the call of the Chairman.
In the absence of the Chairman, Hon. C SILILLER was ap

On motion, it Was
Resolved, That it is inexpedient to change the time pre
viously fixed for the meeting of the Convention, to wit:
—th day of August.
On motion of Col. Junes Salisbury, seconded by B.
Roberts, Frei., it was
Resolved, That we recommend to the County C o nvention
the propriety of changing the manner of voting for the
nomination candidates, by voting rile coos, instead of mark
tag, as heretofore
C. SHALER, ChalrmAn. pro Inn
Jorec N. M'CL€Arar, Secretary.
Look upon this pi. turf and on Ant
Every unprejudiced and discerning mind ado
has traced the action of the political parties in
the. present struggle from incipiency to the
developments afforded by the actions of the e.,a
ventions in the adoption of their platforms and
the choice of their candidates, cannot but be
struck by the great contrast exhibited in their
aims and objects, and the disparity of their In
mire prospects. One party stands upon hr. ad
national ground, bringing forward a mat: re
statesmen to sustain the great principles upoi
which the Union is based and upon which its
perpetuity depends. The other is composed of
factional elements representing sectional preju
dices, and fomenting discord even to rebellion :
to convention preferring supposed "availabili
ty," to every other consideration, and putting
forward men of no experience at statesmen as
candidates for the highest offices in the govern
ment. Under such circumstances it cannot lie
wondered at, that while the one party is acting
in unity and in full confidence of success, the
other, governed by petty, personal jealousie, :8
rent into fragments and doomed to humiliating
defeat.
When the represontatives of the conservat,ve
party of the Union which " knows no East, no
West, no NOrns, st-a - Soutir," but wilickt with ti ue
national patriotism seeks to allay the raging
elements of sectional strife, so much feared sod
deprecated by the immortal Washington, met in
Convention at Cincinnati to nominate their eau
didates and erect their platform, every State
was fully represented by the-most patriotic and
gifted men of the country—each State seemed to
vie with the other who should send the beet men
—the eyes of the whole nation were upon them,
and their decision was regarded by all parties
with that intense interest which tacitly implied
that that decision would be regarded as a "final
ity." So universal was this feeling that the only
hope of the sectionalists was that some faux ras
might be committed, and that the great Penn
sylvania statesman to whom the whole country
looked for succor and relief might not be nomi
nated. But they were doomed to disappoint
ment—the delegates to that Convention had
high purposes to accomplish—the most noble
sacrifices were made—Democrats who had been
alienated for years, were again affiliated and
brought together in unity and friendship—and
when the names of those distinguished state.•
men, Buchanan and Breckenridge, were formally
placed before the people, the event was hailed
with one universal burst of enthusiasm—the
booming of cannon—the ringing of bells—the
inspiiinetrains of music were heard everywhere
in honor of this auspicious event. Ratification
meetings were held by the people in every city
and town, and the glorious " stars and stripes"
waved proudly in honor of this great national vii -
tory which proclaimed that the Union is safe.
But no such triumph awaited the nomination.;
of the political husksters who, representing a
fragment of the Union, attempted to drive
,'profitable bargain" by cheating each other into
the support of the favorite candidate of each.
The traders were too sharp for each other and
the "fusion" was but partially accomplished.
No shouts of enthusiasm awaited their nomina
tions—no guns were fired—no ratification meet
ings held, or even suggested. The people felt
indifferent and have left these factioniste to fight
out their battles as best they can. " Curses
loud but deep" are the only responses that have
been heard and while the Bolters are reduced to
the pleasant alternatives of bolting the nausea
ting food crammed into their mouths by their
Black Republican cooks, or of accepting the
nomination previously made by the National
American confreres, the Black Republican "path
finders" have gone on an exploring expedition,
without either compass or chart, and having lost
their trail will probably "bring up" in Novem
ber next, somewhere about the head waters of
" Salt River."
ANOTHER FALSE OKOAN.—A new paper was
started in this city some months ago. Support
was sought for it among Democrats as well as
Know Nothings and "republicans," and we be
lieve a good many democrats, as well as others,
were induced to subscribe for it. It now turns
out to be one of the most mendacious of the
sheets that seek to deceive the people. Here is
a specimen of it in its last issue:
" The only practical issue between the two parties
represented by Fremont and Buchanan is shall
Freedom or Slavery prevail in Kansas?'"
Now every man of common sense knows that
that remark is an unmitigated falsehood. The
paper is not of much account, and can have very
little influence, however.
James Buchanan has been charged again and
again with having been from his youth opposed
to the extension of slavery. This new candidate
for popular favor and support reverses the charge
and says he is in favor of slavery extension.
The truth is, as is now well known, that he
stands firmly on the ground that the people of
each State and Territory shall determine all lo
cal matters, including slavery, for themselves
His opponent says they shall not. That is the
only issue, so far as Kansas is concerned, and
none but a dunce can doubt how it will be de
cided by the people next fall.
Ilhatet DAL-At.. 4 o'clock on Saturday even.
ing last the thermometer stood at 94° in the
shade. That will _pass for 0 very warm day.
After 'so cold a winter the effect of a very warm
summer will be pretty severely felt. It has now
begun right for a warm summer.

