It is said that Mr. Van Riper, of New York, got fifteen thousand dollars for attempting to sell out the Fillmore National Club of New York City to Fremont and Dayton. But the attempt utterly failed after all. He was President of the club, and openly declared be would sell it for the best price he could get. So says the Herald. Pursuant to that intent he got together a small portion of the club quietly, taking care that they were the right kind of men for his purpose, and got resolutions passed abandoning Fillmore and Donelson, and issuing fin address in favor of • Fremont and Dayton. The moment the addres , appeared in print the great mass of the club was aroused. Another meeting wins called and fully attended, when the action of the Vail Riper conspirators was denounced as a fraud, and strong resolutions passed in favor of Fillmore and Donelson, the Union and Americanism. Mr. Van Riper was ordered out of the chair, denoun ' ced as a traitor and liar, and barely escaped be ing thrown out of the window. The club then adjourned to the St. Nicholas Hotel where Mr. Fillmore made them a speech, congratulating them upon the fact that the attempt to sell them had failed. It was not, then, an idle boast of the New York Herald,Ti e rra and Trihnne and other Fre mont organs that vast sums of money had been raised to advance the interests of Fremont and Dayton.
