VENALITY OP THE OPPOSITION
A grand coup cr eta! is about to be made by the
late proprietor of the " Woolly Horse" and his
friends, to secure the election of that " enterpri
sing young man" to the Presidency. Barnum,
the great showman, gave a good round sem to
Fremont for that curious animal, which has
doubtless, by this time, been exhausted in pro•
curing his nomination for the Presidency. But
according to those immaculate advocates of this
precocious aspirant, the New York Timm and
Herald, the great Mariposa estate in "California
is to be tapped, and piles of money are to be ex
pended in this groat contest for the "Woolly
Horse" candidate. Hear how these incorrupti.
ble patriots exult in the prospect of this " largrot
wealth," to be used in the campaign. The Tim.,
says:
" It is needless to say that the opposition elements
now happily combined by the action of the Phil,
delphita Convention, here every thing to gain, and tne
prospect of the largest wealth trheronrrlth to pay. la
the campaign we have entered upon. To ttn , ,e
upon whom such sordid inducements are alone etb,-.1
clone, they have the whole resources of the fedot at
patronage to offer.
"Without deliberately holding out any such bait
for mercenary aid, the opposition will, in spite
itself, attract a 'formidable rote of thte not rery
spectaide description. Since the flays when the intl.'_
once of Gen. Jackson ceased to be omnipotent, the
value of this little secret has been repeatedly demi...
sussed."
The Herald, whose extraordinary and sudden
summersault into the Fremont ranks excited , o
much astonishment, holds forth in the following
even more jubilant strain :
" The Fremont cause will doubtless hare plenty
money, books, pamphlets, pictorials, songs, transt.er
encies, and agitation in every shape and form; 00./
they will
_furtherm o r e hare the *timuitut of o
sweep of the public plunder. On the other hand,
while there is nothing of enthusiasm in the name or
history of Mr. Buchanan. it, is very uncertain whether
he will have even half.a-dozen good offices to gi% e
away.,•
Nor is this all : The Chicago Times informs us
that the Kansas Aid money is to be applied to
this same object.
And this is the great party that wituld hare us
believe it is actuated by pure patriotism and
love of country The gross trading and truck
ling to dictation manifested by their recent at
tempts at fusion, would satisfy the most unob
serving of the utter hollowness of such pro
fessions ; but we question if any one could hale
anticipated such impudent and open acknow
ledgments of the uUer venality and corruption
of these miserable factionists. It is the first
time in the history of the political campaigns of
this country, that such an unblushing and auda
cious avowal has been made. But we possess
an abiding faith in the honesty, patriotism and
incorruptibility of the people; and can tell
these hirelings that the great Mariposa estate,
the Kansas Aid imposture, and the stimulus '
of anticipated •• public plunder. - will
them but little in their Quixotic attempts to ele
vate this very .• enterprising young man " to
the Presidency.
THE NOMINEE WITH THREE TAILS.
The nature of. Col. Fremont's connection with
Barnum's woolly horse humbug is a matter of no
consequence just now ; but the kind of IL
" hanimal " that the " Republicans" and K.
N. 's have gut up to run a presidential ruc,•
is a curiosity far ahead of Barnum's hors
It is a Small horse with a woolly head and tw.,
tails. And there is some prospect of its basing
three tails before long. Stockton, it is supposed.
may withdraw and leave Raynor to run alone for
the Vice Presidency. It will then be Fremont
and Dayton as a woolly heed ticket: Frem,d,t
and Johnston as a soft shell ticket w lb a w00' . %
head : and Fremont and Raynor as a hard shell
ticket with the same kind of a head.
Now we submit that this fruit of the inter-
coarse of the late three eastern conventions i
prodigy excelling in novelty anything Bernina
has yet exhibited. In the great showman's
hand a " speculation " could be made out of it .
But in the hands of the wrangling fusionists it
must prove a failure.
The question " How shall Fremont
rid of the surplus tails ?" Any, 4t , tpoppt at am
, imitation would produce depletion that would
greatly weaken him. Cut off the Johnston tail
and in the linguage of some "indignant Penn
sylvanians " 'at Philadelphia, " Penniilvania
would be lost by 50,000." We quote from the
Times, E. N. Cut off the Raynor tail and every
southern K. N. vote goes to Fillmore and Donel
eon. Fremont cannot kirk his own extra tails
off, as Jake's mule did in lowa. Such an attempt
would be equally weakening as amputation. T.
persuade the extras to drop off of their own ac
cord would be little less disastrous. A vast
amount of strength would " drop off " with them,
and enure to the benefit of Fillmore and Donel
son. Either way it seems apparent must pro
duoe a loss more than equal to the gain ; and we
are forced to the conclusion that the woolly head
horse with three tails will prove as decided a
failure as Barnum'S animal did. In Oriental
countries a " Bashaw with three tails " is a
trump ; but in this country a presidential nomi
nee with three tails is a low card, and can never
"As things have themselves " just now, we
confess it is difficult to determine upon what
point of the hostile line to turn our batteries.
We must wait for further developments, differing
a little from the Rhode Islander in the meantime.
The Times reports a Rhode Island delegate at
Philadelphia as saying that "if Josh Giddings
can't have things all his own way he'll smash 'en?
up." The truth is " Uncle Josh " had thingi
all his own way at Philadelphia, and " arnashed
em up " besides.
-----
OBE TEEN. -Mr. Buchanan has distinctly an
nounced in his letter of acceptance, that he shall
accept only for one term. W e like this recogni
tion and endorsement of the one term principle.
It is practically correct, and will, no doubt, be
the practice of the Democratic party. Gen.
Jackson was the last President who served two
terms, and unless some extraordinary man or
circumstances are developed in the future, the
one term principle will be practically carried
out hereafter by the Democracy, without any
change in the Constitution being needed for that
purpose.