FREMONT AND CALIFORNIA
There is nu doubt that Fremont is one of tht,
most unpopular men in California He repie
sented that State iu the United States Senate
just one session, and his only exploit was to in
troduce a bill providing for the sale of all the
mineral lands by the govenment. This would
have cut every miner out of his claim The whole
mining interest of California was up in am,Q
about it, and Fremont dared not even attempt
to secure a re-election to the Senate. The h , ll
that he introduced fell still born. That Is the
sum total of Fremont's statesmanship. What ,q

He was so bitterly opposed to it that he threw

That is the way a patriot oppo.es a war iu which

The Philadelphia Times, the Know Nothint

matters and things about the Convention and tin.

seemed to here exhausted itself. The Pennsylvania
delegation had swallowed a bitter pill, and the cm

said that no enthusiasm would be found rolling over
the hills and vainest of Pennsylvania, similar to that
which would have responded to the nomination 01

Fremont. As for this New Jersey wan ho did'nt
know much about him and eared l oss . H e would do
well enough to play seeond fiddle to the grizzly bear
hero.
Connecticut was bound to hold a ratification meet
ing under the Charter Oak, and the spiritual medi
ums should summon old Captain Wadsworth to make
a speech for them ; a real regular Fremont Kansas
speech. And if he spoke in Congo or Hottentot the
mediums should translate. There should be plenty
of blue laws and wooden pumpkins. Massachusetts
wanted Bunker Hill Monument to be carried by
railroad over the country, and Colonel Fremont
mounted ou it to make speeches to the excited multi
tude. If that would not raise their spirits, then
they would bring round the Salem witches on exhi

Maine thought that she would send some of her
white pine and mackerel as a contribution to free

Ohio agreed to give a string of Buckeyes and a
big Western Reserve cheese with plenty of hogs and

Kentucky agreed to throw in a specimen of her
corn, cattle and hard-shell Baptists ; besides a nigger
if it was needed.

THE LATE FALLIJIIE IN CHINA. —The London
Times says A statement published by the
assignees of the insolvent estate of Messrs. Nye,
Brothers & Co., American house in Hong Kong,
shows that the affairs of that concern are in a
far worse condition than was generally supposed.
The liabilities are declared to be about $3,600,..

No less than $1,700,000 is owing to Chinese, and
it appears not improbable that when the affairs

than be above stated."

ENTF:RPRISINO YOL:NO M N. --The New -York
Commercial Advertzstr, one of the most respecta
ble Old Liue Whig papers in the country, thus
alludes to the nomination of Mr. Banks :
The indications are that the Republican Conven
tion will not accept Mr. Banks as their candidate,
though it must be clear to almost every one that Mr.
Banks has not only a more tangible political history,
but has done more for the party than Cot. Fremont.
The reports from Philadelphia indicate that the
"preference" of the North American Convention,
since they are not of the sort desired, and even Mr.
Banks himself, will be disregarded in order to make
a new trial of the stale policy of bringing forward a
candidate, who, having no political history, is not
liable to political criticism. Col. Fremont is, doubt
less, what a friend describes him to be—" a bright,
enterprising young man, and has explored the Rocky
Mountains handsomely. But he is positively with
out any antecedents as a statesman. His past career
gives no evidence of his opinions on any political
question." The idea that the people of the United
States will place such a gentleman, " bright enter
prising young man," though he be, in the Executive
chair of this great republic, is simply absurd.
