Sh,, t nri lreurr,r, r. - A lion of Mr. Thos. M'Cuy ,
of the Diamond Exchequer, was nceidentally Ldled
yesterday afternoon, by being run over by a horse
and earl en Short street, First Ward. It appears
that the lad was on his way to school, and the horse,
taking fright at a locomotive passing along Liberty
street, sheered off into Short street, where, notwith
standing the efforts of the driver to cheek him, the
horse ran against and knocked down the lad. The
right wheel of the cart passed over the right side of
the boy's head, crushing in his scull nod scattering
hip brains over the street- His body was picked up
by a gentleman in the vicinity, and carried to his
father's residence, in the Diamond. The Coroner
held an inquest upon the body, and a verdict of
death from accident was rendered.
The lad's name was Thomas H. M'Coy, and was
between seven and eight years old. He was a bright
intelligent boy, and his parents are almost distracted
at their bereavement.
Thrw,.—W o were never more suprised and
pleased than at the efforts of Mr. Joe. Delevan, who
gave an Inimitable imitation of Mr. C. W. Couldock
in his great performance of Luke Fielding on last
Tuesday evening. The manner, gesture, voice and
appearance were all forthcoming. Seldom have we
seen such a recognition given to any of the young
men in that peculiar line, as he was the recipient of.
We understand next week he will re-appear, and
give a more extended idea of his capabilities. En

n the prospectus for the publication, of a City
Directory, circulated to a considerable extent, signed
by the subscriber, as well as from. motives of it, and
of another by a citizen, to a much greater extant, it
is well known that that object, undoubtedly a very
important one to the citizens generally, was attempt_
simultaneously by two different individuals. Should
they persevere in the undertaking, it is certain that
both most inevitably lose by it.
JUNE 20
In commencing that operation the subscriber had
no intention of doing it in opposition to any other
individual ; the only intimation in regard to it being
by a letter received after the prospectus was printed
and the arrangements made—on the very day that
the agents left for the purpose of commencing their
operations—in which Mr. Thurston stated that ho
had that object in view, and naked for Information
from me, as a Directory Publisher, who had devo
ted years to it, as the best mode of accomplishing it.
That letter was answered by a statement that wo had
made arrangements for the same object—that the
true method of success was to keep a set of men
drilled for that object, which could only be done by
the same individual making it a business, and pub
lishing for different places, and that we had never
known of success by any individual who simply at
tempted the publication of a single directory, but
that if, after all, he should think proper to go for
ward, my canvassers would cheerfully infirm him
in regard to my method of collecting and compiling
information, dc. I did not suppose be would pro
ceed at all, yet I have not a word to say in opposi
tion to his doing so, and do not mean to stand in his
way. lie will succeed better from the notices which
have appeared of his as a rival to mine, which was
stated to be commenced by a transient individual,
knowing nothing of the city, in opposition to a well
known citizen.
As an individual we are not personally acquainted
with the citizens—as a directory publisher we are
pretty well known, and should not have feared our
inability to got up one to suit them—they evidently
prefer having it done by a citizen—the preference is
a natural one. I hope they will support him in the
undertaking, so he will be encouraged in sustaining
the work. He is probably as competent as any
other business man to publish a Directory for the
first time, yet., one year's experience in the business
will learn him more than all the information that
could be given him by the Directory publishers of
the whole world. Should he not after the first icons
conclude to continue the work, and should the citi
zens think it worth while to have one established by
one who, though not a citizen, has some experience
in the business we may, possibly, hereafter un
dertake to tarnish one similar in character to the
eineinnrtj Directory, which may be seen from year
to year in their principal hotels, &e.

PITTSBURGH, June 19th, 1856
As the summer advances commercial transactions
become more languid. and thus we aro admonished
that the business season is nearly at an end. The
Flour market has however been moderateki , active,
with increased stiffness and a tendency to advance
in prices, which will be still further accelerated by
the America's neve, which represents an advance in
the European markets for Breadirtuffs generally. We
also learn that heavy purchases of Wheat and other
grain have been made at Buffalo, and other Lake
cities, for exportation. In Bacon, also, our market
has exhibited a fair degree of activity, though with.
out any change in prices.
Our rivers have now receded to the lo* stage, and
none but boats of a smaller class are enabled to ply
our Western waters. Tb is will, of course, affect our
markets materially, as the Taconite must necessarily
fall off.
The news throughout the country is very favora
ble respecting the crops. The Philadelphia Ledger
has been gathering some interesting facts, front
which we learn that throughout the heavy grain
States of the North and East, the Wheat crop is uni•
ferrety represented as in a most promising condition.
Towards the Southwest, where the crop had more
nearly approached maturity, serious apprebentiohs
were beginelec to be felt, on account of thre ,ed
drought; bat the rains were becoming tor'
and in acme instances inflicting serious injury from
their abundance. In Virginia, the chinch bug is
doing some mischief. In South Carolina the Rice
and Corn crops are good. In North Carolina the
Wheat crop is not favorable. In Georgia Wheat
looks well. In Florida the yield of Breadstuffs will
largely exceed that of any former year. In Alabama
The Cotton crop is unfavorable. In Mississippi Cot.
ton and Corn are much better than last year. The
accounts respecting Louisiana are conflicting; some
papers speak of the cut worm as destroying both Cot
ton and Corn, but more frequently the Cotton Is de
scribed as very promising. In Texas the ravages of
the grasshopper are much complained. of. In Ohio
Grass and Wheat Lever stood better, and a great
breadth of Wheat Is sown throughout the State: the
Corn crop is in doubt. The Wheat crop in TIMMS
see is suffering from the ravages of the fly, but with
this exception, appears well. Michigan appears to
hare suffered from the severity of the winter more
than any ether State, the Wheat having been killed
wherever it was unprotected by the snow ; the inju
ry, however, Is not supposed to extend to more than
one-eighth the crop. In Indiana the *tope are very
promising, there being no injury in any quarter.
In Illinois the winter Wheat is reported as looking
remarkably well ; the farmer are uow putting in the
largest crop of Spriug Wheat ever seen in that State,
of Missouri, the St. Joseph tiorette amyl : " The
growing crop of Wheat is the most promising that
has ever been seen in the country." In New York,
while there Is much variation in the appearance of
the crops, some of the roots having been winter
killed, both grain and gnus promise a full overage
yield. The breadth of Barley sown is believed to
be quite large in proportion to other crops, on ar.
remit of the increased manufacture er malt liquor,
It is expected that Apples and Peaches will alec be
preduced abundantly. lu Pennsylvania, the gene
rat accounts are that there is a present preset,' of
large crops. The season is backward, hut that is
raid to be very favorable to the Wheat 'shod, was
...en in immense quantities last fall. The peach
crop is considered a tote! failure, hut Apples promise
abundance. The New Jersey crops are favorable.
to New Roglaud the season is hack weed, and any
opinion yet formed as to the fate of the Crop, IS din
his to mistake. tie the whole the prospects are re.
