From Hunt's Merchant's Magazine.)
Progressive Growth of
" Westward the star qi empire takes its way
London is now the greatest concentration of
human power the world has ever known. Will
its supremacy be permanent: or will it, like its
predecessors, be eclipsed by western rivals
New Yorkers do not doubt, and indeed, have
no reason to doubt, that their city, now num
bering little more than one-third of popula
toin of London, will, within the next fi.:y years,
be greater than the metropolis of the British
Empire.
New York, with her immediate dependencies,
numbers about 900,000. Since 1790, she has
eitabli.ihed a law of growth which doubles kifr
population once in fifteen years. If this law
c mtinues to operate, she may be expected to
possess 1,800,000 in 1871, 3,600,000 in 1886;
and 7,200,000 in 'l9Ol. if twenty years be
allowed New York as her future period of dupli
cation, she would still overtake London by the
end of fifty years. London may then have five
millions; New York will almost certainly have
niers than that number.
Will the star of empire become stationary at
New York
The interior plain of North America has within
itself more means to sustain a dense population
in civilized comfort than any other region of the
world. Lie star of empire cannot be arrested
in its western course before it reaches this plain.
Its most promising city at present is Chicago;
The law of its growth since 1840 seems to be a
duplication within four years. In 1840 it num
bered 4,479. In dung of this year it will con
tain 88,000. At the same rate of increase car
ried forward, it would overtake New York within
twenty years. If six years be allowed for each
duplication, Chicago would overtake New York
in thirty three years. If the growth of Chicago
'bould in future be measured by a duplication of
every seven years, it would contain 5,622,000 in
foi ty- two years.
In 1991, forty-five years from this time, the
central plain, including the Canadas, will con
tain about eighty millions of people. Its chief
city may be reasonably expected to contain about
one-tenth of this population. Before the end of
this canto. , , ;he cities and towns of the central
plain will contain, with their suburbs, not less
than half of the entire'population ; that is to
nay, forty millions. Illy these millions shall be
apportioned among' the cities of that day is a
subject for curious speculation.
Some twenty-eight years ago it was predicted
by the writer that one or more interior cities of
North America would, within fifty years, become
larger than New Orleans, and ultimately second
only to New York. Cincinnati and St. Louis
were then believed to be the favored points.
About sixteen years ago canals and railways
gave indications of their ability to transfer the
seats of commerce of the interior plain from
the river to the lake borders. It was then confi
dently asserted that the greatest cities would
grow up at Chicago, Toledo, and other commercial
points on the great lakes.
To most men, at that time, the idea that any
t. ',Ails had an average annual increase of 18
per cent : Chicago of over 20 per cent., and
Miiwaukie of 25 per cent. Since 1850, for six
y ea rs tune, 1t.t.56, Chicago hes continued to
increase at the average rate of 20 per cent.
compound yearly. Toledo has a little exceeded
that rate. Detroit and Cleveland have had a
like annual increase of It; per cent. Of the
Canadian cities of the plain, no one, except,
perhaps Mi.ntreal, can claim to be numbered
amiing the future great marts of the world.

which required a two-thirds vote, 64—a strict

few days ago, in this city, that Buchanan: could

We give the above in order to oho* the tine
character of the so-called political idtelligemoe
promulgated by the enemies of the. DemoCrntio
party. At the time stated' in this peripatoic
misrepresentation, Senator Brodhead was note in

SPIRITLESS CRAVENS. —No vocabularl contains
terms sufficiently expressive of the'loiitiliapt
that every man must feel toward the northern
wing of the Know Nothing party. They tried
in vain to sell out to the Black Republicans—
made all sorts of abject propositions—deputized
a committee to Phiradelphia to arrange a treaty,
and were willing to do anything so they - might
repose under the protecting wings of thiVraven
of northern sectionalism. But all their offers
were spurned—all their propositions treated with
disdain. This, however, did not Chatter. "They
stood the kicking, cuffing, and heating; like the
cowards they are—went back to New York, and
having Withdrawn their own nomination l g,;en
yesterday they confirmed that of Col.framont.
This is another demonstration of the'ittuities
tionable fact that Mr. Fillmore is entirely power
less at the north. All parties there have con•
ceutrated against him, save the few camp follow
ers who were the recipients of patronage when
he was the dispenser of the Presidential crumbs.

GEN. CASS ON RIFLE RELIGION.—Gen. Cass in
a letter to a committee at Boston who had in
vited him to attend the Buchanan ratification
meeting in that city wrote: " Our non inees are
worthy of our confidence, and besides their per
sonal claims, they are the representatives of that
great party of Washington, and Jefferscn, and
Jackson, which knows no country but the whole
country, and no people but the whole American
people ; and which believes that if every portion
of the Republic were left to manage its affairs
in its own way, without external interference,
and if more charity and less virulence were ex
hibited ; more of the Gospel of Jesui Christ and
less of Sharpe's rifles issued from the arsenals of
some of the churches.; that the good old days,of
peace and fraternal regard would soon return to
cheer the land." This is capital good setiee'se

D 'SCR:EDITS THE TALE. —lt is charged that Mr.
Buchanan said, forty years ago, before he be
came a Democrat, that "if he had a drop of
Democratic blood in his veins, he would let it
out." This charge has often been made, 'and
often authoritatively denied. The New York Tri
bune has the manliness to say of this absurd:but
malicious calumny:
We do not think any one who knew M. B.
ever credited this tale. He was never so simple
or impetuous as to use such an expression. There
is not a man Luring wore untaely to make rash, sally
apeectiee than he it."
So the Tribune not only iftscredits the tal'eJßnt
it broadly intimates that those whh arecirOals
ling it know it to be pure fabrication.
