WONDERFUL INSTANCE OF SAGACITY IN A DOG
SA VINO A Camp's Lire.—We take the following
f ro m the Trinity California Times. It certainly
records one of the most remarkable instances we
have ever heard of, of canine " sagacity." as it is
called, but which, in this instance seems more
like the exercise of the same reason with which
man is gifted, but the exclusive possession of
which he arrogates to himself.
Wm. Dredge lives about five miles from:tow%
at the base of the tnountdins which towerlortib,
of us. A short time after midnight on thd morn
ing of Wednesday last, ho was aroused from his
slumbers by the mournful howl of a dog. :No
menace on his part could rid him of the presence
of the strange intruder. The dog continued to
walk around the cabin, still repeating his dismal
moaning and howling, occasionally mateng ef
forts to effect, an entrance through the closed
doorway. Surprised and somewhat alarmed at
this singular demonstration, Mr. Dredge at last
hastily dressed himself and unbolted the door,
when a large mastiff rushed within. The dog at
once caught hold of his pants and employed every
gentle means to induce the gentleman to accom
pany him outside. Dredge's first impression
was that the animal was mad, and yet so peculiar
and earnest were the dumb entreaties, that he
finally yielded and proceeded without the cabin.
A joyful yell was the result, and the delighted
brute now capering and wagging his tail before
him, and now returning and gently seizing him
by the hand and pants, he induced. Dredge to
follow him.
Their course was up the precipitous sides of
the mountain, and soon they were forcing their
way through a snow drift that had settled in one
of its numerous abrasures. Here comes the
wonder. Upon the snow lay the body of a wo
man, who had evidently perished from cold and
exhaustion, Her limbs were already stiffened in
the embraces of death. But what was the sur
pri.e of Mr. Dredge to see that faithful dog fer
ret out from a bundle of clothing that lay by the
Side of the woman, a young child about two
' years of age, still warm and living. A little in
spection, aided by the pale starlight and the
brightness of the snow, enabled him to discover
that the person of the woman was nearly naked.
With a mother's affection she had stripped her
own person in order to furnish warmth to her
exposed infant. The trusty dog had completed
her work of self-sacrifice and immolation.
Mr. Dredge immediately conveyed the child to
his cabin, and arousing some of his neighbors,
proceeded again to the mountain to secure from
attack of wild beasts the person of the unfortu
nate woman. Her body was buried the next
day. The child and dog have been adopted by
this good Samaritan. But as yet he has been
unable to obtain any light as to the name of the
woman, or bow she happened to stray on the dis
mal mountain side at such au unfortunate hour.
The.child in doing well, end is truly a handsome
boy.

SNAKE IN A PRAYER MEETING —Last Friday,
at the usual weekly prayer meeting, held in the
bt-ement of the first Congregational Church a
strit,e , l snake made its appearance under cir
cumstrinee of a singular character. The meet
ing was held in a room where a door opens into
the basement of the towcr in which the town
clock is wound up. That door was left a little
and soon filter the [nesting had commenced
the snake made his appearance. Most singular
ly. indeed. our worthy Deacon had read the
chapter which gives an account of the Brazen
'4-lerpent made by Moses. lie had just commenced
making sonic remarks on the enapter, and was
speaking of the serpent being lifted up so that
all the bitten Israelites might see him and be
healed, when the serpent of which we are writing
made his appearance on the top of the dour open
ing into the basement uf the tower.
How he crawled up there no one can tell; but
Oleic- he was on the top of the door, his head and
about one-half of his body hanging over into the
room just in the rear of the Deacon's chair and
plainly to he seen by all in the room except the
speaker. The serpent on the dour at once be
' came the 'observed of all observers," the yottng
ladies present, in particular, watched every mo
tiou with the closest attention. As its body
! slowly writhed and twisted About, its 'forked
tongue and snaky eyes glistened in the light of
the prayer-room, with a malicious envy, we may
suppose akin to that with which the serpent in
old times gazed upon the happy toad pious wor
shippers in the garden of Eden. Unlike Eve,
her daughters have a mortal dread of snakes.
Once, too self relying, deceived, begwileff and
ruined by the wiles of a serpent, they have ever
since manifested, at his approach, an invincible
repugnance and horror. Deacan Morris, who
was speaking, soon discovered that something
was wrong, and the exercises were suspended
till a brother could get a broom and push the
snake off from the top of the door and dispose
of it. The meeting was then conducted as usual.
—Lreer Confily, Espoldiens.
Snoc~ nn 11.\111101ITY. — The Portland (Ore
gon) has a inle of horror. Some three
weeks ago teverai Indians were murdered at the
Cascades. The Indians murdered, consisted of
the family of Spencer, a chief who residas at
Vancouver, and was made up of his father an
old grey-headed Indian, his (Spencer's) wife,
and four children—a daughter nearly grown, and
three younger sons, one of which was a sucking
babe. The Indians had been up to Dallas, in
the service of the United States Government, and
were on their way hack to Vancouver, under
charged Col. Joseph Meek, and having regular
passes out their persons. In making the por
tage at the Cascades it seems that they were
overtaken by seven men (if such they might be
called,) and forcibly taken from Col. Meek,
whose life they threatened, and one after the
other teasmurdered by means of a strong cord,
which was tied around the neck and twisted with
a stick till life was extinct. The girl was violated
by these fiends before her life was taken.
THE FATIGUE AND FRACTURE Or METAL.-
Many accidents, the causes of which had been"
pronounced mysterious, may be ascribed to a pro
gressive deteriorating action, termed the "fa
tigue"of metals. Metal in a state of rest., al
though sustaining a heavy pressure, or strain, as
in a beam, or girder, and exhibiting only the
deflection due to the superposed weight, will
continue to bear that pressure, without fracture,
so long as its rest is not disturbed, and the same
strain is not too frequently repeated, but if either
of these cases occurs, a certain disturbance of
the particles takes place, the metal is deteriora
ted, and that portion subject to the reiterated
strain ultimately breaks down.

Tux KNOW NOT lIING PLATFORM-MIL FILL
MOP E. —A: , Mr. Fillmore, has, in his letter of
acceptance, placed himself fair and square upon
the Know Nothing Platform, and endorsed all
the proscriptive heresies and abominations of that
intolerant faction, we should like to know how
many Old line Whigs or Whig editors can sup •
port him? If they do, they must take him,
prin;iples and all, just on the platform where
to has placed himself, and, by so - doing, they
become Know Nothings themselves to all intents
and purposes. They cannot escape from this
position. •
A MISSING CALIFORNIA STEAMER. —lt has al
ready been mentioned that the steamship Golden
Age, with the mails and passengers from Pana
ma, had not arrived at San Francisco on the
'oth nit., at which time she was over due six
days. A San Francisco correspondent of the
Nei York Times mentions a rumor that on her
passage np the America saw a dense smoke off
her lee bow, but it was blowing too hard to ena
ble her to reach it. It was thought by many
that it was the Golden Age on are, but this, of
course, Ras merely conjecture. It was generally
believed she had been detained by some derange
ment of her machinery.
Till , . BRITISH NAVY.—it appears from an of
ficial document that on the Ist of April last
there were in the British Navy 271 steamers,
carrying '3,930 guns, and 913 sailing vessels, with
3,41 R guns, making a total of 367 vessels in all
carrying an aggregate of 7,354 guns. There are,
however in addition, 40 other steamers and ves
sels, used as tenders, storerhipe, tugs, &c. Of
the 271 steamers it appears that 207 carry less
than 11 guns--nearly all belonging to the gait
boats carrying four and six guns each,-
