THE CAMPAIGN POST.
There is already a pretty large demand for the
campaign Pad, and we hope our friends will
push it along fast. It is furnished to cluls of
ten or more for fifty cents each until the cam
paign is over, and the result made known. The
price is but a trifle, and it contians more rear
ing matter than any other weekly or campaign
paper in Western Pennsylvania.
It is likely to be an exciting c..intest mail is
in fact one of the most important Presidenrd
contests through which the country has ever
passed. We want to have the people poAtrd up
n.B to the issues involved, whatever way they may
intend to vote. Hence it is that we offer our
campaign paper so cheap. It will at the same
time I e much larger than any other cue issued.
To Clubs of ten . 53 00
To Clubs of to-enty-two 10 00
To Clubs of thirty-five 15 t.O
Will our friends take an interest in this matter,
and shove it along.
We have already got several large clubs, and
expect many more.

the lie that northern Democrats favor the eaten•

as every man of common sense knows.
Are northern Know Nothings in favor of the

their papers. Are northern Old-line Whigs in
favor of the extension of slavery ? No. But
southern Old line Whigs are, and their papers
could be quoted from with equal effect. But
what of it? Southern Democrats, Whigs and
Know Nothings are all to a great extent in favor
of the extension of slavery, while the same par

ever. are resolved that the question of slavery or
no slavery in new territories shall be decided by
the people of the territories themselves. Thus
perpetual agitation on the subject will be kept
out of Congress. Thus a cause of Sectional strife
will he removed from the States. Thus one of
the greatest perils to our Union will be a verted.
And thus the painciple of popular sovereignty

THE GERDIANB. ij
All the hopes of the Know Nothings and Re
publicans are based on the supposed defection of
the German voters from the party that they have
to a great extent heretofore acted with. That
some of the German voters prefer the Know
Nothings to the Democrats we are prepared to
believe; but they are not that class of Germans
who can still remember the slaughter of their
countrymen by the Know Nothings at Louisville,
St. Louis, New Orleans and Baltimore.
The Democratic party has had the control of
our government nearly all the time for more
than half a century, and will have it for half a
century more. Let those leave it who choose to,
their places will be filled with true men and pa
triots who are worth far more than the discon
tented and unstable and unreliable. But ac
counts from all quarters satisfy us that but a
small portion of the German voters will support
the Republican and Know Nothing ticket. They

MK, BCCIIANAN AND THE OSTEND MANIFESIO.
A writer in the National Int,lligencer, who ad
dresses himself to the old line Whigs in regard
to their course in the pending presidential con
test, recommends them to withhold their support
from Mr. Buchanan mainly upon the ground of
his sentiments as contained in the " Ostend
Manifesto." The objection is stated by the
writer as follows :
" And, especially, how can we support Mr. Buchan
flu:. who -c celebrated ()stoic! wany'r.eto has commit
ted him to an extent even trap 'ending the limits of
the Cincinnati platform' I i that manifesto he does
nut hesitate to say that wo .I , la hare Cuba at all
lie a dvi.es our government to offer to pur
chase it: and, if Spain should refuse to sell, then
take it by Such is Mr. Buchanan's position."
It is fortunate for Mr. Buchanan that his real
position on the Cuban question is susceptible of
an elucidation so certain and clear that no
apology for misconstruction or misrepresentation
can exist. The " Ostend Manifesto itself
furnishes a triumphant answer to any misrepre
sentation on the subject. Without traveling out
of the record, we will proceed to expose the
injustice done to Mr. Buchanan in the foregoing
•
extract.
The writer says that Mr. Buchanan " does
not hesitate to say that we must hare Cuba at all
risks." Again : he says that Mr. Buchanan
advises our government, -if Spain should refuse
to sell, then take it (Cuba) BY FORCE." These
are presented by the writer in the Intelligeneer as
Mr. Buchanan's positions in the Ostend document.
We undertake to prove from the document itself
that its true language and interpretation so
materially qualify and modify the positions
attributed to him as entirely to relieve him from
the imputations of tillibusterisin contained in the
article to which we are replying.
On the importance to our government of the
acquisition of Cuba the Ostend document holds
this language :
It must be clear to every reflecting mind that.
from the peculiarity of its geographical position and
the considerations attendant un it. Cuba is so neces
sary to the to the North American republic as any of
its present member , , and that it belongs naturally to
that great family ci States of which the Union is the
providential nursery.

which dieeml.,gue themselves through this maginifi•
cent river into the Gulf of Mexico, the increase of the
population, within the last ten years, amounts to more
than that of the entire Union at the time Louisiana
was annexed to it.
"'rhe natural and main outlet to the products of
this entire population, the highway of their direct
intercourse with the Atlantic and Pacific States, can
never be secure. but must ever be endangered whilst
Cuba is a dependency of a distant power, in whose
possession it has proved to be n source of constant
annoyance and embarrassment to their interests.
'• Indeed. the Union can never enjoy repose, nor
possess reliable security, as long as Cuba is not em.
braced within its boundaries.
Its immediate acquisith•n by our government is
i.l paramount importance. and or oannut doubt but
that it ie a ronsutumation devoutly wished for by !is
inhabitants.
