In fact, we need not advance any better evidence
of the wonderful increase of St. Paul, than the one
fact that in 1549, the amount of business transacted
annually did not amount to more than 5131,0041,
while, in ItisS , it hai reached nearly $8.000,000.
The increase in the value of property has, of miurse,

Ketchum's Mowing Machine. The Germantown
(Pa.) Telegraph, of May 28th, publishes a report of
the proceedings of Farmer's Club, auxiliary to the
Philadelphia Society for Promoting Agriculture, at
which the question of mowing machines was dis
cussed. The verdict was unanimously in favor of
Ketchum's Machine, manufactured by Howard h. Co.,
of this city, as will appear from the following:
" The question was asked which, in the know
ledge of the members, was the beet mowing machine ?
There seemed to be but one opinion here. The posi
tion which Ketchum's assumed upon its first intro
duction, appeared to be fully maintained by the im
provements which from time to time had been intro
duced. The advantages which it possesses over
others that have hitherto come in competition with it,
was the superiority of its manufacture. In selling
rights, it was stated that the proprietors of this pa
tent particularly stipulated that they should not be
made inferior to a sample exhibited, and an agent
was dispatched to the various manufactories to en
force this condition. One of the principal cause, of
the failure of many of the other patents was th e
miserable, fragile manner in which they were con
structed. The purchasers of the patent rights to
manufacture them, adopted the policy of consulting
their own immediate interests in building cheap ma
chines, so as to attract the custom of those farmers
whose short-sighted policy always has been to buy
where they can buy the cheapest, without regard to
quality. This policy, both on the part of the ma
ker and purchaser, has done more to decry mowing
and reaping machines than all others combined. A
machine breaks down, perhaps on the first or second
day's trial, just when it Is most needed, and it hoe
to be sent at considerable expense, some ten or
twenty miles to repair, only to break down again.
With Ketchum's, hundreds of acres have been cut
in a season, in the best manner, without any delay ur
expense."
JUNE 24
We understand that Holmes t Collins, Woo
street, near Fifth, have the machines for sale.

From Kansas
Sr. Loris, June 23.—A letter to the &yob/icon,
dated Westport, 17th, says that Sumner has put the
California and Santa Fe roads, and the principal
thoroughfares leading into Kansas, under blockade,
and has driven out Major Buford, Gen. Jones and
Col. Shelby, all of them heading emigrant parties.
Another letter, dated Kansas City, 16th, says that
Sumner states that every criminal, and person under
indictment in Kansas, shall be arrested, and that
Lane nor nobody else shall come armed into the ter
ritory, through lowa, Nebraska, or any other place,
except it be over his dead body.
Attempts were made on the night of the 13th, to
murder the new Deputy Sheriff of Douglas Co., who
lives in Franklin. Three men came to his house,
and fired through a window at his bed; they then
broke open the door, when the Sheriff shot one of
them dead ; ttisk, rest fled.
The same letter says that Sumner had received a
despatch dated 15th,!from Fort Kearney, stating that
R . band of Cheyenne Indians bad joined a party of
Sioux, and that war had been again proclaimed. One
white settler bad been killed. Sumner immediately
despatched a company to Kearney from the camp near
Wesppart.

THIRTY-FOURTH CONGR ESS
FIRST : 4 ENST(I,I.
WASHINCTON, June 23.—5, Fish present
ed a letter from tleorge Sumner... Mother of Senator
Sumner," which states that an errsineou
might be drawn from Dr. Boyle's letter, that the let
ter was kepi from an attenannee upon Senator sun,
ner on oeeount of the character or his te:l,lllk.uy L e
fore the House, This is entirely unfound-d, as Le
did not know at the time Dr. Boyle was dismissed
what his testimony was. At the time Senator Rum.
ner was suffering from a high fever, and lir. Pons
being willing to take charge of the case, Dr. Boyle -
services were no longer required.
Mr. 'LIOIIIIIB gave notice id hie intention to intro.
duce a bill to take a eensus of the population of h -
sas, to protect them in the exercise at their frem-hi-e
in the territory, and to provide for calling a Conven
tion to form a State Constitution preparatory to her
admission into the Union.
Mr. Toombs desired to have some complete and
final measures adopted or ;be pae'llcation of that
territory ; in order to effeet this a cem , ur should fist
be taken. This would take away all motive for either
seaion of the Union to attempt to force people into
Kansas and thereby endanger the pence of the coun
try in order to promote sectional advantage by hat
ing au institution made for the people of the territory
by the population who hist •; no interest in the ;fuer
tion. The bill will also p,otect the freedom ot th e
ballot-box, and to that end it rubinits such questin:
to five commissioners, to be relented b . \ the Pro—
dent, who shall eau, an examination to he wmi; ; her
the purpose, first, of a fair distribution of reprercnta
Lion so as to give a fair and egli,ll representation I a
population unequally serittered o, or tot;ito rs ,
secondly, of haring a registry or all bona fide inliabo
tants of the territory. The bill lir ids— that all white
male inhabitants over years shall be registered no
legal voters, and that NIIIP.InO be admitted in the
Union as a State, with oc little delay no practicable,
as soon ~ the census is taken, ;trot it shall be
ascertained who are real inhabitants of Kau s ,,,.
they shall proceed forthwith to the eleet, w , of
gates to a euflretltion to fern] a State Constitution.
This election he would have to take place ..0 the Ist
Tuesday of November; that would give sufficient
time, and allow four months' residence to the inhal..
itants. It would he a day when the people of the
different States would be prevented, in consequence
of being occupied with the Presidential election, from
even attempting to defeat thn reel wishes of the peo.
ple of Kansas, or to interfere with their election.
This measure is liable to but objecti u n, and
that not of principle or expediency ; it was only ,
to the ,11.1111111C13.1 of the number of inhabitants there
but that ojection was waived by a considerable por
tion of the Senate, and by a eery large part of the
people. Believing that llis proposition would inset
with a favorable reception and he promotive of good,
he should, at an early day, ask leave to introduce the
bill.
