The Vigilant Engine.—The following particulars
in relation to the above machine we take from the
Chronicle
The new Vigilant " was immediately transferred
to the House of the Company, on Third street, which
has recently been fitted up in a most tasteful and
magnificent style.
We had the pleasure to-day of taking a look at
the engine, and "annul find words to express our ad
miration. The machine is beautiful and symmetri
cal, combining, at once, the ornamental with the sub
stantial—the ogle cum deb-..
Technically speaking, she is an eight inish sloul,le
chamber engine, with three side and one gallery
stream, with a body of mahogany, with patent axles
on springs, with cross springs at the ends and a spi
ral spring in front. Her wheels are four feet six
inches in diameter. with two and a half inches tre...l
or width of tire. She is both inn most substanr,il
manner. with all the inielcrn improvements :
having heel, submitted to test. has been found to be
all that mold be desired in point serviee. She
will prose an invaluable addition to our fire depart
went, and our citizens. (ineluiling the insurance
companies,t may congratulate themselves on !hit in
creased means of protecting property fr-iiii the ras
ages of fire.
The Engine is particularly noticeable for the go r
geous and luxurious manner in which she is erns
mented. The "goose-neck," pipes and nozzles
of Herman-silver. The edges of the foot-boards
composed of the same material. She is also protii
ly decorated at every point kith brass tin-I silver
naments. But the gallery is a real triumph.
its four sides we find paintings in isil, which we
not hesitate in declaring . worlts of high art. rent c
aliens of artistic genius. The front panel is ise,
pied by n representation of the mottoes of the e.,
pany—Vigilance and Fidelity. A beautiful ns.itt
clasps tier tender offspring in her arms. while at I
feet a little girl—a very Heise in beauty--lie-, re.
ning gently upon the breast of a iliith/a/ slog.

JUNE 2°
IV AS ILINGTON, June 2 1 .—/Touse.--Mr.Bindengaz ue
defended Massachusetts against general and specified
charges, claiming that in all that constitutes true
questions she is the first State, and that her present
perfortnani es are superior to her past patriotic re
collection, Ile was sorry to find at the head of the
16t i as,ailants the President of the United States
wh., had deliberately perverted her history to eulo
gize the South at the expense of the North, and be
come the chieftain of sectionalism. Massachusetts
believed with South Carolina the Fugitive Slave Law
to be unconstitutional.
Mr. Keitt asked Mr. 13urliugame f r his authority
relative to South Carolina.
Mr. Burlingame cited the remarks of the Charles.
ton ti o, which spoke of the Fugitive Slave Law
as an infringement of one of the most cherished prin.
eiples of the Citmtitothili. In conclu.iiin he referred
Li, Mr. Summer's speech and its purity and nobleness;
it. sentiments and severity, and its strictures against
fyrtinoy. Mr. Sumner 1..-ver had a personal enemy;
his character was a- pure as the snow which falls on
in, native his heart overflowing with kindness
for every human being bearing the upright form of
man . he was an accomplished scholar and a chival
ric gentleman. A member of the House who had
taken an oath to support the Constitution stole into
the Senate and ' , mete hi= brother.
Mr. lieitt- -It is false.
Mr. Burlingame replied that he would nut bandy

and ilouLtles , the gentleman tone responsible for his.
Ain Feist-1 am
Mr. Burlingame, after de , eriliing and severely eon
deinning the assault, asked : Call :vial that chivalry?
