STEAMBOAT BURNET).—The steamer "Anawun"
Capt. Dorsey, was burned at the landing at four
o'clock Saturday morning. She bad arrived at
2k o'clock from the Benwood mill, where she had
received 1000 kegs of nails. The fire was first
discovered in the vicinity of the boilers, and be•
fore water could be gotten upon it, had gained.
such headway that no human exertion could have
1--sifved . the boat. She was cut loose and floated
out into the stream a blazing wreck which
scowled the boats as she passed them. The hull
grounded on the island side of the channel, near
ly opposite the creek, where she was scuttled to
but little purpose, the cargo, 121 i tons, being 4-
most a total loss, while nothing but the machin
ery will he saved, and that in O sadly damaged
condition. lier freight was principally dry.goods,
which is said to be partially insured in western
offices. The " Amman," was owned as follows:
Mr. Coffin, Newport, Ky., one-fourth'; Theodot-e•
Fitzhugh & Bro., Ravenswood, Va., ione•eighth
Mrs. Mary Muirine, Wheeling, one , elghth;: CU
Baker & Co., Wheeling, one half.i•• The inittrattee
on the boat was but about $9OOO. Value $14,-
000. Baker & Co., had purchased their half on
the 11th inst.
Those of the officers and crew who were on
board lost everything ; and two or three escaped'
narrowly with their lives.
The wharf boat was considerably injured, and
was saved• with dififehlty, the Mk . ..4l*a :V)
contact with the " Anawan" being compleiely
charred.
The "Rosalie," which. was lying outside of
the "Anawan," was cut loose and floated down
the current, without steam.
The " New York " and " Arctic " were badly
scorched by the intense heat.— Wheeling Intelli

CIGARS.—The finest tobacco in the world conies
from Havana. But there is only, a limited area
in Cuba in which that tobacco is produced, au
that whilst the Havana tobacco may be of ex
cellent quality in general, the best is the produc
tion or a very small area, and is chiefly used in
the island, or as presents, a very limited amount
going into consumption. Tobacco, scarcely in
ferior to that from Havana, has, however, been
brought from Trinidad and the southern Russian
provinces. Manufacture, on the other hand ex
ercises a great influence over the quality of to
bacco. In Algiers where the climate is most
favorable, the cigars are not smokable, because
they are badly prepared. Again, some English
made cigars are of much greater excel ence than
many of the cigars imported from Havana, and
paying the highest duty as manufactured tobac
co; and there is no doubt, whatever, that it is
quite practicable to make cigars in this count7'
which shall be distinguishable in appearance,
and not very distinguishable in flavor, from any
except those first-class Havana cigars, which
scarcely ever come into consumption. —From

A RIDICULOUS S roir.—ln the London Times of
the 11 th inst., we find the following note addressed
to its editor:
Sin—During the Mexican war the United
States openly enlisted men for their service both
in Upper and Lower Canada; they had agents
both at Niagara and in the Eastern townships.
Surely this is a sufficient precedent and justifies
the aotiewof the English government about which
so much noise has been made. Yon may rely on
the truth of this statement.
I OM sir, your most obedient servant,

NEW ORLEANS has been deserted by large nun.
hers of its citizens much earlier this year than
usual, the prevalence of yellow fever during three
tuceessive years with great fatality, having,
caused people to fear the summer of that city.
Thus far not a case of the epidemic has been re
ported, nor is there any premonitciry symptortrot
its approach, but the anticipation is enough, and
the city is fast becoming depopulated by the rush
nf citizens northward. Perhaps Ethe effect of
this early desertion may be tb - keep the city
healthy, and prevent the diffusion of the epi
demic, or the engendering of it by a crowded
population.
DEATH OF A MFDIIIER OF CONGRESS.—The Hon.
Thomas H. Bayly died on Monday afternoon lait,
of consumption, at his residenze in' Accomac
county, Va. The deceased was a prominent
member of the Democratic party, and suatableil
a very high poSitioa in both political and social
relations. He was a representative to Congress
from the Accomac district for several years, and
was elected to the present session, but in conse
quence of ill health occupied his seat but a few
days in December.
FLOUR AND GRAlN.—Tho.quantity of grain and
flour coming East, by way of the Lakes, is very
large. The Cleveland (Ohio) Plaindealer, of
Saturday, says the number of barrels of flour
exported from that port by lake this season to
that time was 173,416, against 54,592 in the same
months of 1856, a difference in favor of 1856 of
48,824 barrels The export of corn for 1856
amounts to 153,160 bushels against 40,270 bush
els in the same months of 1855, a difference cf
112,890.
PANA MA. —A ffairs at Panama appear to be quiet.
The United States Commissioner is engaged in
investigating the late riot. The government of
the State of Panama is waiting the action of the
general government respecting the riot, without
doing anything towards the punishment of the
rioters. Quite a number of parties who have
left the United States with the intention of going
to Walker, but never reached him, have left h,m
upon furlough or have deserted, have succeeded
in obtaining employment here.
Pouvicsa..—The New York Commercial Adver
tiser, which recently withdrew its support from
Mr. Fillmore, now announces its intention to
sustain his election. It admits, however, that
many of its friends, who for years had been de
cided Whigs, are "disposed to vote fOr
Buchanan rather than see a sectional, unqualified
candidate like Col. Fremont elevated to the Presi
dency."
Music —The High and Low Church (Episco
palian) papers are still wrangling about the vexed
question (started in the New Jersey Diocesan
Convention,) " Shall the services be said or
sung ?" The Churchman swings the battle axe
bravely for the " intoning," system, but the
Episcopal Recorder and the Protestant Churchman
flow) set-their fans flat against h.—Netv York