exceedingly. To show how they commence this
hopeful task we quote the following from the
Philadelphia Tmo , s, the Know Nothing organ. at ,
to remarks made at the Philadelphia convention.
An Indiana speaker said :.
"He didn't know that hey could get any of
them Dutch and Irish votes in his State that
Giddings had talked about. The Denocrats al
ways got 'em, and he thought always would.
They might carry Fremont in Indiana, but it
would be au awful tight squeeze.
Indignat t Pennsylvanians declared that be
would be beaten 40,000 in this State and offered
to bet $lOO to $5O that he couldn't carry Indiana
or Illinuis, niggers, Dutch, Irish and all."
It will be observed that they put the "nigger'
first, and then the "Dutch," and then the "Irish."
That is the way they expect to get "Dutch and
Irish" Totes. It is the Know Nothing estimate
of the intelligence of the naturalized citizens to
suppose they can be so beguiled ; and it is the
Know Nothing estimate of their value as citizens
to rank them after and below the negroes.
Surely the Germans must go for Fremont after
such a complimentary notice. Observe, our et

'Wednesday morning wive taken up with the timer
Mewl in the Cstliege proper. The graduating ~ 1:i
was not large. but most of the young gentlemen
quitted themselves very creditably. This wt. ,
memorable epoch in their lives. The doors or 0
College closed behind them—they lingered on i
balcony and looked out at the future with anxious
and inquiring gate. It, still, stony, as expressi on less an a Sphynx, returned the stare. Their position
on tile threshold of life calls up a troop of recolle..
tines, and suggests a train of thought which I intn-t
not follow now. On Wednesday evening, Jane's 11.
Hopkins, of your city, delivered an address befo re
the Phi-gamma-delta Society. Afterwards, John 1..
Dawia.n, of Fayette county, addressed the Washing
ton and Union Literary Societies. Mr. Dawson's
speech was full of eloquence and learning, and was
appreciated by a large and attentive audience.
At the close of his address there was a beautiful
display of tire works in the campus; an illuminated
balloon was sent up; it sailed gracefully away until
lost in the depths of distance; the college buildings
were illuminated, and the whole scene was surpas
singly grand. To the there is something so awe in
spiring and solemn in a fall, quiet blare, or a flaming
rocket, that I never witness suet, exhibitions with
out wondering how Nero could rejoice while Rowe
was burning. But when the artificial lights died out
and the moon rolled on her way in silent sweetneis,
inspiring all with gentleness and love, each felt that
though art might gratify for the moment, the beau
ties and glories of nature are unfailing.
On Thursday Robert A. Koontz, Esq., delivered a
salutation to the alumni of the college. lie was fol.
lowed by Rev. James J. Brownson, with a historical
address. Then Thomas H. Elliott, M. D., of Alle
gheny city, delivered an address commemorative of
deceased alumni of the college. All of these address.
es were exceedingly interesting; were written in a
-classical. captivating style, and received the unani
mous and hearty commendations: of an intelligent and
discriminating audience. They are AI to be pub
lished, and you will have the pleasure of perusing
them. On Thursday afternoon a jubilee dinner was
Served up fur the alumni, who did full justice to all
the luxuries. After the table was cleared there was
"a feast of reason and a flow of soul." Venerable
ministers, learned jurists, eminent politicians, and
renowned instructors partiolpated in the proceedings
and added to the hilarity of the occasion.
'OD Thursday evening the festivities closed with a
party given by Mrs. Hanna, principal of the Female
Seminary here. It was a brilliant and pleasant
party. The number of bright-eyed beauties assem

The Democratic State Central Committee of
Pennsylvania performs a pleasing duty in direct

June, IS. l lti The incidents which prt reded, ac

confirmed the earnest, all pervading and deep

statesman. Since the time when the masses
proclaimed their preference for the hero of New
Orleans no such demonstration has been witness

candidates was promptly followed by the en

the venerated Cass. first raised at the Capi
