
Murdoch, the meeting then took a recess until 7 P.
M., the voting of stock meanwhile proceeding.
I=l
At 9 I'. M., the meeting re-assembled, but the
business transacted was unimportant. The meeting
was eery harmonious, and the feeling seemed to be
Al one way, viz : In favor of consolidation. At 9P.
M., the rules were all counted off, showing the fol
lowing result :
Whole number of votes east
Number " for Consolidation "...
Do " against Consolidation
Majority for Consolidation
(me of the resolutions passed was to the effect that
a meeting of the stockholders of the new Railroad
(the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago) should be
held on the 30th inst., for the perpose of electing a
new Board of Directors and President.
Boy., Take Care ! —As the Ulorions Fourth ap.
proaches, big boys and little boys seem to consider it
a kind of saturnalia when they may do as they please,
and acting on this thought have commenced explod
ing Chinese crackers,:" set off" Roman candles and
in divers other ways express their regard for
Freedom's natal day. This is all very welA, and we
believe the disposition of the community to allow
them the largest liberty, providing it don't interfere
with the enjoyment of others. But there are some
evil disposed urchtni who will find themselves rely
bracing the Fourth in the lockup if they do not put
a restraint on their inclination to be mischievous.
One of these was in front of our office yesterday, and
watching a favorable opportunity when a couple of
ladies were passing, threw a bunch of fire crackers
immediately under their feet--of course greatly to
their alarm. We hope the police will be on the look.
out for all such and make examples of them.
De. Beale . . , Arctic I"oyngr.nt 31n.anie Hall.— The
stupendous grandeur of Arctic scenery displayed in
this Panoramic portraiture, elicit, the most profound
admiration from crowded aFFeinhlaget. Indeed it
surpasses all our torwer r,..-epti..no of sublimity.
Take mountain and plain, sinuous river and broad,
tranquil waters, stately ship and tiny boat, gentle
hill and shady valley, bold headland and rich fruit
ful fields, frowning battlements and cheerful villa,
glittering dame and rural spire, flowery garden and
sombre forest—group them all in the choicest picture
of ideal beauty your fancy can create - arch it over
with a cloudless sky, light it up with a radiant Fun,
and, lest the scene should he too dazzling, hang a
veil of light haze over all, to soften the light and
perfect the repose—you will then have a seem that
will bear no comparison to the wild splendor of Arc
Liz nature. (lo early, if you expect a seat.
Poor Ho rec.—Yesterday afternoon a fine looking
iron-gray attached to a large wagon laden with stone.
through the carelessness of his &tyro, was thrown
d Mil in the midst of a largo heap of lime on Filth
street, and lay there entirely helpless until his gears
were cut by the bystanders. Tt e pour animal must
have suffered terribly from the effects of the quick
lime. Such accidents as the one we have mentioned
are of daily occurrence, and in nine cases out of ten
their cause can he traced to the blundering or care
lessness of the persons who have the poor beasts in
charge. if some individual would have a couple of
the reckless Telma jerked up before His Honor, the
Mayor, be would deserve a medal from the Humane
Society.
Theatre.—The entertainment offered at the Thee
ere to-morrow, for the celebration of the Fourth, can
not fail to merit the appreciation of the most fastidi
ous. They correspond and are suitable to the feel
ing which the day always elicits. In the afternoon
will be performed the " Flying Dutchman." "Mad
Anthony Wayne," and the clown's budget of blund
ors. The evening's selection is equally choice and
varied, commencing with " Uncle Tom's Cabin," to
be followed by the " Terror of the Road " and "Free
dom's First Dawn," in addition to which, there will
be singing and dancing. With such a bill crowded
houses must be the result,
{ ' an Amburgh's Circus and Menagerie arrived yes
terday according to announcement, and exhibited in
the evening to a large and well pleased audience. A
great variety of curious animals are gathered in the
menagerie, and the circus company is composed of
first rate equestrians and gymnasts. To-day there
will be both an afternoon and evening performance,
and tomorrow, in order to give the thousands who
desire it an opportunity to see the show, there will
be four performances. The whole is exhibited for a
single price of admission. Large numbers of people
from the country will visit the city on the Fourth to
see the sights.
A Relic of the Great Fire.—llughes' tavern, the
trot tenement created in the burnt district after the
great fire of April 10, 18-1.5, was razed to the ground
yesterday to give way to the march of improvement.
It was located on Water, between Wood and Market
streets. There are a number of shells and rookerle I
in that vicinity over whose "decline and fall" few
tears would be shed.
Aileyhelly Valley Railroad.—We stated yesterday
that the last excursion train upon this road on the
Fourth of July would leave at 6.4.5 P. M. This is a
mistake, as we learn from Mr. Hopper it departs at
5,45 P. M. The 6 A. M. train runs to Parnassus,
eighteen miles from this city, where there will be a
grand Sabbath School celebration on the Fourth.
Sabbath sehocti Celebration on the Fourth—We un
derstand that the different Sabbath Schools of this
city intend celebrating the Glorious Fourth by ex
vursious to the country, picnics,
Didn't Come off.—The grand writing match be
tween Mr. W. P. Cooper, of the Iron City College and
Mr. J. D. Williams, of Duff 'a College, did not come
off at the Board of Trade rooms yesterday, in conse
quence of the former gentleman being unavoidably
detained in Onio, where he has been sojourning for
some time. His associate in business, A. Cowley,
however, offered to take his place, but this was de
clined. Mr. Cowley now offers to write with Mr.
Williams for a wager of $lO. Our advice to these
gentlemen of the quill is, keep cool during dogs-days,
or the consequences might be disastrous.

THIRTY.FOURTH CONGRESS
FIRST SESSION.
WASHINGTON, July 2.—Senate.—The chair laid
before the Senate a communication from the Secre.
tary of State transmitting the original journal of the
proceedings of the Board of American COMIIIiAfHOI2-
ers at Paris to liquidate and audit the claims of
American citizens against the French government,
being for debts due them, and for the satisfaction of
which provision was made by the Convention be
tween the United States and France, April 30, 1503.
Mr. Clayton said the report was made in answer
to a resolution submitted by him some time ago. lie
desired to call attention to the document, because it
completely refuted the ground upon which the Pre
sident based his veto of the French Spoliation
That veto rested on the assumed basis that the claims
for spoliations were all examined and allowed tinder
the treaty of 1803, but this doeument discloses the
fact, that so far front this they were excluded for the
reason that the Commissioners had nothing to do
with them. Ile alluded to the fast that many years
since he examined the subject, when it was before
the Senate, being a member of the Bclect Committee,
of which Daniel Webster was chairman: Mr. Web
ster took no part in the matter ; Mr. Clayton being
second on the Committee, investigated the subject,
and reported the bill which, contrary to the expecta
tions of many friends, passed both houses by a de
cided majority, but unfortunately encountered the
veto of President Polk. Afterwards another bill
similar to that passed Congress, but was vetoed by
President Pierce. but the latter veto anus n o t booed
upon the same reason as the former, and any Senator
who would take the pains to examine the document
now before the Senate would see that the whole
foundation of President Pierce's veto was an error in
fact. lie added that the sympathies were i“rovgly
in favor of these claimants, and he hoped c o ne
ore would be done for them.
The House bill creating the right of way to the
